How to place your Sonos Sub, or any other sub for that matter

Today, we will learn how to place the Sonos Sub, or any other sub for that matter. You've already spent good money on the sub. Make sure you place it for maximum benefits! I measure the output levels from each position and orientation to find out in an objective manner the best placement for your Sonos Sub!
Where should you place the Sonos Sub? IS the placement important? Does the placement affect the sound?
Do you place the sonos sub on the side? Or standing vertically? If you stand it up straight, do you face the port opening towards you? Or is it ok to face it to the side? Does the orientation affect the sound?
All these questions answered and more!

This section is about me trying to figure out how to fund this channel for future expansion. Tech reviews aren't always cheap. I have to figure out a sustainable way to fund the gear that I am getting so that I can review them for users. I have put in the initial investment of getting the production stuff, including a machine for post production, camera gear and lights.
Each video also requires time. And a lot of it. I didn't realise until I started doing it. And in order to produce content that is differentiated and adding value on top of every other video out there, I had to invest a lot of time to think of ideas, research on methodology, run and conduct the test, record the results, script them into a coherent video, film the video, edit and finally post. The 10 mins that you see on my videos take me an average of 8-12 hours over a couple of days to produce.
All said, I have not gotten direct sponsorships from equipment manufacturers or distributors. Primarily because I am still too small a channel. And on top of that, I feel that having sponsorship obligations mean that I may not be able to say the things that my viewers need to hear, which mayhem not necessarily be the things that the sponsors want me to say.
Which means I have to figure out other means to fund my work on this channel. I am learning and have not figured out the best way to do this. But so far, I have learned about Amazon Affiliate programme, which gives me a small referral fee for every sale that I link to them. I have started doing this but the results aren't showing. The idea is that if I convince my viewers to buy the products that I am talking about through the links that I am providing to the product on Amazon, I get compensated for the effort. I am providing the links, but it isn't always the case that Amazon provides the best deal. And to my viewers, I say, find the best deal. On the internet, it's easy, just a few clicks might nett you a couple of dollars savings. So I don't want to push Amazon Affiliate links if it is not in my viewers' interest.
The second method I have figured out at the suggestion of one of my viewers (John Robinson), is through Patreon. Again, this concept is alien to me and I am not sure how I can provide extra value to my patrons. No doubt I will slowly figure it out but for the moment, I can only list it here - www.patreon.com/peterpee
The third, which is through youtube monetisation, is when I post videos and ads play on the videos that you watch. This is great and it helps but I also recognise that this gets irritating for some viewers. I can only ask for your understanding on this!
At the end of the day, I don't need to fund the full purchase of the equipment that I am to review. I only need to fund the loss of the value of the equipment when I resell them.
Hey, want $20 Off to Sonos Singapore? I thought you'd like them. Here's my link: rwrd.io/l8zohn3?s
It’s a new rewards program by Sonos singapore so I’m not sure how it works. I believe you’ll get some free vouchers or free points when you sign up. And the points they give when you buy from trysonos.sg actually works out to 5% off! No harm signing up I Guess since it’s free.

I've really been learning a lot about my recently purchased Sonos system from your channel; this video, in particular, was really informative. I have my sub gen 3 currently in a vertical position facing the MLP, but will now also try it in a horizontal position to see how that configuration sounds. Can't wait for the Era 300s I ordered from Sonos yesterday to arrive on Tuesday to take the Arc and Sub to the next level!

Just got my ARC and Gen 3 today and just waiting on the One SL pairs. I’m about to set everything up. I’ve been watching his videos on everything Sonos and he is amazing. Can’t wait to hear this. I got a 2020 LG and it has eARC so it should sound even better than how amazing he already said it sounded.
@PeterPee
@PeterPee 4 года назад
Happy to share and hope you are impressed with the sound. First time I heard Sonos I was mildly impressed in the store. When I got it home, I was blown away. Sonos demos in stores tend to be at crowded locations and thus noisy environment. In home environment, they shine better.

