Couldn't you just use a bulb planter?
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 2 года назад
Yes, absolutely. You could use a bulb planter and put several crocuses in each hole. However, I have never found a bulb planter that works works well and always end up planting tulips, for example, by digging holes with a trowel. Digging lots of holes in the lawn with a trowel is far more work than lifting flaps like I did. Thanks for watching and have a great Halloween.

I put some crocus and snowdrops in my front lawn this year too! Edit: My husband and I are not diligent about mowing the lawn and the front lawn has looked a bit ragged ever since we moved in a couple years ago. That lawn is exactly the reason I wanted the spring flowers there! :D

A lot of hard work but it will be so worth it next spring. Excellent point about not aerating a lawn underplanted with crocus bulbs!

I am a crocus lover and have them planted in my front lawn and don't allow my husband to start mowing for the year until the leaves are withered away. I also have a large crocus my mother grew and photographed for me tattooed on my arm as part of a half sleeve that is photo realistic color and made up of only photos of flowers from either my garden or my mother's. It isn't finished yet but it is coming along well. 4-5 hours per flower and I have 8 flowers takes a while.

Wow, your tattoo is a real labour of love. It will be something incredibly intricate and personal by the time it is finished. That's a lot of pain though! Take care.

Can't wait to see them this coming Spring! Love this idea and tried to do something similar here with grape hydrangea and rain lilies in my lawn. It looks like you've finally gotten rain! Yay! Such a big difference in the soil from the Himalayan Lily video. 🌱
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 2 года назад
Do you mean grape hyacinths? I bet these would do well through a lawn as they are very robust. Must look it up. Yes, we finally got rain. Hallelujah! Rain lilies in the lawn! Wow, I am jealous 😊
@laurieparis2203
@laurieparis2203 2 года назад
@@GardeningatDouentza Rachel, yes! You're right, it must have either been an Android autocorrect malfunction or a brain malfunction, I'm betting on the latter! 😊Grape hyacinth is correct! I had a neighbor who kindly cared for my lawn while my hand was healing, unfortunately he weed whacked all the GH bulbs, thinking they were weeds. And the rain lilies did not survive the week of freezing snow we had this February. Well there's always the next 30+ years to try again! 😊

Crocus are one of my favorite spring flowering bulbs. I actually like their strappy foliage. Sadly, I now live in a climate that's hostile to most spring flowering bulbs as they don't get sufficient rest...

You can put bulb uppside down and he will grow , he will maybee have more difficulty but he will, one day he will appear, even if it is the next year. With this method put the tip up, but if youre only digging hole it can be more complicated, so just try to put right way but its not so bad.
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 3 месяца назад
Okay, thank you. Good to know. I know with tulip bulbs you can delay flowering by laying them on their side. Hopefully all my crocus are the right way up for the soonest flowering possible.

I didn't use that H technique, just plopped the whole sod out. Would love a crocus lawn, but I have huge pine trees in the area where they'd get most sun early spring. The grass barely grows under pines, could be a video for you in the future, that is, what to plant under pines, if you can at all.
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 2 года назад
Coniferous trees are difficult. I will bear your video suggestion in mind. Thank you. Yeah, I can understand why you might pop the whole sod out but I think the grass fits back more neatly when one side of it is still joined. Fingers crossed for spring and have a happy halloween

This has got me thinking that as crocuses dont mind quite low soil fertility, some below a wildflower meadow area would be good too, crocuses providing interest before the wildflowers such as clovers, yellow rattle and birds foot trefoil bloom in the summer! The autumn crocuses you have look great, even when they were closed on dull days.
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 2 года назад
I think crocuses should work really well in that situation. Having spring crocuses in flower before the wildflowers of summer is a similar game plan to what many people have in their borders with tulips flowering in spring, followed by summer perennials. Smart thinking!

Hello from Alabama US! How will crocuses do where there’s a spot of weeds? I have a lovely deciduous tree that would be the perfect spot for them if not for a patch of weeds around it. Thank you for your beautiful explanation!
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 3 месяца назад
I am not sure how your crocuses will do in weeds. It depends on how vigorous the weeds are.

Do you have to plant under a tree? We have a section of lawn with very little grass.There is a layer of top soil, but our ground is very sandy, actually it is all sand. Would crocuses survive in that type of setting. We are in U.S. zone 4a. We planted a lilac tree 40 years ago and planted crocuses to one side of it. After two years they quit coming up. But, a year ago this past spring three all of a sudden showed themselves. We were in awe over that. This last spring they didn't. Oh well lol. Enjoyed as always, take care!
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 2 года назад
Crocus tommasinianus likes a gritty, poor to moderately fertile soil. I am not sure it would tolerate pure sand but you say you have a layer of top soil. My best advice would be to plant a handful of crocuses and see how they do! You don't have to plant under a deciduous tree. This is generally recommended as deciduous trees give rise to the areas of poor soil that crocuses love. Hope this helps.

So do all Crocus types come from a bulb.? I just brought some crocuses off Amazon and I received a little baggy of tiny black seeds. Just wondering if they were some weird rare variety or if the seller is trying to pull a fast one on me.
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza Год назад
Hi there. Bulbs grow from seeds. You need to grow the seeds until they're big enough to produce bulbs. It takes a bit longer than if you had been sent bulbs.

I have seen some autumn-flowering crocus planted in lawn. It does mean, however, that you can't mow from late summer so it mightn't suit every garden.
