LOL... my first thought was: "That's all?" 🙂 I shot 1300 for two games (junior high and varsity) of 8-man football this past Friday, with just over 1000 for varsity. I know my bad habit is not following the players after the play and not shooting all the way through a sequence so I am definitely missing some shots.

Thanks for another amazing look behind the scenes. I appreciate the move toward trying to simulate the experience of a single shooter - since that’s my frame of reference. I’m still trying to figure out how to make the workflow faster but retain high quality in a scenario where the lighting is often changing between angles, I’m not always able to get the best position around the field/court, and the lighting is so much worse for high schools than for college/pro venues. It looks like it takes longer for me to run de-noise on an image than it does for you to do a full edit! Thanks for showing us what the top level looks like. The organizational tips were gold - unique file names and folder name change.

A quick note, when getting your photos into photomechanic in sync when using multiple cameras make sure the time and date in the cameras match up to each other, especially when you have traveled into a different time zone and want the camera data to record the images in local time. It would also be interesting to hear about how your approach changes during inclement weather. Over the years I'm sure you have had to shoot making games in a rain storm and a probably a few in a snow storm. One thing that you didn't really cover is in regards to injured players, some times an injured player can become a major development in a game, if you capture an injury during the live action what is your protocol, also with doctors and trainers attending to an injured player One last thing, I am not sure how you balance this out, toward the end of the game you went into the team bench area to get some shots. If a game has a lopsided score how do you balance those bench shots with getting shots of second or third team players in action. Those players may play in only a few games a year and that may be the only time you can get them in game action.Don't forget a scoreboard shot at the end of the game especially in a closely contested game or an upset.
@byuphoto
@byuphoto 9 месяцев назад
1. weather often becomes part of the story, so if it starts raining/snowing I try to get detail shots of weather, overalls, play with fan perspective. 2. I usually take photos of docs and trainers working on players, walking them off the field, they always appreciate the photos at the end of the season. Gotta take care of the guys who will take care of you when the running back slams into you on the sidelines. 3. end of game is always a balance, at home I'll spend more time in bench area because I have other shooters watching the action, on road I'll prioritize 3rd stringers action more, unless it is a big win with lots of emotion.

These videos are remarkably well done and truly a service to anyone who shoots sports. Jaren -- I'm assuming that you eventually code replace your player names into the meta, yes?
@byuphoto
@byuphoto 10 месяцев назад
Actually we don't add the names in with code replacement. Our graphic designers go through the photos and separate them into folders for each athlete, and then misc groupings like celebrations, crowd, etc. We are working on using AI to do the metadata tagging.

@byuphoto

I try to keep my long lenses with me most of the time, depending on the stadium, the sidelines are pretty safe, but the risk of someone running into it or stepping on it is always high. Sometimes when I need to shoot an overall I'll set the lens down on the ground against the wall, but not often.

Where do you position yourself to shoot DBs and safeties? I'm thinking closer to the line of scrimmage since further down the field or opposite goal line might have too many obstructions. Don't know if it's something you want to discuss but how about tips and suggestions for workouts, stretches, and physical postures for not hurting yourself or straining things like knees and shoulders from shooting during a game (I've had to ice my patella tendon on my left leg twice a day since Friday night)? I figure it's more a matter of being a non-exercising cube-dweller and that walking the sidelines on Friday night is the most workout I have gotten of late but the knee pain stopped me from getting down/into a crouch so I ended up shooting standing up (I'm 6'5") which is less than ideal for football in general and high school in particular.

Is there a trick or an easy way to synchronize the clocks on your cameras so that when you merge shots from multiple cameras afterward they are in the proper time sequence? I find that it's easy for the clocks my R6 and 5D3 to drift apart by several seconds/week so I end up with the run-back from an interception showing up BEFORE the interception because I shot them with different cameras. (Or is that something that can be addressed by Photo Mechanic on import... like "Subract 54 seconds from all selected photos"?)
@byuphoto
