How to Plant an "Ice Cream" Banana Plant | ONE YEAR UPDATE and Machete Pruning "Blue Java" Banana

It's hard to believe how gigantic this "blue java" or sometimes called "Ice Cream" banana plant is, just one year after planting. In this one year update, I look at how this ice cream banana plant is doing, and show how to remove one of the many "pups" that have sprung up. These pups sometimes take compete with the main plant for nutrients, so it's important to limit the amount of pups. Here is a link to the well made Ontario Knives Machete I use amzn.to/2Z1ObxG

Some people wonder how to grow bananas in pots, but this video focuses on how to grow banana in the ground. We've chosen the blue java banana, and hope that these banana growing tips allow you to enjoy a well growing banana tree. As I found out just a year later, it's pretty easy to grow bananas. The banana plant is very vigorous grower. Approaching how to grow bananas is a bit different than growing other fruit trees, in that you cut down the main plant after it has fruited. It doesn't take anything special to grow banana tree at home. There isn't a lot of mystery in how to grow banana trees, and this ice cream banana has just boomed without a lot of intervention. I also walk through how to prune banana, and demonstrate pruning banana trees using the preferred tool, a machete. I use the ontario knife machete from ontario knife company. These machetes are developed for the US Army, and I've found it to be a well made tool. Healthy bananas lead to tasty bananas, lol! Growing bananas, like gardening, are a great idea for your back yard orchard, and make beautiful front yard fruit trees

I grow bananas in my Florida zone 9b garden. I have two ice cream banana clumps one from a plant I bought three years ago and one from a pup I severed and replanted. I have had two stalks of bananas from the original clump so far and they are delicious both fresh and dried. They ripen so fast that I bought a dehydrator to preserve the 90 % of them my wife and I can't eat right away. According to most banana websites you should have at most the mother plant and one pup growing for next year. I am doing that with most of my banana clumps but I let my original ice cream plant go for two years until it developed about fifteen large p stems. I had to cut most of them out so it would keep fruiting and that is a lot of work. I would attest that the best way to get lots of bananas is to keep it to one main stem and one pup for next year. If you want more than one cluster a year separate a pup and plant it elsewhere.

That info is really reassuring and tells me I need to get a bit more ruthless with these pups.

I planted a Dwarf Brazilian in Jan 2019. Grew to about 7 feet, and produced 3 new Pseudostems last year (I transplanted the smallest to a new location this Jan.). It's producing 6 more stems this year, and it flowered a couple weeks ago. I'm up to about 7 bunches of bananas on it so far with 6-8 bananas per bunch.

How soon before you gor pups from it? How soon before you got fruit? Mine is old, but i was traveling as a crisis responder during the pandemic, so it really didnt start growing until this year even tho the roots are older. Im wondering how soon I will get pups from mine.
@Fostenel
@Fostenel 2 года назад
@@baziowenz8231 Mine produced it first stems in the first year, and fruited on the second I believe. They like lots of nutrients and water, so make sure it's getting plenty of both. The one I transplanted produced new stems on the second year, and produced a flower at the start of the third. I think it spent it's entire first year just establishing a new root system since it came off the mother plant with very little corm.

I have a blue Java it can produce a lot of pups. When the pups get 6-8” I remove and transplant. Since bananas are unpredictable as to when they flower having many plots ensures a more even harvest. When the flower begins to pop out the top is when I stop cutting off the pups for the next generation of bananas from the clump my procedure and it seems to work

You have to split the Pups from the mother plant. You can share them with your friends. When you cut down a rack of bananas hang them from a strange upside down in your garage and lay something underneath just in case any juices flow off . The juice off the banana stock actually stained my lanai.

I'm new to planting bananas, but they've responded well for us. I think the biggest issue you'll face is the low temps. If you want to intervene on evenings where you have really cold temps with some sort of incandescent light or other means of stabilizing temps, it may work for you. I think the lack of moisture in the air contributes to temperature extremes, which will make it challenging (but I don't think impossible) for you to plant banana in the high desert.

I just bought a Ice Cream banana plant online. It's my first one and I was wondering since I live in Zone 8 in West Texas. Would it be okay to grow in ground?
@TheBusyGardener
@TheBusyGardener 6 месяцев назад
It's possible, but you're gonna likely need to take some actions to keep it from freezing. Wrap it with frost cloth, and string incandescent Christmas lights in it. Where you plant it in your yard makes a difference too. Try to plant by things that are a thermal mass, like a water tank, or cement wall which absorb heat during the day and provide a little warmth as it bleeds off
