In this lesson, we learn how to play a country blues feel on the bass... a must-have groove for any blues or country jam session. It involves the root - fifth pattern that you'll commonly hear on country-influenced tunes that follow a 12 bar blues progression. "Call Me The Breeze" or "Folsom Prison Blues" are great examples.
This play along features bassist Sean Hurley on John Mayer's version of "Call Me The Breeze." Originally written by J.J. Cale, Mayer includes a great version on his record 'Paradise Valley.' You can learn more about Sean Hurley in my book, 'Bass Players To Know.'
Fun fact: you can take private lessons with Ryan! Visit her website to learn more.

Wow I had been using the minor 7th instead of the 6th for the leading tone which sounds ok but your use of the 6th sounds much better, with more of the forward motion that the song calls for. Just a half step can make a world of difference.
@RyanMadoraMusic
@RyanMadoraMusic 3 года назад
Hi Rob, believe it or not, that's a really common mistake... I actually went straight to the b7th upon first listen as well. It's also something that is commonly used... depending on the song, players may choose to use the 6th (as in this case), the b7th, or even the major 7th! What a difference a half step makes.

Hello Ryan thank you very much for the awesome lesson. One question, about the 6th note. Is there any theory behind that? I mean it could be 3rd as well right? Or 6th just sounds nice?
@RyanMadoraMusic
@RyanMadoraMusic Год назад
The 6th is part of the major pentatonic scale, so it works well over a major chord as a substitution for using the 3rd. It also stems from a lot of blues/rock/country guitar parts where the guitar moves from playing the 5th to the 6th. Hope that helps!

Which string do you strike the dead note on. Say you’ve just played the root, the dead note falls on the string of the upcoming 5th?
@RyanMadoraMusic
@RyanMadoraMusic 9 дней назад
Typically I’d play the dead note on the string of the upcoming note, just before playing the fretted note. It’s not a strict rule by any sorts, but in this type of line I would do it that way.
