Maybe you put too much effort into finding the perfect one, so when you "gave up" with the screening process, your subconcious did that job for you and picked what seemed as the best option. Might have been random in your knowledge but instinctively chose the good ones.

My mom was a thumper, but I never quite got it. My brother told me about the creamy yellow spot (where it sat until picked), and I have had 90% success with that alone. I saw a video last year and added one trick: look for tiny brown crystals formed on the blossom end. The more there are, the sweeter. I get my best workout at the grocery store picking up watermelon and turning them over. Even the occasional dud is salvageable chop them up and either freeze, then toss in a blender or (if you have one) put the small chunks and juice into your electric ice cream freezer. Even a less than ideal or an I-bought-too-much-fruit-to-eat-this-week watermelon is delicious when dehydrated. (The texture is a bit strange, but it’s amazing how much flavor is in even a slightly mushy pale melon!)

I've learned to go with the one that has a bright yellow spot. Creamy pale yellow isn't quite sweet enough.

@southpawdiecast8352 3 года назад
I agree to a point I been using this method for several years,one thing that needs to be corrected is on the yellow spot where it's been on the ground,I've always gone by it needs to be a dark yellow not a creamy lighter yellow,a darker yellow means it's been picked and less time off the vine,a lighter yellow means it's been off the vine longer and can be bat as sweet but everything we owe is spot on and we always pick great watermelon every year.

Yes, seeded watermelons tend to be sweeter but people are lazy and don't want to deal with seeds and that's how we have seedless watermelons with no flavor. Sucks because seeded watermelons are now hard to find i'm guessing because the farmers know there is a bigger market for seedless.

I want to note that the most common kind of watermelon in my country (Egypt) is mainly a very dark green with little to no stripes and is still very sweet (and a lot redder than the one in the video) when you pick the right one so I wouldn't say the stripes are a thing for me but they might be for the type of watermelon in the video... the way I personally pick watermelon is to ask a trustworthy vendor at the market to pick one for me, even if they don't know you, they'd typically pick you a good one (which they surely can) to build your trust so you'd go back and buy more

My Advice in how to pick certain fruits and veggies: look for the crispy skin ones, but not too thin skin, also not too thick skin, avoid the ones that are limp and 'soggy' like soggy apples. Those are overripe and with water only cuz the old age of the melon forced it to use up all the sugar to stay alive longer from aging. Leaving a very bland taste with very little flavor taste even if the smelled aroma is rich. And yes farmer's market gives a good chance to find more naturally grown foods that tastes better and are of better food quality. When tapping/patting watermelons, never go for the deep/low tone sounding ones, go for a slightly higher pitch/tone or in the middle. If it sounds like the G string of a violin or a bass tone in music, avoid it. Too ripe and watery and no sugar. You'll notice the melons that are literally just dark green all over may be heavier due to having too much water. at some point you will be able to tell apart the young and crispy and the old ones, and will be able to tell freshness of fruits and vegetables if you shop enough and actually pay attention. For corn, look for dull color, solid yellow means its too old, make sure the light gleams off of it so the skin should be shiny in general look for fruit or veggies that have a 'shine' reflected on their skin, showing freshness and good health of skin and no loss of color or skin health. This is applied to eggplants as well. Never buy eggplants that are too soft either, same goes for cucumbers. Always go for firmness of food which indicates their health/freshness For asparagus, dont go for ones with white on the tips. Never go for thick asparagus. Always go for the thinner ones, they are more tender and fresh like young bamboo shoots. For carrots, if you like sweet and slightly juicy and flavorful DELICIOUS carrots, baby carrots are never a good choice, and avoid carrots that are too big, go for medium sized long carrots. For apples, try to go for farm/rough skinned apples, waxed skin apples don't taste as good Cauliflower and Broccoli: avoid both kinds if they have black on them even the slightest if you want most fresh. You can look between/inside the head of the brocolli to see how far the green has developed. Always go for deep grey/blue green top/head area for brocolli, never light green because its closer to yellow and its not ripe enough. A lot of how I pick fresh produce is from the wisdom from mainly the women in my family, my mom and gran, and borrowed 'some' from dad and gramps as cross-reference to find see both left/right extremes on the balance scale or peripheral vision, and narrow it down to the perfect middle. Picking the right eggs that are organic or from pasture raised chickens also makes a big difference. There are eggs that have a slight 'greenish' layer on the outside of its yolk if you boil them. Organic eggs that come from cage free/pasture raised chickens have yolks that have less or lack the green layer, and usually has slightly or much richer yellow yolk you see when you boil it.
@nadogrl

No time to read it all right now, but the green around the hard boiled egg yoke is from overcooking it.

I’m in produce at a grocery store. Slapping the water melon is the best way. The higher the pitch the more firm the water melon is, and the less ripe it is. As watermelons ripen they become less firm inside which produces a lower thump sound. It needs to sound almost like your belly when you thump it or like a drum. When the thump sound is flat and lifeless it means the water content is low and its mushy/grainy inside. Also check firmness. You can still get great water melons that are firm. I actually tell people not to get the ones you can push the rind in. The more you can push the rind in the more chances it can be mushy inside. Yes they can still be sweet and taste fine, but you are risking getting one that has a bad aftertaste.

