This is my way of planting a lemon tree in heavy/clay soil. Here in Southern California I have very clay soil that holds onto water for a long time. This is my way of creating the perfect environment for my plant's roots. Hope this helps you! Enjoy!

I was told by the citrus farm grower never put peat moss in ground heavy clay soil bc it will retain too much water At the bottom and will cause plant to die from root rot. Also you need to blend half native soil with your organic soil conditioner. Thank you for sharing .

Enjoyed the vid, in the UK we are advised to dig square holes rather than round holes, it supposed to encourage the routes to go into the soil rather than continuing to wrap around in the round hole.

Thanks for doing this AND being so funny! You guys are great. Was laughing for like 30 seconds. But very informative. Trying to plant a 3 year old potted Meyer Lemon into clay soil since it's roots actually grew out the bottom of the pot ...😳 I'll have to cut the root which will distress the tree. Also unfortunately have to break the pot since I somehow thought a lot with a smaller opening than the overall width of the pot would somehow not be a problem...lesson learned...

Hi, and thanks for your video, I live in regional Victoria, Australia, and while we have large areas of our state that grow citrus and fruit trees there's not a lot of local information online for novices like me who may want to transplant from pot to ground (Heavy Clay). Because like you guys we can suffer from whether extremities and with heavy clay it can become extremely dry or soggy wet.? I'll have a chat with our local nursery to discuss what equivalent products are that you recommended and no doubt we'll come up with some products that are suitable. Thank you again for your video, I had no problem with the audio, and enjoyed your passion. Well Done.!

I planted my very healthy green meyer's lemon tree just before the rain season with nice sandy soil in my heavy clay garden. I dug a really big hole probably 3X larger than the plant however when the rain came, the entire spot where I planted the small tree was soaked with water like a small pond and it took at least a week before the water appeared to be drained away from the surface. I think that the root has continued to be soaked while the water slowly drained away. The rain has hit 3 times so far which means it was soaked time after time and my plant now looks really sad with yellowing leaves. Should I dig out the plant and put it back in the pot? All my other plants seem to be doing well in this heavy clayed garden but this lemon tree isn't doing well.
@gregleach5833
@gregleach5833 3 года назад
If you have really hard clay and dig all that out and replace with lighter soil the hole will fill up like a pond and won’t be able to drain away due to clay on sides and bottom of hole . Your better off planting in your native soil with a small amount of amendments or make a slightly raised bed maybe 6 inches higher than native soil. Either make a wide sloped mound or use rock or edging border . It’s like planting your tree in a clay bowl if you do it the way you tried first and the water will sit in the whole until it very slowly drains out through the hard clay bottom and will kill your tree

@@gregleach5833 Thanks so Greg for the advice! I dug it out two weeks ago and put it back in the pot (hopefully saved it in time as it doesn't look dead but just a bit sad with half of the leave fell off). It maybe better if I leave it in the pot over spring/summer/fall let it revive a bit and then plant it back in the winter in the native soil with amendment as you suggest. OR do you think it is okay to plant it now in the garden? I am just afraid it is getting too many shocks.
@gregleach5833
@gregleach5833 3 года назад
Not a bad idea to leave it in the pot until it recovers . You can control the moisture easier in the pot . It should recover I’m sure and then you can plant it correctly. I hope your tree does great .

So much erroneous information in your short video. The worst mistake is amending a clay soil planting hole with porous material (potting mix, peat, coir, sand .....), which creates the 'bathtub effect' and encourages encircling/ girdling roots after a short period. The tree should also have been bare-rooted before transplanting to offer the planter an opportunity to correct problem roots (encircling, girdling, crossing, roots growing straight up, straight down, or back toward the center of the root mass).

@JB-uz2nw
@JB-uz2nw 3 года назад
@@justinplatt698 A few quick notes. 1. You can and should add compost to planting mix in clay soil. It helps loosen it over time. 2. You MUST mix 50/50 native soil (especially with clay) with new soil so roots will want to venture out to surrounding soil. Otherwise, you create an "earth pot" where roots only stay in the hole you dug. You will notice the effects after a few years. 3. Hole should be square. Round holes make for a root bound tree in clay soil. If the hole is square, roots are likely to push out and not just go around. Think of the "earth pot" from number 2 above. 4. While she said plant a little higher then surrounding, you need to plant that tree even higher than planted. It's already level and the soil is going to sink a good 2-6 inches. 5. Don't drive a stake through the rootball! Wait for roots to get established and form a straight trunk later with two wooden or metal posts that are off on each side of the tree. RU-vid is great but can be dangerous for those giving advise from other bad videos they've watched. Call your county extension office for better directions in your location. Nice lady, good video, bad instruction.

I left when you said you can't add compost to citrus 🤦 Any "hot" compost (compost with a large percentage of nutrients that haven't been broken down) will potentially destroy your plant's root system. But fully mature compost is not only safe, but gives you a major advantage when it comes to fruit production. Please don't share nonsense.

When I first started gardening I had a one sided view of how to plant, but after attending multiple classes by master gardeners and nurseries with special guests, every individual has their own method of doing it. I was on the side of adding compost for awhile until I decided to plant an avocado tree. I went through four avocado trees and they would all die on me, and I would ask, and ask but they would tell me that avocados just have poor root systems. Finally, I was searching online and saw one video that said the reason avocado trees die is because of the compost. So I followed his instructions and I finally had a 25' four year old avocado tree giving avocados. Moral of the story, it doesn't hurt to get ideas and try them out if your unsuccessful at growing a tree.
