Although Stephan is amazing at explaining technique and how to perform the moves, he's an amazing second man as well. Asking perfect logical questions, and demonstrating exactly what can happen if you mess up exactly when he needs to show it. Humble, good at being the practice dummy while still teaching from the sidelines. Bravo.

I concur. I always try to talk when being the submission dummy in order to provide feedback on what is happening. A lot of times, the pain inflicted is not where the aggressor imagines it to be, or they do something unintentional that is very effective and should try to duplicate. The whole area of being an effective target is a large area of skill in BJJ training, being able to give increasing levels of resistance and providing feedback etc.

LOVE this series!!! I'm a girl and usually the smaller opponent. And I do get a lot from newbies (or guys about my weight) how they hate to be submitted by a girl (just heard it again yesterday, haha). But the bigger and more experienced guys are really trouble for me. I can only get them by speed, technique and/or surprise. But it is not easy fighting heavy gorillas! ;))) Thanks for showing us your tricks Mister Wolverine ;) Also pleansant for the eye if I may say so ;)

one thinks as a beginner that fight do not require mental skills(or only a few)... in fact is quite the opposite... i think that learn a fight style with lot of ground techniques will train a mind as if it were studying a difficult scientific problem... like my master says... "It's a chess game"... and i'm just starting to learn "these" techniques... and i love them more and more... i think that self defense, ground defense and martial arts in general should be mandatory in schools...

Thank You for sharing all this, Mr. Kesting, it is absolutely wonderful! :D You guys teach so clearly and every move is so effective, i'm amazed how i'm improving my "survival" with 30 to 50 Kg bigger opponents thanks to these tips, techniques and mindsets! btw, the "happy" and joyful way you approach this chess-game like Art is beautiful and fills my heart with passion and desire to get on the mat again and more! Thank You! Live Life in A Breath! Namasté! Aloha! ;)

So to maintain side control, just switch into kesa or reverse kesa depending on escape tactic...

Just an FYI, once you get that "window washer" to your second leg over that arm, You don't want to stay there too long, The bottom guy will grab your gi or usually the back of the pants with that hand and "pull" with his left hand on your lapel to get the top guy to pull, now he "pushes" to get the reversal.

I have a few questions. I like this video but when you take the sidemount as high as you do on 4:10 - 4:45 can you shrimp (as i believe you guys call it) or ebi from underneath you? And on 6:15 until about 6:38 isnt there alot of room for him to bridge you over? Or cant he because your are hip to hip and have control of the arms? I stumble upon the problem that bigger and stronger people are able to bridge you over easier. Again i love the video's! Sorry if the english is bad but im dutch so

When he switches his hips and does the sort of twister-side-control thing, would it be better to do it Eddie Bravo style and put the left arm under their left arm pit? (As opposed to on the mat next to the head, as shown here)

on the last technique where you deliver the large push wouldn't the availability of a bridge and roll present itself for the big guy on the ground? is there a defense if he goes for a bridge and roll?

There's a 17 year old blue belt at my class, she's female and barely over 5 feet tall, and she's like a deadly little spider I can't get off me. There's a 40+ year old dude at my class, he's fat and out of shape, and he crushes me every time we roll. It's all about your techniques. It's not about your body, it's about how you use your body. Jits will work for you and improve your quality of life immeasurably - if you can take it.

Especially as a white belt, stuff like this will help you control and annoy the crap out of a higher belt. Even if you dont tap them, you control them and dont let them tap you-- and to me that's a win.

I used to get Kesting's DVD's back when I trained. I used to think of him as Paulson 2.0. In the fact that he explained and broke down high percentage moves in so much detail, with why you do what you do. Paulson showed so many more moves, but rarely tied in the "why" and "how", and the all important, "what to to if...". A true teacher, as opposed to a demonstrator.
