Fantastic idea 💡 for a planter thanks! Purely by accident I discovered that a birdbath surrounded by edgers helps prevent erosion. It effectively slows the water down and keeps it from rushing down the slope when it rains. One of the birdbaths had a chipped bowl but putting a ceramic pot with parrot beak plant in it completely covered the defect and added some tropical drama. 🦜🌿

Do you have only one speaker or earbud? When I listen with just my right earbud, I get exactly the sound levels you describe; when I listen with just my left, I hear Debra perfectly. Listen with both earbuds, and you'll get the complete sound. It's because the audio settings are in stereo rather than mono.

What happens over time is the rosettes grow from the centers and lower leaves dry and fall off, so stems lengthen, making it look looser. If there are any offsets, they'l appear along those exposed stems.

With so many plants, how long before the plants get root bound and it has to be changed?

What deconstructs this is plant growth, not root growth. There's plenty of soil. But in six months or so, echeverias tend to get leggy.

I didn't because these sort of planters dry out quickly here in Southern CA, and it's not exposed to excessive rainfall.

The basins are shallow and dry out quickly. But if heavy rains are predicted for several days, yes, it would be good to cover it.

Spray it lightly with a hose. Aim to keep the soil moist but not soggy. The container is so shallow, and the soil is basically sitting atop it, so unless this is exposed to excessive rain or irrigation, evaporation ought to take care of excess moisture.

The birdbath looked so shallow to me not 4 inches like you said. Were you saying it’s ideal to have it be 4 inches deep as opposed to the much shallower one you used?!

It tapers downward from edges to center, which is 4" deep.

Hi Bell -- It doesn't drain, and that's OK. I know it sounds like a contradiction: If succulent roots will rot when they sit in soupy soil, then a container HAS to drain, right? Actually, no. I have glass terrariums of succulents that have been fine for years. The key is to not overwater them. Remember, succulents are plants that store moisture in their leaves, so they can get by on minimal water. To answer your question, the birdbath is so shallow, and so much of the soil is above the basin, that in a dry climate, drainage is not a concern due to evaporation. The arrangement should be watered from the top, so water percolates downward, and of course not exposed to excessive rain.

@@lettyrodrz9940 The more uniform the plants, the greater the symmetry. But it comes down to what looks best to you. There's no wrong way to do it. You can get a really nice composition even with succulents of various sizes and types. The key is mounding the soil (don't plant flat).
