How I Pick Out the Perfect Watermelon Everytime 

I love watermelon, but it never occurred to me finding its filet mignon.

This is the best video I've found detailing well how to pick a watermelon. The only aspect Josh misses is in most other people's videos- select a watermelon that has a brown stem, not a green stem. A green stem (it is said) indicates a melon that was picked before vine ripening in the field. Great job Josh in TX.

My girl came home a week ago with a melon that i genuinely cant believe she managed to pick. It was nearly 80% pith. A tip in relation to the webbing, i cant guarantee the pollination factor but if there are small black orbs on the webbing that is a good indication that there is lots of sugar

I do the same test but sometimes you have to remember how long it spent in the heat before arriving in doors, if the Waremelons are stored outside don't buy. Unless under stade.

i saw from an italian fruitseller on tiktok that a sweet watermelon has a very small "asshole" (no idea what the actual english term is) and the stem should be as dry as possible, also you should be able to easily scratch the green outer skin with your nails. He also mentioned the sunspot and webbing methods

I've figured out a different method to ensure I never leave the grocery story with an imperfect watermelon in my cart. To do it, I walk right past the watermelons and leave them where they are.

Shiny watermelons tend to be under ripe. Watermelon is by favorite breakfast in the summer. I go through about 1 melon a week because I cut it into seedless chunks and store it in my fridge. A bowl of crisp, sweet, juicy watermelon cubes is the best way to wake up.

Some cultivars consistently produce sweeter fruits such as black diamond or sugar baby.

So another source I found says that webbing indicates a melon that's seeping sugar, which means a sweeter melon. The webbing is where the sugar seeped out while the melon was growing.

The slap test has been the tried and the true form of finding watermelon for me. It hasnt failed me yet. I find the knock test to be too forceful when listening and in the end makes it harder to hear the difference. A well spread out and consistent slap travels thru more sq in of the watermelon then a knock ever can and verbate thru it much more evenly and in result will dampen a lot more if there is a squishy interior, making the process a bit easier to find bad watermelon. Its also a bit naughty. I do agree with the weight test though, a heavy watermelon will outweight any other factor. Sometimes these may not be as crisp as a perfect watermelon, but will always be very sweet so you decide if the trade off is worth it. I only use those two factors, I find visual inspection to fall flat more often than not, tho it is something to be mindful of regardless.

To remove the seeds I personally recommend to use a fork.

Love watermelon... sadly I am also mildly allergic to it and it makes my mouth itch and swell up :( Might be worth it for this center cut. I'll keep these tips in mind for the family as they all love watermelon and I'm the one that buys them watermelons.

For me, the weight is the highest priority. Type is just crazy talk. Seeded or seedless, I'm going with the one that is the heaviest. The webbing I avoid, I didn't like how it feels. And the ground spot... Doesn't matter as much as people make you think it does. And finally the sound.... The sound doesn't help. I've had great sounding watermelons that were mealy inside. You know that grainy texture like sand. I only trust the weight.
