This video is full of helpful information, but that doesn’t make up for my big WHOOPS! My camera was being repaired, and I struggled to hold my cell phone steady without a tripod. My sincere apologies for the shaky and blurry parts. I thought about filming again, but that would have been a horrible thing to do to the plants! I hope you forgive me on this one! Now, the content. Dicentra formosa (aka bleeding heart) is a great shade plant with ferny foliage and long-lasting flowers. It’s a Pacific Northwest native plant that loves dry shade and survives in USDA zones 3 to 9. The foliage will die back in the heat of summer (unless it’s in deep shade), but don’t worry because it will come back the following year. I like to underplant with violets and sweet woodruff for a pink, purple, and white combo. This cultivar, called “Luxuriant” is one of the best because of its vigor and size. The flowers are deep pink, and the foliage has a slight blue cast. Other cultivars have bluer foliage, but I keep coming back to this garden staple. They are tough, but you still need to plant them correctly and establish them the first year. After that, they can survive on their own. Here in the Pacific Northwest, zone 8, they can be planted about one inch deep, but remember to plant deeper if you’re in a colder area. I was really impressed with the quality of the bare-root plants from Costco, supplied by Longfield Gardens. These dicentra were really healthy. I hope they continue to grow them for Costco because the price was excellent, about $12 for five plants.
