Somehow I missed this one even though I’ve been watching you for years.

I just moved and the soil is really sandy. The info you gave will help me in my plantings and in amending the soil. Thank you.

Thank you Jim for acknowledging that peat is not a renewable resource. Its extraction destroys wetlands. Thank you for suggesting alternatives.

Thank you so much for such detailed tutorials. For a beginner taking up gardening and simply growing things to make my yard look better, you answer all my questions and in order! I feel more confident after watching your videos in experimenting a little. And thanks for the invaluable tip about letting plants dry between waterings to expand roots. Thank you!! Those fibreglass handles will be with us all for a very long time - like for thousands of years.

Today I did a jar test. My back yard soil is 50% sand, and 50% clay it is mostly crabgrass. My evergreens do well but that's about it. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. You have a great channel!

Thank you for this video. I know it’s a little old but I moved to the coastal NC area and the soil in my yard is compacted weedy and sandy! I needed this helpful info.

I so wish I had found this before I transplanted 10 mature ones last month, that a lady did not want anymore because she wants a tropical looking garden. Looks like I need to dig them up, mound them and add moo poo to the sand. They are not doing too well, as I watered them daily, and may have some fungus, or root rot now, watching closely, trying to evaluate by finding knowledge on the internet... I am grateful to you for sharing your knowledge. Thank you oodles!

Watering daily might be a big part of the problem. (not knowing specifics of your situation)

nice detail. I have very sandy soil at my farm and I would auger 2.5 to 3 feet deep to mix in manure and compost when planting fruit trees. My sandy soil is very unhealthy (I bought from an owner who had a tenant farmer who didn't do cover crops or add much back to the soil) - so I have to amend the soil alot for my fruit trees to do well. 1st 6 inches or so is a decent brown top soil, underneath is an orangey beach type soil. Easy to work with, drains well, but not healthy.

Sweet. The ground around the house we bought was reported by old timers to have once been an orange grove, so the soil is a sandy sort. I've had a hard time getting pretty plants to grow around the house. This is so helpful. Your pretty good at that! TY!

This was very helpful to me. I move from Co to NC and hadn't a clue how to plant it the extremely sandy soil here. Your video helped me to feel better about planting and I really appreciate it!

Thanks for your information. I'm in England on very Sandy soil. We are experiencing droughts now in the summer months but heavy rain in the winter. I'm just wondering due to the drought conditions and with Sandy soil being so free draining what are other people's thought on planting shrubs lower than the existing soil level and leaving a trench around the trunk? This way any summer rain would drain into the trench thus the shrub could utilise all available rain water. Appreciate standing water around the trunk could potentially rot a juvenile shrub . We are experiencing very heavy rain most days at the moment but water is draining freely. I do mulch every year with well rotted manure I pull this away from trunks but it does eventually create a trench anyway. It's impossible to grow anything here without plenty of well rotted manure, I also out semi rotted paper into the hole. Thanks again for the time you take.

We use a mulching mower when cutting grass and just mulch our leaves right in. We don't rake them up at all. They are free fertilizer for your soil.

If you've already planted your shrubs, then what do you do? Just put a crap ton of shredded bark mulch on the surrounding soil?

Like the fiberglass handle advice, only recently started purchasing those but wood handles have limited life span even with some treatment I found and replacing handle not usually worth it.

Is it ok to use potting mix to grow soursop plants in the house ? Which is the best soil for soursop plants and how often do you change the soil? If you can answer I would appreciate it as I'm still a bit confused thanks ?

Hi Jim - great video, thanks for all of the helpful advice! One question for you, would using small rocks as mulch be as effective as pine straw or wood mulch chips? I like the look of rocks better but wonder if there is any downside to using this instead?

Peat Moss and Potting Soil are similar water absorbers.

Hi Jim love your videos and so much information for someone new to NC zone 7. My question on your web site it says you are closing down does this mean you will no longer be open for business or what? If so where will you be and will you be selling many of the products you talk about on this youtube site? So much help and information keep it up. I need lot of help in setting up my foundation because I have different summer sun than winter sun in the front of my house.

I live in Tampa Florida and have recently become interested in planting around my yard. I know just about nothing and am educating myself as much as possible because I've found it to be such a satisfying past time. I just purchased a bare root hybrid tea rose shrub and planted it today and am terrified because I used Kellogg's potting mix to mix with our sandy soil. Should I dig it up and start all over? Am I going to end up waisting this rose because I used the wrong amendment?

I have a question. Do we have to take such care of these plants because they're non native and they need help? How are native plants fine growing wherever they can without human intervention?

Instead of Peat Moss you can use Coco coir which is a renewable resource and has all the benefits of Peat Moss
@JimPutnam

I agree about the peat moss obviously being nonrenewable, but the shipping of coconut husk all over the world is not real environmentalism.

This is interesting: "Is peat moss harvesting sustainable? Peat Moss is . Peat Moss grows more than 60 times faster than it is harvested. Canada has more than 281 million acres of peatlands (25% of the world's supply). Harvested peat moss improves plant and soil health wherever applied.

Fiberglass handles are terrible as they age. They will start to break down and get splinters in your hand. I will never buy another one.
