Have you ever tried to photograph the night sky? Was it successful? If you visit the Pangolin Chobe Hotel in Botswana over a new moon and when the conditions are right we can take you to a favourite Baobab tree nearby to practice. See this video for more details on the hotel. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TeJ0wqJakcM.html

Great video covers the very basics and then some! Some Tips I have found are to put some chemical hand warmers on your lens to reduce the lens fogging up over the night , the more megapixels your camera has the more the stars will begin to trial and if your stars look bloated when setting up fccus ( take some test shots) is an example that your focus is slightly still off even if you have set infinity focus! All so make sure your lens is spotlessly clean a dirty lens will cause your stars to bloat big time even if you have perfect focus! I would recommend a stack of 6 images as a minimum and twenty images will bring best results when doing stacking!

Amazing video! Thank you very much! One question to Charl: does PhotoPills need a connection/network to display the image of Milky Way? I see you don't have service on your phone (but do I see WiFi???) Theoretically the App needs only your GPS position. I used TPE and it would not work without network because it shows terrain. I always needed to prepare locations before my trip :-( but if PhotoPills doesn't need a network and can display the skies then it is a difeferent story!

Forgive my ignorance and laziness for not researching but is this landscape always more or less this dry and salty looking or is there a flood season when Kubu truly is an island? Excellent video, well filmed, edited, and instructive. Thanks!

Kubu island is in fact surrounded by the salt pans of The Makgadikgadi which do occasionally fill with water. It is an ancient land and truly beautiful.

Fantastic images! Congratulations! But just one remark: Since many years I have taken lots of pics from the nocturnal sky. I agree with most of the camera settings, Janine teached us, but 25 sec or 20 sec exposure time is too much in my opinion. All the stars become a little bit oval. My experience is, to use 15 sec max, better is 12 or 13 sec. The reasons are the rotation of the earth itself (speed depends on lattitude too) and the circulation of the planet around the sun (which is more important here). Hope you agree.
@PangolinWildlife
@PangolinWildlife 4 года назад
Hi Christoph. I certainly think that the position where you take the shot will have an effect and also the maybe the camera you are using. Certainly, very valid points that you are making.
@ElenaHanak
@ElenaHanak 4 года назад
Yes, Christoph, that is exactly settings I use in Botswana or Zimbabwe: 13sec. In Europe (48 degree North where I live) we can shoot with 20sec but for 19-20 S seems to less for me even when I use 14mm on full frame. With 10mm it will work maybe. On timelapse it will work, too becasue you don't zoom in and in movie we cannot register that small circles are small ovals ;-)
