I absolutely love the tips I get here. I learn so much. Just a side note for those of us who don't have a fence in the North, Raccoons love eggs. They came and dug up all of my tomatoes when I used eggs to fertilize. I have been able to save many of them. Just part of the journey, but thought i'd share. I live in Arizona, here we have a DRY HEAT. It’s very important to us hahaha. Anyway, I’m in a gardening group for Arizona and it is suggested that we actually let our tomatoes bush up. There WILL be airflow no matter how bushy the plant gets because it’s so dry heat, but there might not be shade. Our 110+ degree summers can be way too much for tomatoes and the extra foliage is very helpful.

I'm a first time gardener, and this year, I have my first raised bed garden. I started all of my plants from seed, and my little tomato seedlings were really struggling. I thought this summer would be a failure, but then I remembered this video. I dug up my tomato plants, made the hole deeper, put the egg in, cracked it, and planted the entire stem of the plants. WOW!!! I started noticing a difference within a week. Now they are growing so fast, and strong. I wish I had thought to take pictures each day to document the improvement. It was amazing! I'll never plant without the egg again. Thank you for all the videos you share with us. Your videos, especially your devotionals, have helped me through some pretty rough times.

I have not grown many tomatoes because I could not eat them without a lot of stomach pain, I learned a couple of years ago it was not tomatoes but the chemicals sprayed on them, even some of the organic ones... I think it was for a longer shelf life. But if I grow them I can eat them! So I really value learning about the egg in the soil! Thanks Jess!

I save my eggshells, wash them and let them dry completely. When they are dry I zap them in my nutrimix and store them in a jar. This can be sprinkled into the bottom of your planting hole before putting the tomatoes in.

Didn't you wash them after you bought them? Most produce doesn't have as many chemicals as one may think. Maybe your illnesses were from all the people that touched your vegetables from the field to the store customers. I grow my own because of the flavor a d of an pick them when they are ripe whereas they get shipped to store while they are green

@@zaviahopethomas-woundedsou9848 Exactly, people end up with different reactions, one person will get stomach pains from commercial chemical like glyphosate, and others get skin rashes or even cancer. Besides, true vine ripened varieties taste better as they are grown for flavour, not their ability to look nice at the supermarket.

@@sandyburba3033 banana peels are high in potassium. As the peel decomposes, the tomato uses the potassium for protein synthesis and to add to the overall health of the plant. Egg shells are high in calcium which will be important for preventing blossom-end rot.

You are right that all those little nodes are potential roots and the more you can get in contact with the soil the better for the plant. I was impressed that you mentioned the advantage of laying the plant in sideway. Not many folks do that but I do. The advantage of being in sideways is the roots are near the surface where it is warmer in the spring then the roots go in deeper as they find they need to reach the ideal place to be. Excellent information. I'm going to try your egg method and avoid the traumatic experience by cracking the eggs.

The eggshell gives calcium to the plants. Epsom salt is good to put in the holes while planting also. So I save my eggshells & crush them up & put plenty in the hole when I plant tomatoes. I honestly never thought of planting the entire egg. I may have to try that.

The reasoning behind the egg itself is the egg shells because they contain 93% calcium carbonate and 1% nitrogen, along with other nutrients needed for the soil. Many plants take calcium from the earth during its growth process. Although it is not really a nutrient that they lack that usually afflict the plants, but the main problem is that many times it comes manifested in a disease known as apical rot. Peppers, tomatoes or aubergines are some of the plants susceptible to apical rot caused by calcium deficiency. And of course we will end up with very healthy plants. Thank you for your tutorial they are excellent. Thank you for sharing as well with the rest of the world your knowledge.

I add eggshells to my worm bin. I read that egg shells help prevent blossom end rot. My guess is the calcium. I wonder if there's a specific advantage to using the whole egg. Those of us without chickens of our own don't necessarily have the budget for buying eggs just for our tomato plants 😬 but I will hang onto a bunch of shells and add them directly to the tomatoes this year. Also, are you familiar with the garden uses for aspirin? Aside from as a rooting hormone, it seems to be used to combat mold/fungus. I'm looking into it because it tends to be either hot and dry, or cold and damp here for weeks at a time and it's hard to predict which, but both are pretty challenging.

Great video. The reason for the egg is that the calcium in the shell prevents blossom end rot and generally tomatoes need extra calcium. It also seems to help prevent blight ....SO ....All you need to do is save your egg shells all winter and throw several in each hole. I bet if you do a test you will find that you can get the same results and eat the egg.

I feel like we are related. I've only been following for a couple of months but I feel so connected. I love your honesty and your energy. I've been gardening all my life. All my family gardens at different levels. I started with grandparents because they were all in the country but we lived in the city. We spent our weekends helping in the gardens in the country. We used to get really hot at one of my grandparents houses and we would go swim in the river to cool down. That was in Michigan. Now for the past 15 years we've been in Tennessee. My daddy was my garden inspiration. He passed in July. We used to have long conversations on the phone about gardening. Last year, when my daddy was not well, I went back and forth to Michigan several times and he looked so forward to me bringing my different harvests. The last one I brought him was my long beans. He ate them raw. He had never seen those before. I cherish those times. Thank you for making your vlogs so personal. It's my favorite. My grandpeeps love it too! We have alot in common although I'm a bit older. Thank you for being REAL. You and your family are so sweet.😍😍😍

I love your dress. I had no idea of planting tomatoes deep. I thought they normally liked the roots to be close to the top of the dirt because they like the warmth of the sun. And I've already planted mine. Darn. Your tips are invaluable!!! I use epsom salts and sugar with each plant.

