How To Plant Dahlias In Containers 2022, Growing Dahlias in Pots, Get Gardening
Having taken on an allotment plot, my original thought was that I would just grow Dahlia over there in what would be a bed for cut flowers. I then changed my mind and decided to grow 1 of each variety at home, again, but in containers as I did last year.
Last year, 2021, I only grew a couple of Dahlia in containers, varieties 'Edinburgh' and 'Babette', but they did do very well and provided flower colour throughout summer and into mid/late autumn.
This year I'm growing a lot mare varieties, Ball, Cactus and large Decorative types. Whilst I expect the workload to be greater I'm also hoping that by using a different planting mix to 2021 the plants should produce better flowers, with the soil mix better able to allow the plants to thrive.
The compost mix that I have made is to use 2 bags of ‪@WestlandHorticulture‬ Gardeners Choice multi-purpose 60ltr combined with 1 bag of Westland John Innes number 2 which is a loam based product.
Both the compost and John Innes (J.I) have fertiliser content that should last for 5 weeks. Beyond that time then additional feeds will need to be added.
The Dahlia varieties that I'm growing are:
Ryecroft Daves Choice,
Bantling,
Boom Boom Red,
Bishop Of York,
Babette,
Hy Pimento,
Edinburgh,
Winholme Diane,
Rocco,
Marys Jomanda,
Westerton Harry,
Oakwood Goldcrest,
White Alves,
Shirwell Peach,
Almand Climax

Glad you liked the video. Definitely worth growing some as they provide great colour throughout the summer.

You have so much lawn in your back yard ! I have taken out about 80 % of my lawn for dahlia growing . This summer it is going to be amazing. I have over 45 in pots ready to go !! I never buy compost I make my own !

Many thanks for the message. If you have cleared that much lawn already then why do you not grow directly into the ground, or is the ground no good where you are. 45 pots of Dahlias sounds amazing. Do you grow specific types of Dahlia or just a good mix of colours and sizes?

@@diyhomeandgardening Love the Bishop Dahlias but they do not survive the winter so I must store them . The other types can survive the winter with a triple mulching even when the soil is frozen solid . I love anything red , orange , purple .....in all flower types . Once saw a 2 meter yellow cactus 😏 I am addicted to DAHLIA !

@@dinkohrvat344 The Bishop series of Dahlia are classed as being almost hardy in the U.K., u less it’s a cold wet winter like we just had. All other types need to be lifted and stored to ensure they survive. I have planted a Dahlia imperialis this year. Hopefully it will flower but who knows, they need lots of sun and protection from cooler winds. Enjoy your addiction 😄🌼

@@fabienlamour3644 If you are planting in containers then just be sure to give them plenty of feed once they start to produce flower buds. I only water mine twice a week, giving them a good soak on each occasion. If you have other questions then feel free to message me either here or via instagram, under the same name. 🌸

Great video Ian. Roughly how many leaves did you bury under the compost? I always thought you should never bury them as they rot etc so I’ve usually left mine above but I’ve got to say yours do look a lot better and more sturdy.
@diyhomeandgardening
@diyhomeandgardening 2 года назад
Thanks for watching and your message. It’s probably 2 sets of leaves but so long as it’s 6-8” below surface that’s fine. Don’t over water and the stems won’t ever rot.

This has been a great help. How many inches are your pots for final planting, please? Im growing dwarfs/patio for the first time, but I'm a bit unsure on the size of the container for final planting and how many dahlias per container. I see you have one per pot, but is this because they are a taller variety? I should also add that some have been grown from seed not tuber.

Hi Kerry. The Dahlia in this video all grow to about 3 feet i height. For patio types I am using 30cm (12 inch) height and width containers. I’m growing Dracula and Pretty Woman as my patio types, planting about 4 inches below the surface. I only plant 1 plant to a container and then pinch the stems once they are around 6 inches in height. For normal Dahlia types then plant about 6 inches below ground level to ensure good stem development. Hope this helps you 🌻🪴

Love the video, will the smaller dwarf dahlia varieties grow in planters 20cm deep? I bought some long planters that were meant to be 30cm deep but the depth inside isn’t, it’s only 20cm. I really wanted to use them but not sure I can now, would they be deep enough or would you not recommend it? I haven’t grown dahlias before so I don’t want to plant them for them to struggle if these aren’t suitable. Thanks 😊

Hi Natasha, Many thanks for watching and for your question. The first question is what type of Dahlia are you growing. If they are more Dahlietta type then the more shallow container would be fine. If they are what I would call a regular Dahlia then you will need the extra depth so you can plant the tubers down to correct depth. Planting the tubers 4-6 inches down will give you a much better plant that produces more stems and flowers. Hope this helps, kind of. How about plant some herbs, alpines or bedding plants in your more shallow pots. Enjoy your gardening weekend 🌸

If you look in my description I included the types of potting medium used. I used a multi-purpose compost mixed with a loam. 2 bags of multi-purpose to 1 bag of loam soil. All the best 🪴

Hi Lorrie, Thanks for the message. This video was done in May with the U.K. being zone 8. I have already moved a few of my Dahlias out, this year, as run out of space inside the greenhouse. Hope this helps you. 🌸

What size for the pot?
@diyhomeandgardening
@diyhomeandgardening Год назад
Hi. Thanks for watching and your message. I used pots that were 40cm in height and 40cm in width. They are plastic pots to make moving them lighter, and they are also cheaper than stone or terracotta of similar size. Hope that helps you. Enjoy your Dahlia growing 🌼

Wouldn't the leaves that are under the surface rot? Is that not a concern?
@diyhomeandgardening
@diyhomeandgardening 2 года назад
Hi Alex. Thanks for watching and the question. The leaves will break down but don’t cause any issues. As the leaves are below ground they don’t rot in the same way as if you cut them and left them out. It’s actually better to keep the leaves on than to make open cuts and bury the stems, which could allow infections in. Enjoy your planting.
