The powder coat wasn’t applied properly. I don’t know why. But you’re not right about powder coat. I’ve been doing it for years. For outdoor equipment like that the metal needs to be properly prepared. Then a powder undercoat and after that the top coat. If they did it correctly, using the correct powders for outdoor use, it’s extremely durable. What happened there, I don’t know.
That's the problem,,, You can't tell if they properly prepared it from looking at it! I can't count the number of things I have bought that fail like this... I know where there are 1500 keypad pedestals that are failing right now.... My loader is failing, my 20 foot flatbed trailer and the 16 foot dump trailer is failing also... Absolutely have no way of telling if the prep was done correctly till it fails on you... Then it is too late and one hell of a job to strip it all off and save the machine, trailer or parts....
@@10swatkins honestly, I’m really surprised. Many autos and trucks have been powder coated for years without a problem. Usually acrylic or acrylic/polyester. They’re very tough. They last for a pretty long time on boats.
I'm glad it worked for you, Steve. I have owned several John Deere (JD) utility tractors, and every time I encounter the first empty tank, I remove the strainer and install an inline filter (I also put in a shutoff valve). The inline filter is included in the scheduled fluid and filter changes. I have a friend who is a JD technician, and he frequently replaces these strainers, yet JD never resolves the underlying issue. What kind of mechanic or practical engineer would design a screen at the bottom of a tank that can't be changed without draining all the diesel? Yes, you can buy or clean the strainer, but why would you ever put it back in?
I'm not defending JD at all in what I'm about to type. It has been my experience that oftentimes what we attribute to engineering buffoonery is actually a well-engineered solution to very poor requirements. Meaning to say, engineering cannot overcome poor requirements (ostensibly formulated by people whose motivations are not customer-friendly.)
Thinking having a small auxillary 1 gallon tank for testing would of saved a lot of head scratching about a supply issue but monday morning quarterbacking is easy.
The diabetes med has another side effect you may not have heard of . Some people are having gallbladder attacks & emergency surgery to remove them. I think the powder coat problem may be caused by poor prep work on the part before coating . I have had the same peeling thing on some of my equipment .
Good rant Steve. My tractor has steel tank, so rust clogged the strainer in my water separator. So I added a Wix 33033 inline similar to your fix. Based on another post below, I'll be changing it to a Wix 33270.
Two things Steve, 1- Why was it plugged up so bad? You should look in to that problem. 2- That screen is on John Deere"s parts website. No one is hiding it. It sounds like you need a better parts guy. Or learn how to find that kind of thing yourself. JD has all that stuff online.
Don't know... Trash in fuel over the years.... IF it's not in the manual and not on the page they give you with all the filters on it it is somewhat hidden. Looking parts up on the parts website is not what I consider in plain site when it should be a maintained item.
@@10swatkins Are you looking at the owners manual or do you have the shop manual. They are two separate books. Always have been. Shop manuals are pretty size-able. The one we have for our 8110 FWD is about 3 or so inches thick.
Too many engineers have zero real world experience. I see this on about every piece of machinery I work with. Stupid designs is one of the few things on which Deere cannot claim a monopoly.
@@10swatkinsI am behind on my videos or I could have told you about this problem. We install the inline strainer like the 5425 had and cut that in tank junk off. Be sure to get a strainer to put in and not that filter as a filter poses too much restriction since you already have the big filter to pull thru too. I reckon John Deere figures that but clean fuel and keep it clean in the manual covers them from the fact they stuck that rinky sink strainer in the tank. Lol
@@bcbloc02 So, What you are saying is that this is NOT Don's Fault and it's all your Fault! :) Doing this...Taking a suggestion from earleclemans4836 I'm going to replace the metal filter with one that for sure is a strainer. www.fleetfilter.com/filter/33270.html Have one ordered now .... Have never heard of doing it that way, love this internet of things !
