Hey, Fabian! I saw your viral video titled (The perfect APS-C camera for bird photography? Canon EOS R7 (1-week Review) which has 14K views. I liked this video a lot, after that I watched a lot of your videos and I think your video is addictive.

Nice video I use both the R5 and R7 with the canon RF 100mm-500mm 1x4 converter it means I do not have to get to close and disturb the butterflies or insects and I have got some excellent shots

Thanks! I also like the RF 100-500 for occasional macro work! However especially in the early morning and when working with smaller butterflies I still prefer my 150 macro

Gruezi Fabian Interested in the focus stacking for future show. Maybe show photoshop since we all have it plus one specialised software to show differences Bob

Have you tried wide angle macro of the many butterflies? I normally use my tele, because I mostly can't get close without them escaping 😬 probably because I can't get up before sunsets in summer 😅

Yes, I did. But probably not seriously enough, at least I‘m not so happy with the results so far 🙈😅

Nice video. Interestingly, you do not need a macro lens for this. Many telephoto lenses give a good enough macro ratio for butterflies and give a better working distance than macro lenses. A bigger working distance means that you are less likely to disturb your subject. I use either a Canon EFS 55-250 or a Canon EF 100-400 MKii both of which focus to under 1 metre.

Thanks! For larger butterflies and dragonflies I agree, but for these small ones I still prefer my sigma 150 makro over my RF 100-500

Background will be very different though and you loose alot of depth. Thats why a single lens cant do everything. Also the close working distance is great for very small subjects. Pros and cons.

In fact I did take a couple of shots with my 70-200mm, but the only thing I esteem rather essential for my butterfly photos is my 100mm stabilized macro lens. When attached to an APS-C body it turns into a 160mm lens (Canon) and provides me with that little extra distance and a bit more depth of field, on the full format body the backdrops become a little bit more creamy, so I make fresh decisions which camera to employ every now and then. Or rather the butterfly decides...

This sounds to me like the most complicated way of shooting butterflies, and the results often look quite generic - that's why I never use a tripod when it comes to butterflies, I use a stabilized 100m Macro instead, and I know it's rather difficult to achieve, but when my photo tells a little bit of the natural surrounding of the animal AND is aesthetically pleasing, than I'm really happy with my efforts. I want to tell stories, not just create decorative two-dimensional objects. And by the way this works any time of the day, even with a little wind. Everyone to her or his likings, I only want to emphasize that the style of butterfly photography you are demonstrating here is not without productive and maybe more authentic alternatives.

Thanks for your comments! I think your last sentence is very important, in the end every photographer needs to like his/her results 😊
