Hi @Steph Anya, I just found your channel. Thank you for providing resources, questions, and value. My question, I got accepted to a Psychology graduate program in California. However, I'm now considering studying abroad either in Canada or Europe. After graduating, I'd like to reside in Europe. What's your suggestion how to find an accredited school? Who do I need to speak with? Questions I need to ask to gain more clarity on my goals and plans. I'm in the beginning phase of my journey to graduate school. I appreciate your insight and feedback. hey steph! I was wondering (and you may not know the answer, but a response would be super helpful!) how much does school name matter for this field? Should I worry too much about where I get the degree from as long as they’re COAMFTE accredited?

Hi Steph, super helpful video! I was recently accepted into the M.S. in MFT program at USC (not COAMFTE accredited) and the M.A. in MFT program at USD (COAMFTE accredited). I’m really conflicted on which program to attend. Any thoughts/insights about these programs would be greatly appreciated!

I’m stuck between marriage and family therapy and school counseling. I want to start applying for a graduate program next fall, but for school counseling I have to teach for two years and I’ve been teaching only for half of a year. Anywho, thanks for posting this!

@@StephAnya honestly the pay and benefits. Lol I’m in my mid-late thirties and I’m honestly making my decision based on my family’s needs. School counseling could be cool because of the hours, holidays and summers off. However, I’ve always wanted to be a therapist. I’ve even thought of getting masters in both. Based on your experience, what do you think about getting licensed as a counselor and a therapist?

From what I understand, the pay between the two is very similar! However, as a therapist you have the option to start your own practice.

I am in the same boat as you and I chose MFT. Was considering counseling but they aren't always focused on students rather testing in my experience. I wanted to focus on the core of it all and that is why I am choosing to become a therapist! 36 y/o mom of 1 toddler and future baby in the works! Last time I got Master's I was pregnant with my son and now we are working on the second child, will probably happen once school starts like it did the last time! Lol Good luck with whatever you choose!!

Not sure where you are on this journey. But after graduating you can get certified as a school counselor through a graduate program that offers it. Some states you can get certified as a school counselor with an MFT without taking additional classes. This opens up your options instead of just being boxed in as a school counselor as those jobs are not as plentiful either.

Just discovered your channel and I am SO glad I did! I recently decided I want to go to school for MFT, and am currently in the process of trying to figure out where to apply to! I was wondering if there’s anything I can do in the meantime to help with experience? Or just research or books that would be helpful to know going into a program? I would love to be proactive with my time :) thank you!

If you want a head start, you can rent a textbook which is what I did before beginning my program. Mastering Competencies by Diane Gehart is a good one!

@@StephAnya Thank you so much! I will definitely check it out. On another note, you’ve really sold me on NCU! I know in one of your videos you mentioned that you were interested in specializing in sex therapy but ultimately decided against it. Looking back, do you regret not having a specialized in it during the program? I feel pretty torn. I’m very interested in the sex therapy specialization but at the same time, having flexibility in choosing which electives to take, as you did, sounds great. Also just wanted to say how invaluable your channel is! I’ve had a hard time finding resources in this area and your channel has been a saving grace. THANK YOU! :)

I really wanna go to Cal Lu but now with all these tiny requirements and all these CACREP and COAMFT stuff it’s making me really stressed out. Cal Lu has 2 different campus and has one site clinical offices. It’s a great option and is a little expensive but it’s good for me. I want to get my masters and move states to get my license in Colorado I saw the internship requirements and I know what they need to get license but these other tiny factors are freaking me out.

Hi! This was really helpful, but I have a question. So, I aspire to become an MFT. I’m currently in undergrad (major: Human Learning and Development) and I plan to finish within the next 2-3 years. After that, I want to attend grad school. I’m in Georgia. After undergrad, I have two options: PhD from UGA or Master’s from VSU .. Ik a lot of MFTs have a Master’s .. what would a PhD do for me that a Master’s couldn’t? If you know, could you possibly compare and contrast the two?

You don’t need a PHD unless you want to be a professor. Also if you’re set on getting a PHD perhaps consider studying phycology instead (PSYD)

I’m so confused. I would really like some more advice. About to get my associates, but I have no clue what I’m supposed to do while I’m in school to get my bachelors. Am I suppose to get relevant experience during this time? Or is it a part of the masters process? I live in Michigan , I plan to Go to Central Michigan University for the Online Counseling Program Thank you so much
