So for a true hike you can go to Mount Immitos. There a plenty there. In the city, check out Lycabettus Hill and Filapappou Hill. Not big hikes but nicest places to walk with great views.
Great video!! I'm coming to Greece Oct 7th - 19th. Glad to hear we will still be able to go swimming! We are going on a 10 night cruise to the Greek islands and staying 2 nights in Athens. So excited!!
I grew up in Michigan, swimming in the little and big lakes (Lake Michigan). It's just a matter of getting "use" to the water temperatures, as long as the water isn't frozen!
I love your videos and they have been a huge source of information throughout planning my Oct. greece honeymoon for 2022. would you consider making a video touching on travel in the midst of possible war with russia?
This was a wonderfully helpful video, thank you. I didn't catch the names/spellings of all the islands but I got the main ones and will be incorporating them into our next itinerary. We plan on going to Greece for a month in the next year or two so these ideas are terrific. I didn't know about the upcoming visa requirement so thanks for the heads up.
@@agirlandherpassport That's nice of you. For example, if you go to timestamp 10:15 there is a name you give that I can't make out, and the CC closed captioning is probably not translating it right. I think CC translated Ios as Eos but I figured that out. Then I can't make out what is said at timestamp 11:00. Putting your full wonderful list in the description might help others.
Awesome video as usual 👌🏽 I appreciate how detail oriented you are with the information you provide. If you can, would you share your thoughts about visiting Greece during Easter? Some destinations are very busy due to spring breakers. What about Greece? Is it crazy busy during March, April, May? Have you been to Meteora?
If you want to experience Greece at Easter time you should check some specific destinations like Meteora, Corfu, Lesvos, Patmos, Vrontado(Chios),Leonidio (Peloponnese),Spetses,Syros. And of course every random picturesque village in Mainland. Please no big cities and very touristy summer places. You wouldn't experience the authenticity of Greek Easter which is the best in the world 😉
Oh yes, some places have some great Easter activities that are worth going to! There won't be many tourists at Easter so even the touristy places would be nice at Easter. Pyrgos in Santorini puts on a great Easter celebration.
@@Gk-ug6gu thank you for the information. Are the activities held during Holy Week, the week before Easter? For catholics, there are processions during the entire week before Easter. Thanks again.
Oooh this is the video I needed! Thank you. My 35th in April so I wanted to travel end of April or end of May during memorial. You mentioned cold beaches.. 😅 will it be cold then?
You’re welcome. In April, I think so. May it depends if we have had a warm spell or not. The water will not be at its warmest until September if that gives you any ideas.
great video! Im going to the island of Amorgos from the USA in may for a yoga retreat ..and Santorini for 2 nites..can I ask, do I need a convertor or just an Adaptor? thanks ..all your info is so helpful
Hi there! Loved your video. It was so helpful. I have a question. Would you recommend traveling to Crete instead of Athens if I want to experience the Islands rather than the city? Im travelin from the US. THANKS
Traveled around Greece about a week ago. Crete is incredible but definitely give yourself some time to see it. It is a HUGE island. We spent two days and definitely needed more time. Will be back to Crete
Not for the Acropolis. You could go the day before you want to get to be sure if you want. Ferry tickets, I say yes. Especially if you have already booked your hotels. No need to wait really. Here is who I use, www.ferryhopper.com/en/?aff_uid=grlps
Well it depends on what you are expecting. It will be hot then and that time of year is more crowded. Although, Lefkada will not be as crowded as some places.
I found a trip on TripAdvisor saying all day trip to agistri, moni, and Aegina. Are those islands where you need more time in Greece to see? I’m staying in Athens for my trip because I’m more of a city person but wanted to do a day cruise.
You can day trip to those places. I prefer to stay one night to really get a feel for the place but you don't have to. Moni requires you to go to Aegina first as Moni is a nature preserve and the boats leave from Aegina and I don't think you can camp on the island.
Hi, Each ferry operator has their own schedule so it isn't all in one place. However, there are ferry booking websites that you can look at to see what your options are. I use Ferry Hopper, www.ferryhopper.com/en/?aff_uid=grlps Hope that helps!