@@10swatkinsyou dont want a paper filter on suction side . And any line that has the cloth on it get rid of it. I worked for deere for 21 years and now do it on my own
@@10swatkins we carried rolls of hose in service truck to replace that hose it is suspectable to cracking and sucking air. Wix makes inline strainers that look just like a standard inline filter
Yeah powder coat can suck up a ton of moisture when improperly applied. I've seen quite a few pieces of equipment over the years where the powder coat will still look perfect, but the metal underneath is so rusted you can poke a screwdriver through it. Great video as always Steve 👍👍
Hate to tell you all that JD has had stuff made in Mexico for many years. They have plants all over the world just like CAT and many others. Nothing new about it and not trying to be a smart ass about anything, just stating some facts. You can look it up if you like.
@@diegojines-us9pc Oh it works, just ran non stop for the 5 days we were without Utility Power... Just will not start automatically when the power goes out... I have to push a button to start it :)
The tail end of the hurricane reached southern Ontario this morning, barely any wind, and the power went out. Mostly rain, that's about it. That all thread idea seems pretty good.

Hope you can find a decent generator technician. Kohlers usually work better than that. Must be something failed in the automatic transfer switch or wired incorrectly between the ATS and the generator auto start input although that generator did have to crank a long time before it finally started.
From what I can see it has to be in the main control board on the generator... That is a totally new transfer switch and it behaves just like the old one. Problem is that main board is 1600.00 and I am not sure it is totally the problem.... Plus the fact that a new board might have to be programmed leave me in a pickle... I have looked for a tech and no one wants to repair things, just put in new ones...
@@10swatkins - Can you find an installation/programming manual for the generator or main control board and the ATS? Manufacturers have gotten really bad about not wanting to give those things to owners which does make do-it-yourself maintenance nearly impossible.
@@jtwhite2084 The equipment came with all the manuals.... There is little help there.... The ATS is new and doing the same thing as the old one so the problem is not with it.... It even senses when the utility come back on and shuts the generator down and moves the ATS back to utility power... Something inside the main switch panel is not starting the generator and thus the ATS is not transferring after the generator power gets started and stable... That panel is potted and non repairable... Only way to check it out is to replace it, at about 1600.00 I now have 2 generators that are doing the same thing :(
We live in a very remote area. There is no grid, we are just at the end of the line. So on ocasion our power goes out, sometimes for 12 hrs, or more. We have a generator I conect to the electric pannel. I have to turn off the main breaker. The problem is, how do I know when the power comes back on. A friend of mine and I came up with the idea. We conected a light above the main breaker, so when the power comes on the light comes on. Thanks for the viedos.
I put one of these on the power from the utility company basically where you put your light. It takes a surge for the whole house and has a green light that is on when there is power. Sorta double duty :) www.intermatic.com/Catalog/us/Products/Surge-Protection/Whole-House-Surge/IG1240RC3
In the wastewater treatment plant where I used to work we had 5 different generators with automatic transfer switches. We used the services of commercial rated electriciand for our generators and general power for pumps and machines, most of our power was 480 3 phase. Try an industrial electrician, they may do private generator work
Thanks for the idea..... I'm pretty sure its the main board on the generator now... Just hate to spend 1600 on a guess and would like to just have someone with the software check it out,,,
So far my Generac 18kw has started up nicely on each power failure i have had over the past year in north Texas. I'm getting too old to drag my old roll around 5500w beast. Now i just count to twelve and power is back.😊
I have a 28kw Generac I purchased 2 years ago that starts up every Saturday morning at 10:00 and runs for 7 min automatically to charge the battery and do a systems check. I can see the results on my phone app. Power went out a couple of weeks ago for 10 hours...the Generac started automatically, ran for 10 hours and shut down when power was restored. Couldn't be happier.
I wondered how you were doing-I was monitoring family situations in Houston even though I’m in New Hampshire this week. I saw the eye was going right over you. Something like 2.6M electric customers in Harris County lost power. Glad the branch didn’t fall on the motorhome. Stay safe!
Way to keep going in a little wind! Thanks for sharing. I’ve been in a few hurricanes living in south Florida. No power was always the worst, no AC. Finding gas gets tough when the power is out. Especially when it’s out for days. Glad the tree kinda just missed your motor home. Just a little kiss by the looks of it…
Yep just a kiss I think,,,, I hate it after hurricanes with no AC... Back when Rita Hit My Paramedic Station lost power and I had to work 5 days straight... Ended up sleeping on the floor of a near by Fire Station.... Oh what fun!
