Marcelo Garcia from tinyurl.com/3dgzy6h talks with Stephan Kesting (tinyurl.com/3u3ks8e) about the techniques he uses to sweep and submit a bigger, stronger opponent
When I was a young teen I was so skinny that Marcelo actually seemed so buff lol. I just turned 30 last week & I realize just how small he really is. So much respect for him & his jiu jitsu. Him & kron gracie are my favorites
I like Hickson , and in terms new guys I like Gordon Ryan , I can't believe Dillon Danis with his cocky attitude ever got his bjj black belt from MG is just strange how polar opposites they are. He is a lot more talented than ppl give him credit for in bjj at least. But in fight things change I would love see Khazmat fight him. I digress lol 😆into my not liking his student
Marcelo is without a doubt my favorite bjj guy ever. His moves are practical , no crazy rubber guard shit or complicated set ups. plus we have a similar body shapes so its easy for me to apply his moves when I'm going live. Dude is a true master and pioneer.
I was getting smashed by bigger guys for the first three and half years until I started working the butterfly sweep. That sweep position has saved my ass so many times. There's a lot of other little details that will help that he doesn't mention, but it's definitely position worth studying if you're always getting smashed by bigger guys.
Most people who are learning want to learn fancy things. Marcelo is giving some great insight into the RNC here. Amazing details that make the difference. Anyone can practice an RNC once with a guy letting you do it, but when someone is defending it is a different game. These are awesome little tips, great video!
I really like how he explains things, he doesn't bs and is succinct and understands and explains well different things that can occur and ways to react.
i agree with auzziesoceroo - stephan your teaching is excellent. i don't even do bjj but you make me want to make time for it because your pace - even with a guest teacher - removes the intimidation of the learning curve. bravo.
Marcelo Garcia and Stephan Kesting! Two cool dudes sharing their knowledge, thanks alot!! Im going down to roll with the bigger guys in 15 mins! one love!
@getthetapjj I see what you mean about the slicing power. Very interesting! Also, this seems to put more pressure on the back being pushed into the front, vs the front being pulled into the back. An interesting distinction. Thanks for the clarity, love the channel!
I was (still am?) in the same boat as Marcelo. I started jiu jitsu a year and a half ago at 16 years old as a small mexican kid with no kids class, and watching Marcelinho really gave me a model of what I could be (at least in sport jiu jitsu) and what kind of game I could have. Initially training with grown men I think actually helped my jiu jitsu increase in terms of adaptivity, I'm not afraid nor hesitant to attack because of a strength gap. THanks steph and marcelo!
butterfly is great! By all means learn it! however i would recommend focusing on the basics before spending your time adding butterfly guard to your game
I Wish he would added the obvious which he was a master of although a guy may be stronger he's leveraging his strength so we must learn to leverage our speed advantage as well during scrambles, etc Marcelo es a God at this. Like it was Art in motion everytime I regret not seeing him live.
thx man.. this thing worked straight off the bat:) first try and swoop sweep!! even almost got it the second time also with the foot sweep.. gonna try this on more of the big mofos
@ajahni what belt are you? im in the queens area. been looking for a good school. Marcelo's is a bit too pricey for me. Not saying its not worth it but i just cant afford it. and by the way, does he personally teach there?
I'm thinking about moving to NY just so I can get this kind of training everyday, I used to play around with inverted guard and de la riva a lot till I started watching more of Marcelo. Also being 220 pounds, I've realized it doesn't make sense to play that kind of game all the time. He makes it seem so easy.
During the rear naked choke, MG says he never does something with the palm of his hand, but I couldn't hear. Do you know what it was? I start palm toward myself and peel into the back of the head by rotating to palm downward. Did he say that was good or bad?
all the guys in my gym have 45 lbs on me and more then a year of study. i have 6 months, so this will help alot. as long as i remember it when it counts lol. thanks for another great video.
I wish I was only at 45lbs disadvantage. It is more like 50kg disadvantage for me at my gym haha! Granted there are some that only got about 10kg on me but still... its rough being on the lighter end of the spectrum. You posted almost a year ago, hows it going for you now?
David Reljanovic basics like safe hands, working on good base, and keeping those guys busy. ive lost the couch potato fat so now most guys have 55 , to 65 lbs but ive earned the nick names weapon x, lol. im loving bjj more and more. hope things are going well at your gym. Stephan Kesting on you tube is a good place ive found , lots of high percentage moves and tips to improve. good luck to ya.
