You'll learn every aspect of planting asparagus from the (under)ground up. Jessica Robertson of Backbone Valley Nursery in Central Texas walks you through every step from digging depth to soil prep to the most important step, patience.
Should have addressed those of us who live in the northern climate also, where leaving the crown exposed or covered just a little is not an option to us up here in the northern regions. ... 🙄
Next time do a close up shot of your product. Love your information-one of the best I've seen on asparagus. Such a strange little plant. Going to plant more. Mine are about 3 years old.
Although I need a layer of wood ashes in the bottom of an 18" trench to get the pH and mineral availability up, and I'd have to plant on 12" of compost and soil put back in to get my 6" depth, I'd also enjoy avoiding most of the weeding and fertilising chores by using shredded Red Alder ramial wood, the most stellar mulch I can make here. The research on (bois raméal fragmenté) especially small/young hardwood branches shredded while green, even leaves and all, is getting to be legendary and the method is taught in Canadian university. I think it would be perfect for mulching Asparagus as it is for many other crops.
Greetings from Puerto Rico, I just got to see your video today because I was looking for information about how to plant asparagus. I have two questions, first, what kind of mycorrhizal fungi are you using? Second, what would happen if I plant 20 crowns in an 8' by 32" bed? I ask because I just bought 20 crowns and the space I have is 8 feet long by 33 inches wide.
Excellent - to the point. My asparagus patch is over 20 years old - going strong. Asparagus is the queen of the vegetables. I begin harvest here in Ohio about tax day (April 15) depending on the weather, while most are just beginning to plant.
Is that 18 inches on center? Meaning, is the 18 inch measurement from the top/middle of each crown? Or does there have to be 18 inches of unused dirt between each full plant (tips of the roots from tips of the roots)?
Your cat doesnt poop in your garden beds? Whole bunch of stray cats poop on my property and in my garden beds. I never had a cat. Are they all like this or is it possible to potty train them not to poo in your yard?
Thanks for the video. I tried growing asparagus a few times in the past, but I just planted it like I would a tomato plant and it never worked. I just got inside from digging two 8-foot trenches, so the worst part is over. :)
Got to wait wen u let the bugga grow for 2 yrs, now good time to cut back da fern, next yr should get seeds if you let em grow the fern, if waihines it will seed.
