I've done my IFR training at KHIO and KMMV was one of go to places for IAP practices. Always good to hear familiar airports in your channel.

My first long flight after I received my instrument rating way back in 1989 was from KPWA to KTAZ. That was approximately 463 nautical miles. I filed IFR, but unfortunately, most of the weather was VFR. I learned real fast how expensive it can be since ATC vectored me around Oklahoma City for about 20 miles before I had to remind them to resume me back on course towards Tulsa. That probably added an extra .4 on the Hobbs. We did not have GPS back then and I actually “ran out of navaid” because the distance between two of the VOR was greater than 180 miles. Those routes changed since many of the VOR and ADF sites have been decommissioned since. Mostly, due to the weather always being nice out here in the Midwest or stormy I do most of my IFR currency in a Redbird simulator. I also practice on Microsoft flight simulator and leave the weather conditions as rainy. This insurance that you take off and land in hard IFR.

“an instrument approach at each airport”… what if you hit four airports not just three yet due to traffic flow get pushed into the visual at one of them?

Why not just say 'unable' and request an IAP?

I took my son and a friend on a flight from KPAE to KMMV back in the early 2000s, but VFR. That was a really nice flight and the museum was excellent.

Thank you, just did the KRNT to KMMV on the flight sim, not being from around the area it was interesting to see all of the scenery around Seattle and Portland. Ive just done the return flight plan as suggested back to KRNT and hope to get that in today.

I did my instrument training out of S50, just 9 miles south of RNT. For the XC I did MMV and AST because Astoria actually had IMC on what was otherwise a gorgeous spring day the rest of the area Also, PWT might be a better option than Olympia. RNAV with LPV on both 02 and 20, and ILS for runway 20. And anyone training out of RNT will be MUCH more familiar with that airport than Olympia

Haha yeah I’ve done approaches and landings at PWT countless times. I picked Olympia just cause it’s on the way south anyways and thought it could be fun to go somewhere else for a change. But yeah PWT may be safer in order to get the 3 different approaches. I love S50. Despite training out of RNT I basically learned to land at auburn.

I combined the night dual commercial and the 3 point cross country in a 182rg

My day dual commercial was combined with my my IFR XC. But that’s a good way to save money.

When do you file each flight? On the ground at the initial departure point or at each destination as you land and taxi back?
@Themajesticnature
@Themajesticnature 3 месяца назад
If I am not mistaken, FAA recommends to file it before departure, unless an emergency occur, therefore, file the changes as soon as practicable.

I haven’t done a true multi-leg flight IFR, but if I were planning on multiple flight plans, I would file them all before you leave the first airport to avoid delays. Just set your departure times for intermediate legs based on prior leg ETE times and how long you plan to stop before initiating the next leg. I believe you have about a 2-hr buffer on your planned departure time before you have to refile, and if you set your times based on information you have right before your initial departure, then you should be well within that window for your subsequent legs.
