Matt, as an old man of 60, I've lost some of the strength and stamina of a younger man. What I've discovered is that I've been pushing down too much when using hand tools (including planes), and was neglecting the use of a lubricant on my hand tools. Do you have any suggestions on how to "walk the board" when planing a long board? Also, I'm a disabled woodworker who has a dicken's of a time standing longer than 1 minute. No one on the Internet has attempted to invent techniques for the handicapped wood or metal shop hobbyist, and since you are a talented communicator and are quite inventive, you are the perfect person to tackle the realm of the levels of disabilities and related shop techniques. I've been working with wood and metal since I was 8 years old. Thank you, sir. Keep on teaching, you're a natural!

Hi Matt. I bought my first house in 1985 and since then have been a keen DIYer. I’ve taken on most things with a varied amount of success. Wallpapering and anything involving wood were probably my greatest successes and probably because I enjoyed them the most. I always promised myself that I would do more woodworking when I had the time and finally at 59, I have the time to do projects for fun, not just because my house (or wife) need them. I bought a plane many years ago and used it occasionally but never really got on with it. Fortunately the things I was building with wood didn’t really require using a plane. A couple of days ago I stumbled across my old plane and on closer inspection I decided that my previous lack of success was probably due to me not actually knowing how to set it up. So after a bit of searching I found your video on setting up a plane, then I watched the one about sharpening the blade, then this one. I’ve learnt a lot already and I’m now going to go through your through your back catalogue to see what other gems I can learn about my recently revived hobby. Thank you and all the best. Steve.

I have NEVER, EVER, seen a video in which kinetics is explained. BRILLIANT!!!! If you don't know, kinetics is all about body position and where to use what muscles for the best and easiest result without injury. And you're SO YOUNG! I'm a dancer of old, and kinetics means you can do more for longer if you know the right muscle group to use.

Thank you so much for this. Its so nice to find someone who talks who discusses the basics, but in a completely unpatronising way, and without talking about "hacks" or "cheats"

Thanks a lot! I never recognized that principle about how skewing the plane decreases the angle of attack and creates more tearout. Great stuff.

Thanks Matt. Great tip on what happens when you skew the plane. Your analogy of going up a mountain was perfect. Spot on. For me, it was eye opening. It adds so much for me in understanding woodworking better. I've been doing this stuff for so long (haphazardly) there is so much to learn and understand. Thanks again.

It’s just occurred to me Matt, I’ve been a Carpenter Joiner for over 40 years yet still look forward to watching your posts. I’ve been using hand planes for as long and all your pointers I subconsciously do on a day to day basis but crikey when I thought about the process while planing after this video it went slightly off cue...strange how our trade becomes an instinct and natural ability over time. Your ability exceeds your years young fella well done.

Among the how-to woodworking channels, this is definitely among the best. The volume of practical, applicable information and demonstration is impressive and extremely useful for both the beginner and intermediate woodworker. Even a long-time pro can learn a few things or refresh on the basics.

Best explanation of the effect of skewing the plane body I’ve come across-the Wixey gauge was perfect. Also, best illustration of the effect of waxing the plane bottom. Good job.

Matt, I've built 6 solid-body guitars over the last 12 months coming from no woodworking experience at all. But one thing that I've always really struggled with is jointing square glueing surfaces with hand planes and I was really struggling the other day with my 7th build (a neck-through) to get the the centre laminate square enough to glue the wings on. This video really helped me, 20 mins after watching it I had the perfect joints. Thanks for the great content.
