I was the planer and boring mill man at everworth tool for yrs Sure miss that job even the 70 hour weeks , all work was for a steel mill out in Pennsylvania. So it was all big stuff a ton or more. I had to make the hold downs for the planer in my small shop. Might seem tedious but now yrs later wish I could go back.

That's why I have my shop, need stuff to keep the old mind active and there is nothing like figuring out the problems that come up :) Just don't know if I want to handle the big stuff, sounds like too much work :)

Steve, you could fix anti-pigeon spikes onto the arm of the planer. That should stop Don leaning on it and making the place look untidy.

I think Steve put Rat Trap stick sheets on the floor and Fly trap sheets on the Rockford Arm that is why Don is stuck there.

Hi Steve if you canted the clapper box to right or left depending what side you are cutting there would be no need to lift cutting tool on return stroke. This is standard procedure. B .Reilly a time served planer Glasgow Scotland.

I had an idea. See if you like it. To prevent using the wrong lever, make some covers for the knobs. Cubes open on one side so it can slip over the knobs you don't want to use. when your fingers contact the angles they'll tell it's the wrong knob. (Make round ones too if they aren't round.) Good vids.
@10swatkins
@10swatkins 9 месяцев назад
Not a bad idea. In this case it was just hitting the lever that made it go into that gear... Now it can't :)

Excellent job Steve!!! Couldn't do it any better myself! Thanks for sharing. Talking about Don hanging on the cross rail. The Rockford planer I ran many years ago had basically the same cross rail but it stuck out roughly another three feet! The tracer attachment hung off of it. The table the templates attached to bolted to the side of the planer table. The tracer and mounting plate I guess was around 400 lbs.! I'm sure it didn't sag any with that tracer attached either. Ken

Worked on Bridgeports for many years. I always thought they ground them. This is very interesting. The tool room guys said after grinding. it is within tenths and will slide perfect,,,lol. Yea right, always have to do them . have a power scraper and a flaker that we no longer use. Semi-retired.

Maybe you should add a safety railing to the planer arm, so Don can get a stepladder and climb up there. Imagine the comment "engagement"!!! Might even see that half-thou of displacement IF he jumps up & down.

I have run a Rockford open sided planner/shaper only 36" I'm sorry you get lambasted with Know it all's wannaBe's. Some times they make me laugh with their "only one way to do things" Yes Steve I'm still in the TRADE! At work every day and I Have a shop at Home to same Scale as yours. The other problem with bowing an angle is that the angle changes. Planing that away will bring the original angle back. You mentioned 42 degrees. That’s an odd number.

Without knowing the controls of your machine this may not be feasible... but a potential alternative / addition to the wooden block would be to put something tactile on the control you don't want to touch. As soon as your fingers feel it you get mental feedback. You could stretch one of Don's dirty socks or underwear over the handle. Imagine the power of THAT mental feedback when your mind registers what you have hold of...
@10swatkins
@10swatkins 2 года назад
No way to do that.... The cross slide has nothing to warn you of movement.... And God will get you for even suggesting Don's dirty underwear should ever touch my beloved planer! It's bad enough that I let Don touch it! :)

@10swatkins
@10swatkins 2 года назад
I just use the planer gauge to get the tool height set close.... Remember the bed of the machine is used as the reference plane, just like a surface table.. I will then use a dial indicator to sneak up to the final surface to make everything just right...

Steve, awesome episode, I've never seen a Bridgeport table planed in like that before, I really wasn't sure how they did them. Anyhoo, question for you. The Bridgeport I use on a daily basis is a mid 80s 2J variable speed job. With the usual wear issues. You said the tables get distorted from clamping with the T-nuts, I can see how that would happen. But what about wear? You mentioned .008 wang in the other video, is that all from the table distortion, or is some of it wear? Anyway, thanks for the videos, very informational and educational.
@10swatkins
@10swatkins 2 года назад
It is almost all from peening the underside of the t slots over the years.. I have seen one that was .020.. Heavy hand on the t nuts! IF it was .005 I would have power scraped it and skipped the planing... " Over 5 it take a ride"

Such a awesome machine honestly don’t understand why more of them haven’t been kept just because of the cost to run and accuracy of the machine it’s one of the cheapest tooled machines you can get most of it is hss and easily made your self