@@agirlandherpassport Thanks for the help. We would like to do island hoping next year. That why I ask the questions. Do you think it's possible? We want to see Santorini, Milos, Rhodes, Myconos. We are going for 10 days.
It’s hard to hop between island chains so Rhodes would be hard to do by ferry. You would have to fly and not all islands are connected by plane. 10 days isn’t really enough time to see all that either. I would stay in the Cyclades only and do Rhodes another time.
traveling with kids 3 year and 1 year old from US first week of October, do we need car seats in Athens or any of the islands. please advise Any other recommendations for week time with kids
Is it a good time to visit during End of April? I have no plans to get into the waters but just go around the places. Will it be cold during the day or will it be warm enough to walk around?
@@agirlandherpassport I mean not VFM. Sure geologically is a very interesting place (an underwater cave, world's lengthiest underwater tunnel, a possible link with the aegean volcanic arc etc) but as a swimmer you don't get to see much since all that "magic" happens underwater.
@@giannistatsiopoulos331 No, you don't and they have it roped off. I can only imagine that it is too big a risk to let people do it. Do you know if they have explored the cave much?
@@agirlandherpassport they have explored a fraction of it. It's not for inexperienced divers. There were some incidents where some rather amateur divers didn't make it alive
How are the beaches, crowds and climate in march/april. My fiance and I are going there march 25-april 9. Are a lot of the businesses (ferries, restaurants) mostly open during that time?
@@agirlandherpassport We are planning to go to santorini (2 days) rhodes (2days) Crete (3 days) fly back to athens (2-3 days) drive to corfu, kefalonia (3days)
@@ivansantosa4450 The water is still going to be chilly so I am not sure you will want to swim. Also, Santorini will be very quiet. Check the ferry schedules for Santorini. It is a lot to fit in a such a short period of time especially considering how far apart all the places you are visiting are so far apart. Also driving to Corfu will take some time plus an hour on the ferry to Corfu. Just something to keep in mind.
If it were me, this is what I would do. Athens, Santorini and Crete. Crete is massive and you will regret not staying longer. You could squeeze in Rhodes but I wouldn’t try to do another country will all the testing you may or may not need.
Excellent tips! I agree with the best time to visit Greece is in September, water still warm and less touristy ! We also get Euros from ATMS best rates. I’ve been in Greece over 13 times and I have yet to make to Santorini, since my husband is from Kato Nevrokopi- Dramas so the island we visit the most is Thassos, hopefully soon I will get to visit the Cyclades Islands.
@@agirlandherpassport True, and, sadly, Fira and Oia got ruined by the influx of retailers (many high-end), fast food places, and other non-Greek crap. The Santorini I saw in 1996 was WAY different than the one I saw again in 2017.
When I went to the Greek islands years ago, landlords would be waiting at airports and by the ferry ports, to offer accomodations to arriving tourists. I never made advance reservations for a place to stay, not even for the night of arrival - but those were pre-Airbnb days. This arrangement gave travelers a lot of flexibility regarding making their plans to island hop. My question is: is it still the same? Or would you recommend to make advance reservations for accomodations? What about the ferries: book in advance, or book once over there?
It doesn’t happen much as most people now book in advance. If you are coming in the high season, I wouldn’t come unless you have a hotel reservation as Greece is so popular now you might be sleeping on a beach. Ferry reservations are the same. If you come in late September or October then you could do this and can do it in May and possibly June.
Thank you for this advice on traveling to Greece! We are arriving to Athens early June then flying to Santorini to work our way back through Naxos and maybe Paris. Question: we land around 1pm on a Sunday . What would be a safe time for our family of 4 to schedule a flight with Aegean to Santorini? Assuming we’ll need time to process through customs and navigate the airport. Our luggage will be carry on only. Thanks in advance!
Very good tips and suggestions in this video. And as you hinted, there are some awesome islands that most folks know nothing about yet are way less crowded and far cheaper.
