Also...is it standard when backpacking that you can't simply set up camp anywhere...and must be at a designated camp site. I plan go do some car camping as well in some blm land and national forests. Any information is helpful. Thanks and great video for a newbie!
Glad the video was helpful Brian! BLM land and National Forest land allow for 'dispersed camping' which means there is more leeway on where you can camp. Generally they prefer that you camp in a designated camping location (even though it doesn't require a reservation) to help limit the environmental impact. Roads are less maintained so would keep that in mind before you venture out.
Good question Brian. It's super super rare that you need a permit for a day hike but there are a few exceptions. One of them is hiking Half Dome in Yosemite but that's one of the most popular hikes in the world. 99% of day hikes you do not need a permit.
