It’s sad that it took the passing of Andy for me to really give The Smiths an honest listen…I’ve been missing out on the entire package this band had to offer, and I easily could have seen them live back in the 80’s if I had had the good sense to get past arena rock.
This is lifted from 'That Pedal Show'. Dan & Mick guide Johnny through the evolution of his sounds. Johnny willingly demos his guitars and pedals collection, whilst Dan & Mick are blown away. If you like Mr Marr and are into Tone, check out the whole interview. If I knew how, I'd put a link here. 🤔
If you read the body language, and it's not a diss, but Johnny plays a little bit - then he looks over to get the approval, then he looks down at guitar again, and it goes back and forth between the two. It strikes me that if he was 100% he knew from day 1 it was a great riff, he wouldn't need to do that. Johnny, by doing that, is constantly looking for affirmation from the 2 lads to recognise what he's playing - not only from a "oh we've heard that" POV but also from a standpoint of "and it's great isn't it? Please say so" POV from Johnny.
He is just playing it. Guitarists don't just stare at their guitars. He is essentially letting them know this is what I was discussing. Christ dude overanalyzing? And who gives a shit either way. Post your songs so we can critique how you play them.
Time to take matters into your own hands and figure it out, there's only 12 notes, so its got to be something. Its better to learn this way, rather than songs being spoonfed to you (capo at 3, first chord sounds happy in an A shape therefore it must be a C chord) next chord sounds a bit darker, you can see his fingers, its an Em shape which is a Gm at capo 3. etc etc No point getting angry at people, there are better ways to learn guitar if you apply your own knowledge