Never heard of the egg trick before, will try it this season. I have buried fish heads & scraps buried deep to prevent animals digging them up. The results are unbelievable. Since I haven’t been fishing lately I’m hoping the eggs work just as well

I just purchased 4 different tomato plants to try this year: green zebra, dancing with smurfs, bradywine & rainbow blend. I believe they are all indeterminate. I live in zone 6b in Nova Scotia Canada... are you familiar with these varieties and any tips on these ones in particular? I'll be growing them in either pots or bags as I have no space for an in ground garden. Thanks a bunch 🙏🏼

I love the green zebra. Tastes great. Small plant even though indeterminate and yield not great but my favorite. Doesn't need a lot of room. The various beefsteak are large plants and need much more room. Adjust the distance between plants based on the variety. A standard distance between different varieties doesn't work very well. Do your research

New Subscriber.. In Stilesville Indiana we let our Tomatoes bush & plant them 3ft appart. We have a bumper crops every year. Our climate is different than yours.. My favorite is an older variety...Rutgers they are full of juice & flavor.. I can them they are seedy.. We have had a garden for 38 years. Our garden was MASSIVE the first 10 years 120ft by 60ft..We do not do permaculture. Tried It..It doesn't work here. Just grows weeds. Would like raised beds.Thank you for giving advice on planting.. GOD'S BLESSING

Julie Wallace true. I lived in Northwest Indiana, in Hebron up by Valparaiso Indiana. I miss the beautiful soil and being able to just drop one seed and it exploding in gorgeous healthy growth. it's because of the snow, it replaces the nitrogen every year that has been leached from the soil not to mention the constant composting of leaves every fall and also the fact that all of that land in that part of the country was all marsh actually hundreds of years ago. I moved back home to Texas, up in Shiner tx, home of shiner beers. I guess im an hour north of Victoria tx. anyway I can tell you it is horrible trying to grow anything here now unless you're going part shade for the afternoon or something.

Kiddie pool: growing strawberries in mine. Took two heavy duty dog pools I purchased for our dogs last year, turns out they prefer playing in their outside water container not the expensive heavy duty swimming pools I bought for them so am making lemonaid from my lemons and repurposing those to grow strawberries in our raised garden. Love your channel thanks for all the tips and tricks and trying the egg trick with our tomatoes this year.

Your video is informative, you're helpful as well as being in touch with nature and a brilliant gardener … the list goes on! Thank you so much. I've made a little hill for each tomato plant and I'm going to do the egg thing too.

the only problem with this in northern uk is that our season is short, very short so that time its spent providing those extra roots, there would be not enough time for fruiting before it gets too cold :(

if you live in a colder area such as in Canada, instead of planting your tomatoes deep because the ground is colder the deeper you go and it slows the growth, plant your tomatoes in a trench to the rooting will take place in the warmer upper soil in your garden.

We were always taught to put eggshells in hole, its the calcium the plant needs to prevent blossom end rot. You can also add a calcium supplement, wejust always had chickens on the farm and saved the shells after breakfast.

I absolutely love that you wear a pretty dress when you garden. It’s reminiscent of what I imagine perfect gardening to look like. The trellising, the raised beds, the greenhouses, the Potager style planting, a sundress - to me, it’s my little romantic notion of how I think it should be. Oh, and how you never look like your melting in the dead of summer is beyond me. I’d be a sweaty, soaked, dripping hot mess. Last thing - I want you to know that I have learned SO much from you. I don’t have much room to garden and I live in a 5b zone (Nebraska) and growing anything other than corn and soybeans is a challenge. However, you have taught me that I don’t need lots of space or perfect conditions to have a beautiful garden. So, flowers it will be this year! Thank you so much for freely sharing your knowledge AND your life. I bless you back. ☺️

I'm totally inline with your setup and methods Why? well to me it's because I'm also a 7b, guesstimate of 3 to 400 miles east but also a 7b. spacing, pruning, even how you setup the cattle panels with a 2 foot gap cause I'm planning on the maters making at least 6 foot before I may top them. But the one thing is I also plant the maters around a foot deep and alot of the online folks don't agree with that. But that's ok, I'll continue to do that and you are doing the same. So I'm not the only one. My planters I prune the lower leafs before the plant wastes too much energy into supporting them, smaller and the stems get stronger, roots as well more energy put to them. The planters remind me of of palm tree mater plants cause of this until I put them into the ground. Once they get in the ground in the garden, they really take off once they get established. Keep doing what you are doing. Makes me smile cause I've been doing this way a long time. great video...
