Jeff demonstrates in this video how to plant dwarf, ground cover oriental Lily bulbs into a pot for a great summer display.
Lilies are one of the most popular bulbs around. Their flowers are large and fragrant with a vast range of vivid colours to choose from, often with interesting markings. Oriental Lilies in particular are highly fragrant and have been developed for their huge flowers. There are many impressive and unusual Oriental varieties to choose from.
Our dwarf Orientals are great for stunning giant Lilies which are more compact. Bulbs produce an abundance of striking colourful flowers on short stems perfect for pots, borders or even rockeries. Their shorter stems make them far less vulnerable to wind damage. Below you will find our great selection of these ground cover Oriental Lilies.
The UK's leading mail order plant and bulb supplier J. Parker's are in collaboration with regional personality Jeff Turner of Granada's gardener's Question Time North West to offer our customers great practical advice alongside our top quality products.

Hi there, you can grow bulbs in the tropics. The secret is to keep bulbs in the fridge before planting - for about 6 weeks. You can keep them up to 8 weeks, but no longer than 12. They stress if they're chilled for too long. Now that the bulbs have been through a nice cold winter, they're ready to be planted out. Treat bulbs in the tropics like you would annuals - they'll rot during the wet season, so you need to buy them fresh every year. Planting in pots rather than planting them in the ground will keep them out of the rain and you can bring them inside when they're flowering. Make up some good quality, free-draining potting mix and add compost and manure to give the bulbs a boost. Mulch well to keep the bulbs as cool as possible. Hope this helps and thank you for watching! :)

@@JParkersBulbs thanks for ur fast response.. Another question.. When its finish blooming what should i do.. How many cm i should cut the stem from the top of pot?? What should i do next.. Should i still keep the last stem on the pot until all leaves dry and then dig the bulb.. If yes so what should i do to the bulb...keep in on fridge for 8 weeks and then can i replant again?

For saving for the next year, you can cut the stems after they turn brown after flowering. Then clean the bulbs and remove any root stems. Wash with water and let them dry in the shade. Then put them in wet peat moss in a fridge until September and then you can plant them again.

Great video, thanks. When did you transfer the lilies from the pot into the ground? Can you plant bulbs direct into the border or do they need to be started in a flowerpot?

Thank you! Keep potted lilies indoors until all danger of frost has passed. Keep it in a cool place with partial sun, snipping off the flowers once they fade. About a week before you plant the lilies outdoors, start letting it sit outsit for longer periods each day. This is called "hardening off," a necessary step for plants that have lived their entire lives in indoor warmth, and yes you can plant oriental lilies straight out in to your garden.

What if you live in a climate where The winters are 50 degrees F (10 degrees C) no snow and rain. And in summer It is 80 or 90 degrees F (32.2 degrees c or 27.6 C).And no rain and humid summer

Hi Alex, for warm climates, provide oriental lilies with dappled sunlight in hot summers. Shade the roots with 2 or 3 inches of mulch (shredded leaves or bark) to keep the roots cool and help the lilies grow. During hot summers, two or three waterings per week may be necessary to keep the soil slightly moist so the roots don't dry out. During the winter, water lily bulbs once or twice a month and always water lilies near the base of the plants. Fertilise once a month using a low nitrogen fertiliser in late winter or early spring to encourage blooms. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