Steps to pick the best watermelon: 1 - make sure there is a strong and consistent stripe pattern with dark green and pale creamy yellow. 2 - look for the pale creamy yellow spot on the watermelon, this should be large and the bigger the better. Make sure it’s a creamy pale yellow. 3 - look for a yellow brown stem, if the stem is green, it was not ripened on the vine and will not be as sweet. 4 - knock on the watermelon, you want a deep hollow sound. Emphasis on HOLLOW! 5 - look for “dry weathering spots” on the melon, this means it will be extra sweet 6 - when you lift the melon, it should feel much heavier than it looks. 7 - the outside should have a little bit of give to the melon, if it is too tough, it won’t taste as good. 8 - rounder melons taste sweeter.

In good ol' Alabam (that's Southern for Alabama), we learned that a watermelon can have one of three distinct sounds when tapped: stomach, chest, and head. A stomach sound means overripe or thickened rind; head means under-ripe; chest means just right!
@adelaideleung6261
@adelaideleung6261 4 года назад
Interesting analogy! I like that better than when people say a "hollow" sound, cause to me, when I hear the word "hollow", I think "empty." This guy is nuts! Shape is indicative of variety as is color and pattern! The 3 points he makes that are correct: large yellow spot, stem that is brown & brown track-like lines( you won’t always find the track lines). Not all watermelons have lines(the stripe pattern), are round or are seedless. The best watermelons have seeds which are labeled SEEDED. If you visit farmers markets you may find some great varieties which have rinds which are solid green, very dark green-nearly black, dark green lines with a pale background, green netted with light green background, etc. You might also find flesh which is yellow, orange or pink. There are watermelons which can weigh upwards of 60 lbs so size is not an indication of sweetness either. These less usual varieties are some of my favorites. Road side stands may also have the less usual varieties also!

The real trick to watermelon choosing 1) yes it needs to be round but it has to be bulging out 2) bulging out is not guarantee it's the sweetest, find thin skin layer and make sure its young, not thick 3) never . ever. go for the ones that are too low tone/pitch when you flick/tap/slap the melon skin. Avoid the ones that are 'too' heavy 4) if you aren't sure if its too ripe but its too big and heavy, you need to feel and weight it in your hands. The skin needs to be dry as mentioned around 1:30 of the vid 5) stripes is a must and yes, the yellow helps, but that's not guaranteed, every damn melon in the box has stripes and a bit of yellow, you have to use the steps above to pick the right one, not by color, just avoid the all dark green ones unless they're all dark green or you're in china. They're ALWAYS sweet because they never been tampered with in their breeding and raising, at least not as much as in the west 6) You need to feel and/or detect the 'freshness' of the melon and this comes with trial and error. I found my 'happy medium' in melon age and my accuracy is 80-90%. 4 out of 5 melons I choose are always better than the ones my other family members choose, and are sweeter 7) the color of the melon: Yes, deep red is good, but that means nothing. Because melons may have deep aroma you can smell but the taste is bland because all the sugar is gone or its underdeveloped and RIPPED OUT OF THE GROUND TOO EARLY LIKE SO MANY OTHER PRODUCE IN GROCERY This is how you know foods we eat are GMO. They are given growth hormones and picked too early so they can age after they're picked and shipped to groceries across the country. Bananas are great examples of this. In the 90s, I never seen bananas ripen and blacken/brown so damn fast, it took at least 3-5 days before an already solid banana would go brown so fast, in fact the browning rate was much slower. Here is another blessing aside from my list of advice/tips on how to choose for various fruits/veggies in another comment, here's another good tip for you 1) ALWAYS BUY BANANAS FROM THE BRAND CALLED DOLE 2) support festival foods the grocery store because the staff treats you well and the place is organized extremely well and the food are extremely fresh. 3) if you like fried chicken buy festival foods' roasted chicken, the skin is crispy. Stop eating the massive layer of breading from KFC that you dont need to eat and is unhealthy for you.

copy pasting what i wrote on another comment look for the crispy skin ones, but not too thin skin, also not too thick skin, avoid the ones that are limp and 'soggy' like soggy apples.

Just look for the small brown spots on the watermelon. Sometimes they're in a straight line. Other times the spots are random. They're created by the bees searching for the sweet nectar and usually indicate this melon is sweet.

@JonasRosenven

You can be 100% sure that the marks are not made by bees gnawing at or stinging the melon. Bees die after they use their stinger. They don't eat watermelons either. They eat pollen and nectar from flowers.

I love how big of a commitment chosing a watermelon is because if you make a bad decision, you have to suffer for the next several days as it is consumed slowly and painfully rather than a small fruit, closer to a serving. Also, I have chosen watermelons for several strangers and can pick a decent one with about 75% accuracy. I'm definitely not an expert but I can say that sound is key when choosing. Upon slapping the melon rather than knocking on it, a more harmonic/ ringing sound is preffered over a flat/ damp sound.

Once a watermelon is damaged, all the damaged areas become bad and caused the rest of the watermelon to go bad very soon Threw both of them away and look at me came back here right away to share it with y’all lol.
