Please help me with my 07 caliber. I have a code for the p0116 and p0335 crankshaft sensor; the problem is that the car has a long crank on a cold day so this is what I have to do to get it running pretty much all day First start it with long crank in a cold day(60'f or under), let it start and idle for 5 minutes at least If is really cold from (1 to 20'f) maybe 10 minutes so next cycle the key on pressing and releasing rapidly the accelerator key off , starts right up normal everytime for a whole day But the weird thing is that when it is like 80 or 85,90'f outside really hot day, the car will start right up no long crank at all please help

Quick pre'fuel injection story. Back in the early 80's I was making a delivery to the D/FW airport and driving a 1972 Datsun w/over 300,000 miles on it; original engine and had never been opened up befire. Our trucks always had oil changes every 3500 miles so they lasted forever. Anyway, Im on one of the side roads at the airport and the engine dies. I crank it over and it sounds like it wants to run but doesnt. I pop the hood, open the air filter housing, crank it over and the engine runs. I think great, put the air filter housing on, as soon as I clamp the air filter housing on, the engine dies. We tow it back to the shop. Take the cam cover off and the camshaft was snapped in half. I was impressed w/that little Datsun. When the air filter housing was off the 2 cylinders attached to the oil pump and timing chain drive were still firing. Put another cam in it and the truck never skipped a beat; ran till we sold it years later. Engines are always fun. Throw in fuel injection and an ECM and the fun just never stops. Really enjoy your vids. You and a few others are great teachers ;)

@@GoTechTraining The 1972 Datsun was suppose to be our light duty delivery truck for small packages but we regulary used it for 1000 lbs loads and on occasion oil well rig blocks @ 3100lbs; going to/from the heat treatment facilities. We bought it new in 1972 had overload springs in the rear and 8 ply tires on all 4 corners. The little truck def paid for itself multiple times over.

Great class Mike! That diagnosis was done in a few seconds of cranking and only equipment needed was my ears :D Now to find the cause would take a little longer but I wouldn't even charge a diagnostic fee unless they wanted me to find the root cause. Nice diag...Jumped time, bent valves, spit rockers and your right customer's repair choice .
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 5 лет назад
Hey Bob, thanks! Yep, that's what experience will do for you! I was under 30 min on initial diag to confirm my suspicion of mechanical failure. Odd cranking cadence led me to a relative compression test, funky relative compression results led me directly in-cylinder. The right equipment here saved a lot of potential teardown to confirm. Superb presentation, Mike! The way you explain and handle tools and cameras for two hours straight... is nothing short of magic. One subtle mishap with Picoscope cursors happened and went unnoticed at 1:01:06 : you grabbed a cursor, but it didn't "catch" and dropped into 180mA zone. So you grabbed another one. Thus your cursors window made it seem like you have 176mA current, when it should have been more like 20mA. Which, of course, only bolsters your point of that circuit being a low current one. The thing is this issue happens to me more often than I want to, I wish it was a little bit harder to lose a cursor while it is being dragged...

Sir, you are the only one I know who can help me out with this car problem. The car is a range rover 1998 p38 4.6HSE and v8. Many people were invited to start the car even from a far State but the couldn't. The challenge is a crank no start, no spark,no injector pulse but good communication with a scan tool. I have added fuel to the intake manifold and crank the engine no change at all. It is not starting. In addition, I checked for spark, but there is no spark as well. Hence, I have just checked for injector pulse but there's no injector pulse either. There is also no ignition current to the injector circuit with key ON and engine off. All the fuses and relays are good. I also checked the injector circuit for continuity if the wire is shorted but it was ok. Scan tool communicated and showed only p1843 and p1842 code. There was no RPM during cranking. What I noticed today when I compared the ignition, earth and DC with the same car that was starting and driving to the car that was not starting, what I saw made me to flabbergasted. Where the was ignition for example in the working car there was DC in the car that was not starting. Also a particular relay circuit for example RL-2 one of the pin of the connector when my test light was on battery ground and relay removed, the pump buzzed and testlight dim but when I tried that same location with test light and same pin the test light was dim and ABS relay was actuated no buzz from pump. It is like that in many places in the fuse box and PCM circuit. Please what's the cause of the problem and what do I need to do to fix the problem?

You should use your pico scope and do a relative compression test first. It takes a minute to do. Every driveability concern should start with a relative compression test imo. Another quick thing I will do is try to get it to fire on some brake clean or starting fluid. If you suspect broken timing chain/belt watch for valve action thru the oil fill cap ( not always possible). These 3 tests will take me less than 5 minutes.

