Good advice. I did not recognise the three categories but have found I have three pairs of boots covering exactly the terrains you identified. Super production as always... great effort. Much appreciated. In the three categories you mentioned I went for mountain - German Miendl wider fitting with super ankle support. I need them as I broke an ankle in the mountains and had to walk off with an improvised crutch one year and now the ankle is weak when I get tired, so worth adding stiff ankle support is also a good trait. For an All Rounder the ultra comfy UK Brasher boot which one can just live in everyday and for low land stalking I found a pair of US lightweights the name of which escapes me... very flexible lots of feel but not up to UK or NZ levels of woodland damp and I had to add extra waterproofing.

I sometimes used to stalk easy Canterbury alpine flats in bare feet, with my boots tied around my neck, to keep it as quiet as possible, and to feel each twig so I would not snap it under foot. I shot at least one evening flats deer while in bare feet. My boot preferences these days are Zamberlan and Scarpa, but while working for NZ Forest Service and while hunting in the 1970s and 80s I always wore lace-up all-rubber Ashley boots, for dry feet, long boot-life, and comfort. In those days however, leather boots were quite shoddy, poorly-made things compared with boots these days with their excellent sole/upper bonding and water-proofing in boots today. Leather hunting boots and outdoor boots in general these days are very strong, very comfortable, very durable, and very expensive. But, good boots are worth every bit of their price. The one piece of outdoor equipment you should never skimp on when buying them, is your boots. I have three pairs of boots: one pr. for higher and harder alpine terrain (Zamberlan), one pr. for medium-to-high terrain Scarpa), and one pr. for easy terrain (Timberland) where I'm carrying a light pack or no pack. A heavier pack demands a heavier boot, virtually no matter what the terrain.

Had Zamberlan's for a few years. Solid pair of boots, can recommend them without any doubt.

If you want a hard wearing boot i can recommend the Lowa hunter gtx evo extreme boots, I wear a size 48, but at 6'6" and 230lbs I'm pretty hard on my boots. They are a bit warm in really hot weather, but they are 100% waterproof, and give great ankle support.
