I have grown tomatoes for some 40 years. I am what you might say obsessed with them. I have a seed collect of over 10,000 varieties and have created several of my own. It warms my heart to see a young person show such an interest in tomatoes. Folks this girl has done her homework. I have enjoyed many of your videos and look forward to more. I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to get it right and passing along the right information to others. If I were your dad i would be one proud papa. God Bless & Mater On!

Jess here in the U K we have a long established gardening programme called Gardening World hosted by Monty Don. He is brilliant....but you take this subject to another level. Your vocal delivery without an Autocue is unbelievable, how do you do it?. He (Mony) rambles on, God bless him, You, however, adhere the watcher to the screen and it is information complete without you looking away from the camera. Your delivery is rapid. You are ripe for the TV screen, easy on the eye, intelligent, factual, it comes across that you know your stuff. I guarantee that if you were hosting a British TV gardening show it would rock right to the top. Or, you could become a supermodel and WOW the entire globe with your fantastic looks. I think you could accomplish both these things and I think you are beginning to realize just that. You are so natural.

18:00 a trick I learned to quickly extracting calcium from egg shells to get some crushed egg shells (the finer the more surface area) and soak them in some vinegar for a few hours. the vinegar reacts with the egg shells and release CO2 bubbles and leaves the calcium extract in the vinegar solution. I normally dilute it in a 5 litre (1 gallon I think) watering can and water my flowering tomato flowers

Wow! So thorough and helpful. I learned so much! I learned SO much! One thing I was taught was to bury a 1/2 gallon plastic pot in the grind next to my plants and water into that rather than the soil. Since tomatoes have really deep roots, it helps to get water all the way down through the root system.

I form a dish with the soil around the base of stem I think called a basin. Works great for a number of plants especially in early season and plastic free garden! Enough micros in the soil has to stop somewhere! Just read here somewhere grandpa used a coffee can, unwashed would also provide a little nitrogen

Summary: 1. Sizes(small to large): currant, cherry, salads, pastes, slicers. 2. Types: determinate, indeterminate. Heirloom (handed down and consistent), hybrid (open pollinated is key!) 3. Problems: leaf curl (water stress). Wilts and spots (may be blight early on). Cat face faceted blossoms (super blossoms). Blossom end rot (lack of calcium and overwatering). Tomato horn worms (black light tip important). Cracking from inconsistent and shallow watering. 4. Flavour: growing for flavour depends on colour (red is acidic, yellow sweet, black and purple umami). Use molasses for optimal flavour late in season. 5. Harvesting. Best time is in the afternoon. Don't refrigerate and eat ripe. Key Habits => Spacing, pruning, watering from bottom, mulching, aspirin spraying.

Here's a thought, thought not at the edge, but in its own contained area, plant sunchokes (AKA: Jerusalem Artichoke). Related to sunflowers. Very pretty and in the fall you can harvest tubers that are similar to potatoes. They reproduce like crazy, so make sure you plant them in areas you don't care. Flowers and leaves edible too, but don't eat too many leaves. Not that great anyway unless you mix in salad.

I just came across your video & have been skipping ahead a bit & all I find is expert advice all of the time. I live in Australia and have been growing Vegies for the last 40 years. I picked up on the blossom end rot early & then the skin cracking after getting excited trying to pump heaps of water into them to get really big tomatoes after a hot day. Cow manure (dry) or watered down and applied is a great sweetener & makes your tomatoes juicy & tasty. Also I like to use a vertical post & rail method of holding the plants up. Great Video, thanks, Laurie from Down-Under.

Oh try PVC pipe when you water. Like glue an end cap on one end unless you use a tee and three peace of pipe. And use a PVC threaded coupler to put your hose on. And drill holes in the pipe. As small as you can this is a cheap drip irrigation system.

I think all your videos are amazing! This is the first time I didn't let my tomatoes bush out. We will see what happens. Due to garlic taking over my raised beds I have had to put the tomatoes in huge garden center pots, which I have done before. This time I have two exact plants in pots , one with an egg, one without. The one with the egg is double the size of the 'eggless' plant. I would like to see how you tie them to the wire. My garlic is taking longer this year to mature but hopefully I can get some acorn squash in the planters in a month or so.Anyway, love your videos.

This is what I learned about BER: during drought the plants cannot take up calcium, after heavy rainfall its leached from the soil. I tried different products from lime to gypsum and nothing really worked for me until using crab shell from Neptune's Harvest (23% Ca + Mg), this also was a treatment for Root Knot Nematodes that injured my plants.. After building the soil with organic material, crab shell, azomite, worm castings and fish fertilizer + Kelp, my garden was thriving. People walking down the road would comment about the jungle growing in what was once grass.. I usually get 3" of rain after a long drought in July, it destroys my tomato crop until fall.

Very informative. For Blossom end rot; adding crushed aspirin to the soil mix when transplanting seedlings helps. It forces the plant to develop a bacterial resistance in the root system which for some scientific reason prevents Blossom end Rot.

When potting in pots, I used one aspirin crushed with blood meal, and good organic soil mix. In the garden I add the aspirin with the seedling. Always when first planting. It works with squash too. I haven't used it with anything else. My first experience with BER was when I purchased Tomatoes from a store. After that I only use Heirloom seed. Less Problems.
