It’s my belief that all people of all ages can learn, further and excel in technical dance.
I trained at the Royal Ballet School and worked professionally for 15 years and even though I have been teaching for 13 years I very much consider myself a student of dance and I’m really excited to show you all how thorough practice, perseverance and a little science, you can achieve a whole new level of technique & execution.
These tips are what have helped me and all of my students over the years achieve feats of technical excellence in mastering classical ballet technique.

That’s great news. The most important part to finishing a pirouette is to lengthen, breathe and try to maintain position for as long as possible. Dare yourself to hold it for a second longer 👍

i have about 10 things ruining my pirouettes. I am aware of most of them. also i'm scared of hurting my knee, ankle and foot when the floor is not slippery enough. It is so hard trying to fix all of these problems at once, but if i fis only one bad habit at a time, i still won't be turning. you're right i should probably go back to practicing balance in retiré.

Fantastic video. I’m not a ballerina at all, but I’ve always loved the movements, the music, and the athleticism. Your breaking down the components and specifics to practice at each key point was fantastic! Thank you.

I often find that working on one section at a time has an amazing impact on our technique. Try not to do too many things at once. I’m quite sure you’ll find consistency with these tips.

Hi to you all, firstly I am teaching live classes on Instagram on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 16:00 GMT, starting today where I will continue to work on pirouettes and allegro so if you’re not following me just search for HowlyBallet on the gram. Secondly my apologies for delay in more RU-vid content, due to the nature of this year it’s been incredibly difficult to work with my team, but I plan on lots more videos in the near future.

I'm practising my jazz turns and find it helpful to watch these videos for balance techniques etc and I've noticed that my foot is doing a little hop/shuffle in the middle of my turn and I don't know why... do you know why it could be doing this??
@howlyballet7744
@howlyballet7744 3 года назад
Two reasons this could be happening 1. Your off balance and having to Hop to stay on balance. 2. It’s become habit for you to hop on your supporting leg and you’ve lost confidence to stay on balance My advice would be to challenge yourself to avoid hopping by allowing yourself to safely fall off balance when practicing. This will tell you where your Weight is placed when turning. It takes a lot of commitment and trust but you’ll start to build more confidence and consistency by changing your mental approach to your work 👍
@johneconomou246
@johneconomou246 Год назад
I see that you prefer not to cross the retiré , something that prefered too, when I was young, finding easier to keep my thigh and knee open.Just , out of curiosity, what is your explanation of not crossing it?
@howlyballet7744
@howlyballet7744 Год назад
I trained at Royal when it followed Vaganova methodology so now I am programmed to love a high wide retiré. It’s a choice that I make work by focussing on hip flexor and glute development. Balanchine loved a crossed retiré so I think there’s definitely an argument for both to exist! 👍
@abigaillongworth5543
@abigaillongworth5543 3 года назад
Any tips on hopping in your pirouette I can do 2 turns if I’m lucky but I always hop or fall out. I try to think about pulling up but I think I just don’t have a natural sense of turn like I’m almost scared so I come out of the turn I don’t know 😅
@howlyballet7744
@howlyballet7744 3 года назад
Try to finish on balance, keep lifting higher when you feel yourself about to hop. Lift that retiré more towards the end.

This helped me so much, my turns are much better! My only question is, I've heard it A LOT but do you `lock` or hold your muscles tight and strong? All your muscles, in the shoulders, back, legs etc. So your body can support itself and keep posture during turns? I just want to verify it. And also, I am imagine you keep your posture as best as possible during turns? (Shoulders back, straight back, etc
@howlyballet7744
@howlyballet7744 4 года назад
Many thanks for your comment. Great question as well. Locking positions is a double-edged sword to be honest particularly in a pirouette. If by locking you then take on too much tension which stops spotting or weight adjustments during the turn then that’s not a good thing. But I do also agree that the traps, abs, pecs, delts, biceps & triceps need to feel super engaged and locked in. I often refer to pirouettes as tightrope walking, being strong and balanced with the ability to adjust.
@xxkbxx1713
@xxkbxx1713 4 года назад
@@howlyballet7744 That makes sense actually, but what about legs? They are what you're standing on
@howlyballet7744
@howlyballet7744 4 года назад
Pets andmore I like to establish position of the legs as quickly as possible, I often try to hit full position by the first quarter of the turn and then it’s simply a case of maintaining balance throughout how many pirouettes you can possibly achieve. Most unsuccessful pirouettes occur from too many moving parts and a lack of commitment to maintain position through to the very end. Every performer that I have trained have different specific needs and thoughts but for me if you begin with the correct preparation and mindset, then it’s a matter force from the ground to create acceleration.

Apologies for delay in response- posture is hugely important, but I believe that glute activation is the way forward to maintain turnout and balance for your pirouettes.

It’s like a huge chunk was missed out, so am now none the wiser of what to do with the arms as you ‘take off’. He jumped from the preparation t9 the ending with nothing in the middle. Please redo this video! I’m desperate as I have an exam in November xx