Peter Pee I’ve had it for almost two weeks now and I really love it. The sub by itself was a huge addition and then the one sl’s added even more depth. The only issue I’ve had is that no matter what I try I don’t get Atmos. I have a 2020 LG Nano 90 tv that has eARC and pass through but it still doesn’t work. Everything in my setup including my hdmi audioquest cables are all eARC compatible so I think it’s my tv. The pass through isn’t working like it should. I doubt it’s the arc because everything is working beautifully and sounds amazing. Just haven’t been able to test the Atmos which is why I purchased it so it’s frustrating 🤦🏽‍♂️
@PeterPee
@PeterPee 4 года назад
It could be an LG issue. I’ve heard there were plenty of issues with a new firmware update and you might get some answers if you search in that direction. I don’t have a recent LG tv so I can’t help.

The placement is also important for phase alignment of the sub with the stereo pair, ideally it is reinforcing the LF radiation from the stereo par with no lag or gain. My old JL Labs sub had an infinitely variable phase adjustment dial just for that, I'm hoping that truplay does just that; i.e. to correct phase alignment of all speakers as part of its DSP capability.

Finally an empirical test of the sub performance within the 3 possible orientations. Many ads for Sonos have the slot facing the MLP while I have mine placed sideway beside the tv console to save space. Have always wondered if it was the right way to do it since it contravenes most of the Sonos ads I have seen. I can now conclude that the ads are placing slots facing MLP for the maximum visual effect / presentation :)
@PeterPee
@PeterPee 4 года назад
Yes, that’s correct. The visuals are immediately associated with Sonos. :) And there is very little difference as Long as you have space for it to ‘breathe’ a little.

Hey, if you are getting into Sonos first, then I say do it piece by piece. You’ll get wowed every time you add a new pice if equipment to it. The feeling is great! So get used to the sound and then when you’re just about familiar, add another component. And repeat! The order I’d recommend is : arc, followed by one sl for surround, following by sub gen 3. To me it just sounds better.

Yes, absolutely. In a room of that size, you should definitely use a sub to supplement the sound of the main sonos Speakers. Just to be clear, the sub on its own doesn't make music ya. You need to pair it with a sonos speaker.

Hardword. Definitely will change the sound profile. Most of the videos I make are based on my surroundings. I do intend to do a more generic Sonos setup video but because of the new product launches, this keeps getting pushed back. Let us know if you get into any sort of hiccups here and we’ll try to help. For a start, the easier way is just to setup your new arc, then go to the old playbar, remove the surround and the sub. When you remove the sub, it will ask if you want to use it in another room, answer yes and move it to the arc. The removed surrounds you can add them from the arc menu. Then finally perform trueplay.

Great analysis. It seems that the subwoofers are always placed on the floor. If you raised the level of the Sonos subwoofer higher a few feet or on top of a shelf closer to the ceiling would sound be compromised? Wondering if placing a Sonos Sub woofer higher up on a media shelf or tv stand would work.
@PeterPee
@PeterPee 3 года назад
Yes, the sound will be compromised. The floor lends the reinforcement to the sound.

Thank you Peter for the great video! 1 quick question: 1) You mentioned that during Trueplay, i should place the microphone of the handphone point forward, towards the Arc, do i do it right from the start of Trueplay, and i should just do Trueplay while being seated on the sofa? Even if i were to stand up and move around, i should just do it near my usual sitting position on the sofa and not move closer to the Arc?
@PeterPee
@PeterPee 3 года назад
Point upwards towards the ceiling when you’re doing the seated part of true play. When you’re walking around, point it towards the arc. You can walk around your listening area. Sometimes true play will tell you that you have not covered enough space. In that case expand the walking a little more.

Hi Pete! What do you think of wallmounting the subwoofer? Just bought flexson Wall mount. Where should i put it?
@MHBallinonU

Love your videos! I’m a new subscriber. My question is what your think of wall mounting the sub ? Flexson makes a wall mount for the Sonos sub and it looks sweet hanging on wall with a modern decor. Reason I haven’t purchased the $100 mount...will it make the sub performance worst ? What do you think ?
@PeterPee
@PeterPee 4 года назад
Hey there! Thanks for the sub and welcome to the channel! The wall mount is automatically detected by the Arc and what the Arc does, is to reduce the bass output as it would have been very close to the wall and the proximity will reinforce the bass. It won’t make the sub performance worse. In fact, I am thinking it might even increase the crossover point on the arc and give more work for the sub. Currently, the Arc+sub combination without the wall mount has the cross-over point set to about 90 Hz (92Hz to be precise). I’ll be running a test to check if the wall mount changes that.