What great tips for travel to Greece! I come every year and stay at least a month, but I go to more remote islands (Northern Sporades-Alonissos/Skopelos). I’ve twice come end of August and stayed for September-including last year. But I prefer June because if you’re going remote, there are less ferries running later. Small islands also stop restocking some supplies (including restaurants) and my biggest thing is that fruits and vegetables are better earlier in summer. I can’t have gluten (surprisingly this can be unexpectedly challenging on small islands) so fresh produce is mostly the main staple of safe food for me. The tomatoes and onions are actually worth a red eye into Athens where I overnight, a flight into Skiathos (where I sometimes have to overnight too), and the ferry to Alonissos. Lol. They’re that good. I find remote travel in Greece to be a hassle, I’ve had both cancelled flights and ferries (and missed my flight home), but I will tell you it is absolutely, no doubt, worth it. It’s a dream destination. (And PS-I now try to get to Athens two days before I leave with the U.S. covid testing requirements.)
Thank you! Oh the vegetables are amazing here. The not stocking up on the remote islands is definitely a thing. This is definitely not the case on the less remote islands as they have larger year round populations. Two days with COVID testing is a great plan and Athens is always a good choice.
No mention about Milos? I'm planning a honeymoon trip with the agent of visiting places in last week of September. Will everything be open? Planning 2/3N Santorini, 2N Milos, 1/2N Athens and 1N Meteora. Wanted to go Navagio/Zaykynthos but don't know how to club it.
Thank you! You can’t take a ferry from Paros to Zakynthos. They are very far from each other. You will have to go back to Athens from Paros and fly to Zakynthos
Great video! We will be in Santorini in September 10… and really want to see another island… probably Milo’s … how can I get there from Santorini? Should I stay there overnight? Thank you
You're only option is by ferry. You will likely have to stay overnight as the ferry schedules aren't made for day trips. You can check the ferry schedule here, www.ferryhopper.com/en/?aff_uid=grlps
Hi…great videos/tips. We are flying in from Malaysia to Athens in early September. We want to do one island probably Mykonos for 1 or 2 days & then come on back to Athens for 2/3 days before our next destination which is probably Italy. Any advise or recommendations on a pleasant ,nice, safe & affordable place in the city of Athens proper to stay? Someone mentioned PLAKA. Pls advise, thanks❤

We are going in May, want to do day trips from Athen to cities like Delhi. Is it possible to do by bus? Is it very difficult to manage? Do I need to buy bus ticket ahead of time? Is May busy season?
The bus is pretty easy. You might want to buy them the day before but there are several buses a day to Delphi. May is not the busy season in Greece. It starts to get busy in June.
Direct from Kos to Naxos is impossible. You can take an indirect ferry but it would take a long time. It would be easier to go back to Athens and then take the ferry or fly. You can fly to Santorini from Kos so you could in theory fly to Santorini and then take the ferry to Naxos from there. Kos to Santorini is easy to fly.
Hello Tiffany, I'm planning to go this year to Rome. Which is this easiest way to go the airport ? ( I mean by suburban or subway). It's going to be my first time outside of Greece 🤣
To a comment by you about travelling by sea to the islands: the great writer Lawrence Durrell quotes an old Arab proverb, namely that the soul cannot travel faster than a camel. I have only managed that once, from Piraeus to Chania, an overnight sail. Arriving in Souda (the port for Chania) terribly early in the morning is an experience in itself: sun rising, the weather is cold but warming up quickly, life begins. It's a great way to travel :) - if you have the time then it certainly beats flying.
Should I plan and get ferries prepared for a trip I have planned later this year? Or I just need to get the flights done and get to the islands and from there finding a ferry and getting a ticket isn’t a hassle? Or will the price be different if I find them now versus later?
Depends on when you are coming. If it is August, book now. September might be good to book now too. Ferry tickets don’t really change when booking in advance.
@@agirlandherpassport plan on doing a few days In Athens and spend the rest of my time in naxos, Paros and Ios, because they’re all so close to each other. Thinking maybe fly to naxos from Athens and do the ferries for the rest of course. I plan on going last week of September !
@@agirlandherpassport also is there still a decent party scene in Ios in end of September? I don’t need a crazy but I don’t mind a little bit of partying lol.
