We show you how we pick pears with our Hoss Tool Bucket and with a DIY tool that Danny shows you how to make. Then we show you how we store them until they are ready to put up. And how we peel, cut up and can those pears.

I found an abandoned pear tree this week. I was only able to harvest a couple of dozen. This tree is old and around 30ft tall, it's loaded in pears. Super excited about your long pole picker! Gonna make one and go back to help that tree lose some more weight. Thank you for posting this video!

Lovely job "all the way through"! Beautiful and bountiful. Growing and canning your harvest is a lot of work however the harvest is well worth all that needs to be done. You know exactly what is in your jar, how it was prepared and oh how tasty! Your pears are just beautiful. Thank you as always for sharing your process. It's always a fine journey watching you. I appreciate all that you do as do your viewers. Both you Danny and Wanda make great teachers and those who are trying to learn and haven't had experiences will be able to learn from you as leaders. Many parents never did these survival skills and many, even older people are working on a learning curve. So what you do is so important even for us who lived and walked the walk. However, you both are so knowledgeable you share things even I am not aware of. The ripening of pears for example is just one of those new methods I wasn't aware of as I never had a pear tree. Making things out of what you have is also a real skill. Having been an art teacher for 40 years with barely any funding is a skill that no one teaches but is acquired. Teaching with a set of skills that demands that you learn how to write, find materials, go to the community, even support the community by teaching your students to work together to become philanthropist for the community is just another way to turn the whole system around and make it work. Finding corporations, companies, foundations, even recycled materials throughout your school community is an awesome experience. If you don't have help create programs teaching children how and what they need to do in order to make "things work"! This is why I wanted to share how I understand what you do is so important for our generations of learners and providers for our families out there. Hard work is the essence of our society and I want you both to know how teaching skills to those who want to learn and make a better life for themselves and their families is so important for the growth of our society. Best wishes and continued success.

This video comes at a perfect time for me. We just bought and moved into our dream farm (YAY! I am so thankful and excited) and on the farm is two pear trees and I was looking at them yesterday thinking how we will know when the pears are ripe. I picked one and although it tasted good it was so hard. I was thinking that maybe if I picked them and let them sit for a bit they might soften up...and now after seeing your video, I know what I need to do!! I've canned pears and pear jam (from farmer's market) for years but never harvested them myself so the information you have in this video is very helpful!!

This was the perfect time for me to see this video!! I watched it for the first time last night, and it was all I could do to not go outside and lift up on some pears to see if they are ready!! We usually don't start collecting pears til September here in Arkansas. I have 2 trees that are LOADED. One of the trees fell several years ago, but it didnt die, and it produces the biggest pears!! Probably because the chickens like to gather under there and keep it fertilized! :)

+Deep South Homestead wow!! I'm going to try dehydrating some, but that takes SOOOO LONG!! Canning is quicker. Have you tried fermenting pears? One of my favorite ways to use still firm (just slightly underripe) Bosc or Anjou pears from the grocer is as poached pears (great with [usually vanilla or butter pecan] ice cream as a topping on angel food cake and similar). Given that so many of the fireblight "resistant" varieties are "Oriental" (hybrids of European and Asian, usually the Chinese white/sand pear) and have inherited the Chinese pear's hard texture and lack of flavor, this seems like a useful technique for southern pears. I usually use black currant juice or syrup (lot of Polish immigration in my area, so this fruit wasn't entirely forgotten during the war against White Pine Blister Rust as in most of the USA); I believe sweetened wine or a ginger + vanilla syrup are traditional, and I saw one French-style cooking show where the guy used stale coffee (& sugar). Poaching is low and slow to encourage the (peeled & cored but usually not sliced, because the ~candied whole fruit is considered aesthetically pleasing) pears to absorb the flavor of the syrup, but since canned food soaks in the syrup until the can is opened, I think it might be worth trying to slice the pears slightly thinner and actually can in a flavored syrup. Thoughts?

At first I was thinking you shouldn't refrigerate pears BUT when you said a new method and only a couple of days that suddenly made sense. I'm in apple country. We always say wait to pick until after the first LIGHT frost for the apples to have the best flavor. Unfortunately, for the general public the major growers have the fields picked long before the apples are anywhere near ripe.

Hi Danny. I bought 1 Keiffer pear tree to plant in my small back yard. (1) Do I need to buy a 2nd tree in order to get make the pear tree produce fruit? Thxs. (2) When I get ready to put it in the ground, what soil mix do I use, and what type of fertilizer should I use?

Wanda my mom taught me to make a cinnamon spiced pears by adding a few red hots in each jar while canning. Have you tried that? It's awesome tasting and gives them a pretty pink color

I haven't been able to buy a pear that will ripen without rotting for the last 3 years. Their hard when we get them. So we try to wait them out ,but they are hard one day and rotten the next. I had some rock solid ones this morning and i gave up. Mixed them with apples to make sause and canned them. I love pears but What good is it if they spoil.

Nice example of 'Where There's a Will There's a Way'. I would love to know what varieties of pears you are growing.

We are expecting our 1st freeze Tuesday. Should I pick the years and peaches and allow to ripen indoors. Don't know how hard the freeze will be. Tarpping the tomatoes as they are just now starting to ripen

I guess you didn't get the big storm they where talking about? Did you get the corn done or is it still drying in the field? Oh and the pears look real good. Hope you guys have a good day.

No just lite rain that was much needed. We did get some of it in, but didn't have room to bring it all in. So some is still in the field. Thanks

Thank You Wanda /Danny you get the bad rains and wind they were calling for?
@DeepSouthHomestead

No, just lite rain. Pretty nice for the plants around here. They always blow these storms out of proportion. But we prepare just in case a "Katrina" comes again. Thanks

Have you ever considered using the pear scraps to make cider or vinegar?

We have made pear juice that we used to baste ribs with. We have made jelly with the peelings, but we have lots of jelly right now. Awesome stuff. Thanks