@zackhanscom it can be applied in "reality." There are different dynamics in different environments and this knowledge still is very useful if you understand its place.
so humble, so good at what he does!! very good example of what a Martial artist should be. I think he could beat Khabib!!! you are so blessed if you train under him..
I love Marcelo's philosophy of only using the guillotine, RNC, and North/South choke as far as arm chokes are concerned. I still use the Darce/Brabo a lot as well, just because it's so versatile in entries/setups and finishing positions, but I pretty much stay away from other head and arm variations.
Quick anatomy lesson, It doesn't matter how big you are, you simply don't have anything covering certain vulnerable areas. The trachea, gonads, eyes, and kidneys have no muscle cover so no matter how big the guy it still takes the same amount of force to injure the target area as a small guy. Large persons also only have a modest increase in bone density so small joint manipulations will still break or dislocate a wrist hand or elbow. And yes a 10 year old can do these to an adult.
yeah thanks for your advice, i guess itl be better in the long run if i get better at finishing the choke normally or transitioning to something else. someday il probably fight someone i cant finish like that. i also didnt know anything about the cutting of the teeth thing and i would in no way want to cause a serious injury to my friends, even if it loses me a few fights.
I train at AOJ and we have some big dudes that take jiu jitsu seriously. The better my technique and my attention to small details helps me. If I can bait the bigger guy on some of my sweeps I might not be able to submit them, but I can definitely fight them off lol
I don't disagree that it can take a vast difference in technical ability and I'm not insisting that it can be done consistently but I've seen some really amazing differences in size and strength overcome by technique.
@zackhanscom most street fights end up on the ground...if you know some jiu jitsu and the other guy doesnt, you will easily control him and either tie him up and clobber his head in, or just choke him out or something even if the other guy is striking, a good jiu jitsu fighter will almost always win (unless you get hit with a haymaker right off the bat and get knocked out) jiu jitsu is probably one of the most effective martial art for winning a street fight IMO....muay thai too
can someone help me with this? i dont understand why people bother fighting to lift the chin? im pretty small and can finish rear naked chokes when they have their chin down, i pretty much just apply a lot of pressure. it pretty much crushes their chin and they either tap from that or lift their chin. of course i dont want to injure any of my friends. could this cause serious or permanent injuries? should i not do it or do you think its their fault for not tapping?
are pressure point attacks allowed in BJJ? like could i poke my thumb up under the chin to lift the guys head so i can get the rnc? Cuz there's some point attacks under the chin that would definitely force him to lift it and expose the neck.
@hapaboi39 it's not always good to roll with bigger guys.. at the beginning of my sw/bjj career I only had these big, muscular guys to roll with and it helped me to never try and outmuscle opponets (cause I'd always lose).. and my defense got really good but my offense is still terrible since I never got a chance to get to those good positions where I could submit them, since a stronger white belt will win against a weaker white belt
BJJ is great for one on one fight...Most important the bjj techniques causes less grevious injury than anything else thus you may be able to avoid and legal issues. Combing it with muay thai ull be pretty awesome. The best thing when faced with multiple attackers???? RUN :D ;)
I think what you asking is when he gets the full rear naked he make sure he keeps his palm facing him (MG) and close so the other guy can not grab his hand and peel it
@badass76ta you are million percent correct say you have garcia vs some 400 pound blue belt the blue belt will die but say you take two people that have skill level but the other is ten times the size hw will win
I am often training with a guy who is about 30kg (~60lbs) heavier than me. I would never pull any kind of guard against him, because he would literally crush me down. Any tips for gaining top position against heavier opponent?
haha marcelo is the best, one thing i noticed is that i don't remember what he look like standing, walking on daily basis, i don't think i would recognize him out of context lol
+nunya businezz The problem is you then run into one of the Miyao or Mendes brothers and that size just isn't going to do very much for you there. It is just more mass to grip onto.
***** I'm not quite seasoned in watching others compete, but you can't expect a guy, let alone a small guy, to beat everybody by submission. They're so closely contested that it is near impossible. How about you go and do that, but lets be honest, you are no small guy.
In my experience you cannot just think you are going to win an MMA fight only by using jiu jitsu techniques so you may be right but just in a half, because the same way you cannot expect to win by only kicking and punching. MMA and BJJ are different sports, you just cant say BJJ doesn't work in MMA cause if you watch MMA fights and understand BJJ you will notice BJJ is always present cause it is useful not only for submiting an opponent, but controling distance to be safe or attack.
