I see this all the time. Unfortunately many people are uneducated in our industry. Also when these trees don't die at first they can go on down the line years later and develop a condition called stem girdling roots or SGR. This can eventually be fatal to the tree after the homeowner has invested many years into the tree at this point. You guys throw around the term "landscaper" too freely.

Highly recommend to remove the burlap and wire. I see lots of shrubs and tress dead and 90% of the time they still had the burlap and wire on it.

I absolutely loved this video. Probably one of my favorites. It was slower paced and packed with tons of information as I’ve never planted a tree yet I don’t think. So these basic tips and theories are super helpful and if was fun to see Keith in “learning mode” as well as the rest of us. That dump trailer is so nice. Is that the one you talked about in your audiobook first year in landscaping?

I plant pretty much exactly as Dan showed... There are so many people in the world that say you have to remove the cage and burlap. I do exactly what you did here except I slice the burlap in a few places. I either cut the top of the cage or bend it over, and untied the burlap and remove the rope making sure there are no large clumps of burlap. To me not disturbing the root ball trying to pull the burlap and cage off is more important. I see people pulverize the root ball just trying to get the burlap and cage off.

We usually use a shovel to move the tree left and right to get it straight so you don't run the risk of pulling on the tree stem and it breaking up the root ball

Pro tip on how to dump soil from wheelbarrow A) easiest and most efficient use a wooden ramp wheel the dirt right up into the trailer (use with single tire wheelbarrow ) Takes 20-30seconds B) have someone grab the other side of wheelbarrow and dump into trailer Sometimes have to dump sun dirt if too heavy (can even dump over side of don’t have room in back )

PSA: Something I see many people doing is planting the tree and leaving the tree in the burlap and wire. You saw how they worked at pulling the previous trees burlap and metal out, all that extra labor. Before you plant B&B it really does not hurt to completely remove the wire and burlap from the tree. You talk about letting the roots breathe, well there is a start. The burlap is still girdling the tree, I am aware it decomposes but it takes years for that to happen. So please remove the burlap and wire. Never have I left a tree in the burlap and metal, and I can assure you none of them have died.

We have planted well over 100 trees. Un tie or cut off the top of the burlap. No need to worry about the cages. Your sure not going to be lifting and removing one from a 8 ft spruce. Don’t plant too deep. And if you have to plant it a tad high just bend the cage down into your hole. Backfill, Stake it mulch it and enjoy. I love driving around my town and seeing all the trees Ive planted. Just wanted to tell how we plant. Maybe it will help someone. Ps make sure you tell um to water!

bhepp344 Yeah thats a big thing when customers come to us about a tree and you can see its dying, the majority of the time the number one reason for the sick or dying tree is bc it hasn’t been watered enough. We hand out watering schedules to our customers that is something we do to help the customer know when to water their tree.

An observation as i am currently debating getting a dump trailer. You shoveled dirt then had to shovel it into the dump trailer to dump it out. I shovel dirt then go up into trailer with wheel burrow and dump it in trailer then shovel it out at the dump. So really we both shoveled twice and dumped once. Is it even worth getting the dump trailer. 😜 Maybe not for dirt but yes for branches.

We always stake trees for their first year until they're rooted so wind and Ice won't cause it to lean and then it'll be crooked for life.

These trees get damaged a lot loading and unloading. The root ball gets slammed around and gives the tree no chance from the get go. Also I never mess with the cage, Id rather keep the root ball tight and safe. The only thing I do is take the rope off and fold the cage ears down

Is there any particular reason why you keep the burlap sack on the root ball? Where I live and work in California, almost no plants, even the larger trees ever come in a burlap sack. Its always either the black plastic cans or a wood box.

Its funny that you talk about how the roots need to grow in a "softer" soil. But you pack it down and then the roots are going to have a challenge growing through the dirt they just stepped on to pack. Best way to plant is to use organic compost. California. San diego. Miracosta College. Facts. Juss saying.

The loose soil in the planting hole was tamped down enough to support the trees stability. It wasn't packed down.

Yeah compost can be very good but perennial soils facts are more than just that and you still need good root to soil connection. Just dont over tamp and yeah, 90% of urban tree issues are from overly compacted soils lacking in organic matter.
