I share how I plant onion sets for a big harvest in my Mittleider backyard vegetable garden. If you love big, juicy, sweet onions like we do being able to plant them, see them grow and pick a fresh one anytime is a great experience. Onions need lots of direct sunshine and soil that drains well. I planted 1015Y and Candy onions early to get bigger bulbs. I also share some gardening tools that really help make the process go faster and easier.

One idea for a few of your extra onions. Plant some in your front flower beds among your other flowers. They are supposed to deter critters, and they have gorgeous blooms (from which you could collect seeds or decorate the kitchen table). Plus it is fun to show people that even food can look pretty in the front, too!

This is a fantastic idea for a grow box. I’ve recently been told by the manufacturer of a plastic sheeting I’m using on my greenhouse that it can’t be used over PVC pipes/hoops as they contain a chlorine that leaches into the plastic causing it to break down prematurely. I think I’ll take this idea and bend some conduit to make mine! My mouth and eyes are already watering thinking of those onions.

I grew a few from seeds this year.. nothing major but this year coming up I plan on ordering these onion sets and doing them in a large bed. This is a great idea. thanks

I never made a garden in my life, but I think you've convinced me. It is 25 degrees right now, so I might have to wait a little while.

My method for planting onions. Stick my finger in the ground about an inch or so deep for green onions and about 4 inches for dry onions. Then stick the little buggers in the ground, cover with soil and pack it down. Works great every time.

I hope you give us an update when you harvest your onions. Also, on your garden marking tool, you can add more pegs at 4" intervals on one of the unused sides of the marker to help you next year.

I love my Mantis, it's 12 yrs old, last spring I finally had to have it overhauled completely. Mainly my fault cause I never emptied the gas out cause I never used it all each spring. Best investment I made. At 68 yrs I don't need a hugh big one, use it all over the flower beds and yard.12 degrees and ice storm here MI, ice just fell off trees took a whole week, some people still without power, over a week. HAPPY NEW YEAR sorry great video LOL

I did damage the tiller this year. It cost me $12 in parts to fix it myself. I was really happy. I think it is light enough that most anyone can use it but heavy enough to get the job done. Twelve degrees, yikes! That is cold. I hope you keep warm and safe.

Thanks LDS. Great Video. I was wanting to see how you planted yours. I think the problem I have been having is I am planting them way to deep. I will put them closer to the surface when I plant in the spring and see what happens.

alphasxsignal I got one free 16 years ago because it 'didn't work'. Had it running in ten minutes and used it for years. I'd still have it if my dad hadn't thought it was broken and scrapped it while I was in boot camp.

the white plastic water pipe will break down and crack from the sun. better to electrical plastic or better the metal conduit. I have also heard the both the gray and white plastic pipe will off gas into the greenhouse plastic, so even though it is easier to work with plastic, the metal will last the longest. best, nice work, john

It's good to see your fertilizer doesn't dissolve when "watered in" either. I thought I was doing something wrong. How long does your fertilizer stay visible on top of the bed like that? I was thinking about pre-dissolving it in water and delivering the nutrients that way. Think that'd work?

When you mention the Mittleider Gardening information. What information does it entail? Is it only about building the beds, or does it cover soil types, draining, irrigation, watering, shelter, etc?

Question, it looks like the tip on all your onions have been snipped off. Is that how they come or is that something you do and if so, why?

That is a lot of onions, how do you store them? Those sets sure do look good!

Quick question:When you planted these seedlings, did you trim or top them. it looks like you did.. Also I've read some folks top them in intervals to keep the growth going towards the Bulb and root system.. Do you do this as well?
@alphasxsignal

Seems like that is close for large onions like Candy and sweet onions.

So you have to put straight nitrogen on the onions along with the other Mittleider fertilizers?

Great video! My dad has a bcs tiller like yours. Not a mantis. It looks the same. I've used it before and I think it could use a little weight. It bounces around a lot up here in pa soil. Does yours do that same thing down where you live? Just curious why don't you have the raised bed built up so you don't have to do so much bending over?
@LDSPrepper
@LDSPrepper 10 лет назад
For me using this little tiller in the sand/sawdust soil is perfect. I can see if you had a much larger garden or one with heavy soil you would want one with a little more weight. I guess I could tie a brick or two onto it if I need the weight. :) I really like the height of my 8" deep boxes. I have not noticed any problem with bending over since it so low maintenance I don't do much bending. When I planted the onions I did use a 3 gallon bucket to sit on but that is really the only time I do that.
@Lanninglongarmmowing
@Lanninglongarmmowing 10 лет назад
lol. I thought of strapping a few bricks to the front of the tiller too. Haha. I was just thinking, I know we need to pull some weeds after a good hard rain and I think for us having them higher would be best. Our raised beds are 4'X8'. We all like different things I guess. You probably have less weeds than we do. lol.

Where did you get that plastic that you used to cover your onions? What mil is it? The plastic that you used looks very clear as compared to the other plastic sheets I have seen which appear to be more of a frosted color.

I thought onions preferred unfertilised soil? Maybe I'm thinking of beetroot?

I planted a white onion but recently we have had a lot of rain I had went to weed the garden and accidently pulled an onion out. I noticed the bulb seemed soggy is this normal or is it bc of the extra rain
