Love this! My son slept through his entire newborn shoot. He probably opened his eyes once. He peed and pooped too. It takes a lot of patience. Now I have 2 toddlers and it's SO hard! Going to try these tips.

Yeah, what Xarthor said. In a couple of our recent videos we discuss widllife a portrait gear with Nikon folks, and while there are a few important differences it doesn't make much of a difference at all.

She was still, but you're right that if she had been running, a faster shutter would have been required. I wouldn't hesitate to photograph her at 1/30th in those conditions (assuming image stabilization).

Heya, Barry. It's more art than science, and it depends on how closely aligned the subjects' faces are to each other, how much of a tilt the head has, how far away you are, and as you mention, the sensor size. You get a feel for it, take a test shot, and then zoom in to make sure all the eyes are reasonably sharp (though often they won't be perfect). Check the Group Photos section in Chapter 6 of Stunning Digital Photography (links in the description) for more info.

Once again a great video with loads of useful info. Great to see a shoot and how this can be done with nothing but reflectors and ambient light. Also to see how something so ordinary like smalltalk a bit of clowning can break the tension and loosen up the subject. Thx!

Hi Tony & Chelsea. You, along with Samantha, treated us to another great lesson on outdoor portraits. Can you explain why Samantha opted to use a ND filter and a slow shutter speed, rather than just letting her shutter go to 1/500 or faster? I also wondered why she used a 50mm lens instead of a longer one which would be typical for portraits. Thanks! Another CT boy.

We wouldn't have invited Samantha on if we weren't fully confident in her skills. She's very talented. One thing to consider is that during a normal shoot, you have a lot of time to reposition your model and play with lighting. WHen you're taking pictures during a video there's a lot of pressure to get your photo fast while trying to be instructional. It's very hard!