Aaron, Relative compression is an AMAZING first step. The other 2 can be valid, but are dependent upon the vehicle. Either way. Quick tests that provide a ton of info are critical! Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor

Very intriguing video, But, wondering about your use of a scope attached around the fuse testing the fuel pump... Is really helpful to be able to test the fuel pump when it's in or on top of the fuel tank and is not immediately accessible... - Is a scope necessary, or is anything possible using an volt/ohm/ammeter? - Related to the above question about using a volt/ohm/ammeter, if possible and measuring amps, then I wonder if a clamp-on meter can be used. - Are you testing only for bad/good fuel pump, or some condition? Or, maybe even if for some condition, maybe it doesn't matter if it's some condition serious enough to warrant replacing? Thanks in advance.

If a late-model car won't start due to spark, it's usually a crank or cam sensor. If a car won't start due to fuel, it's usually a fuel pump relay or pump. Once in a while it's the wiring. Usually not the ECM or timing or compression.

Hey George, i'd be careful with assumptions like that. It could lead you very quickly down the wrong path. When I diagnose no starts I assume nothing until it's been tested and proven. Your mind can play tricks on you otherwise. ~Mike

I was called to another garage to fix a 2005 300c chrysler. The problems they noticed with the car was Hard or no start, red lightning bolt flashing, no throttle response, headlight stays on, battery and ESP light remaining ON during, most times immediate stalling after starting however, if it doesn't stall there's a rough idle throughout idling as a result a old PCM was replaced with a new one however problem still persisted. I scanned for DTC codes and saw a P0340, P2167, P2166, P2115, P2116, p0603 and more module codes like C2202, U0168, U1414, B1A25, etc. Please, how can I fix these problems? Can you also 🙏 provide me with the wiring diagram to CMP, CKP, APP factory values and how to test them? What should I be looking for in fixing the blinking red lightning bolt limp mode light, how can I reset the throttle without a scanner? 🙏 How do I fix that?

The engine oil appears to be super thin. Makes me wonder if the previous oil change included the improper viscosity of oil, which lowered the tensioner's ability to keep proper pressure on the chain. I don't foresee Honda specifying 0W-20 oil in an engine this old, if that's what was used.

Hello, Mike. What voltage is expected to see in a pcm controlled ground before and after the pcm provides the ground? Some type of bias voltage before and 12 v (Voltmeter on battery pos?)
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 5 лет назад
Hey Little7, it really depends on the circuit. Almost ALL PCM circuits use low reference, a few hundred milivolts at most, for the ground. The high voltage side of the square wave can really be anything. Some are 5, some , or 9, or 12. Depends on the car and the circuit. Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor

Actually injection occurs while the cylinder is coming up to evacuate the exhaust gases, the pulverised fuel is kept in the port until intake occurs.
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 5 лет назад
Depends on the engine and the injection method. Also depends on what VVT is doing to the intake valve. Fuel injection is a hard thing to rely on. Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
@op-tim_auto
@op-tim_auto 5 лет назад
@@GoTechTraining Honestly, a fuel pressure of aprox. 3.5-4.5bar (that's roughly the pressure in a PFI engine) is not enough if the injectors open when the intake valve opens. The valves would be shut before all the fuel enters the cylinder, so the fuel must be delivered in the port before intake valve opening. BTW, i've learned alot from your videos, especially fuel trims and for that i say: Thank You and a big appreciation!

Mike a quick question.I have a 1.8 vvt engine .one cam sensor and crank sensor and two solenoids for the vvt.I have a 2 channel pico and would like to get a known good cam and crank corralation.Would i be better off disconnecting the vvt solenoids to get a better waveform or should i leave them connected?Also if done with them disconnected would it harm anything.Would like to see a vid on testing vvt with basic tools and advanced tools.Thanks again for the great explanations.
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 5 лет назад
Great question...so when taking cam/crank correlation style captures it's always a good idea to verify the VVT does not operate at your testing range. Cranking/idle/whatever. The easiest way to do that is by unplugging them. Most cam phasers are pin locked to the cam and stay locked until oil pressure is applied, so no, chances are you won't damage anything. Some engines do change VVT at cranking or idle though so it may affect the way it starts/runs. I really want to do a video on VVT...just waiting on a car with a failure :) Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor

what I would like to hear explained is how does the transducer in one cylinder indicate a problem in all the cylinders.?
@abdul-kabiralegbe5660
@abdul-kabiralegbe5660 Год назад
I think the relative compression test was the actual test which exposed the system-wide problem, then the transducer took a sample of one cylinder. So without a visual inspection, one could conclude the issue was definitely across the 4 cylinders.

For a manual gearbox, drop it from the bottom or pull the gearbox and engine together, there is usually not enough space between the front of the engine and the chassis rail to get clearance for the flywheel/clutch and gearbox on transverse engines. With an auto you can generally get clearance to remove the engine alone through the top.