Hey mate, I just bought this sub and am wondering if it'll be ok to place it on top of a TV cabinet? Position wise I could place it the left but it would be elevated by about 1.7 ft just behind the sonos arc which will be on the lip of the cabinet.

Awesome video ! Would you recommend placing the sub in position 2 in your video but laying down below a TV console with a 3 inch clearance?
@PeterPee
@PeterPee 3 года назад
You can do that but if you move a lot of air, 3 inches is a bit short. I had a 4 inch clearance between the sub and my previous couch and that introduced quite a bit of chaffing. 6 inch will be safe. I have been recommending 6 inch clearance.

First, really like your channel! Great videos! What about placing the sub on furniture, or using a wall mount?
@PeterPee
@PeterPee 4 года назад
Ooohh.. I have never thought of wall mounting a sub before! Well, first off, it's quite heavy so make sure the mount supports it. It doesn't have vibration so that is one less thing to worry about. If you are putting it on furniture, take care to make sure the furniture is strong enough to hold it too! But otherwise, I don't see why there will be problems. Oh ya, remember to give it some room to breathe! Don't close it all up.
@ohadzamor
@ohadzamor 4 года назад
Thank you very much for taking the timeand addressing everyone's questions! This question came up because Sonos wrote that the sub is designed to be placed on the floor. I wonder if placing it NOT on the floor will arm the sound. There is the Flexson wall mount for the sub. It looks very good. What do you think about it? Placing it on tv unit is another option. This will allow more options for designing the living room, and will prevent the vacuum robot from depraving the sub How much distance would you recommend keeping between the sub and the wall behind it?
@PeterPee
@PeterPee 4 года назад
I’d recommend at lest a 4” clearance and if you can allow for it, 6”.
@PeterPee
@PeterPee 4 года назад
And Subwoofers are usually on the floor because it helps reinforce the bass for extra output.

The old adage is, subs are almost omni-directional, as we just aren't evolved to be able to descern low frequency direction (our sculls are literally too small) - you will get very minimal improvements by putting them close to your mid range and tweeters - but really for that cinematic feeling, having them anywhere in the room won't make much difference.

Thanks for all of your videos. I’ll receive my sub gen 3 tomorrow and helped me a lot finding the best placement. I understand that if I add the sub to my beam gen 2 and fives as surround it will automatically adjust or optimize the sound. However, I have another five and a one on the same room, if I group all of them, it will be optimized too? Or I will need to adjust the bass level of the five and one? Thanks again !
@PeterPee
@PeterPee Год назад
The sound optimisation is not auto per say. You have to set it up using trueplay. The extra fives and ones you add to your physical space is not going to be automatically tuned though.
@PeterPee
@PeterPee Год назад
But you can definitely perform trueplay on them too.

Peter, in order to protect the SUB Gen 2 from my roomba vacuum, I keep it on the floor, "sitting" in the foam case in which it was originaly packaged... If I am not mistaken, it should not affect the sound or anything else. Love your videos, informative and detailed.

@PeterPee

Well I actually never had it so high up before. When it’s on the floor, the floor actually acts as reinforcement to the sound for the bass to be stronger. Being higher up might compromise a bit on the output levels.

Thanks for another great video - makes me want to add the sub to my system even more. Do you have experience setting it up with 3rd party speakers using the amp? That’s what I have but I’m afraid that it will not blend in seamlessly, as you know, sonos does not allow the use of trueplay for 3rd party speakers
@PeterPee
@PeterPee 4 года назад
Yes it doesn’t allow for trueplay for 3rd party speakers but with the amp, it allows for the setting of crossover point with the sub. So in that way, you can try to get it to blend in quite well.
@Berdelsan
@Berdelsan 4 года назад
@@PeterPee Right, thats also what i am thinking. I just hear that trueplay takes the sub integration to a new level. But i might be able to make it work using REW and setting the crossover in the amp. Perhaps this could be a future video of yours? I have not seen this procedure tested anywhere :-)
@PeterPee
