About me:
I graduated from the University of North Texas with a Master's degree in jazz studies where I played with the One O'Clock Lab Band. Jazz can be very difficult to learn and perform, and it has been one of my greatest challenges and pleasures to tackle this music. I hope that my playing and videos bring you joy and happiness in whatever degree possible. Thank you for taking the time to watch :)

If pedal Db is still out of your range feel free to start on whatever note is comfortable. No judgements about it, this is why you're working on it :)

The size of your mouthpiece is also really important. I just switched to a 1 5/16 G and it has helped me improve my pedal tones greatly

I play euphonium, would you still recommend the book? While i may not have to go as low, do you think it would improve my sound in the lower range? Im thinking of playing more bass trombone, but i dont have one atm.

For me the most difficult notes to play on bass trombone are those who are just above the pedal Bflat. I mean when you need both triggers. In many arrangements for Big Band you are faced to play that notes with a big sound. In my opinion it is easier to play the pedal notes than these notes above. Do you change the position of your embouchure or jaw? By the way, I like very much your nice bass trombone sound.

I had the same issue. What i would tell you to do is frown and pick up the muscles on the sides of your nose and blow, and all notes are in flat positions. Kinda hard to type and explain it but if you experiment with it you’ll figure it out

I mainly struggle with the D to the B natural above the pedal note range

Hey, so when using the Advanced Embouchure Studies, when first starting out do you follow the tips guide on keeping a consistent embouchure position? Or would you say it's better to get through the exercise a couple of times, then try to keep the same embouchure all the way through?

Hey! Just seeing this comment! I think its better to have a consistent embouchure through the ranges, but shifting happens naturally so I don't worry about it too much. Lots of lip slurs help to cover the shifts and make it easier to cross the ranges. Hope this helps!

@@realsaucytom I really need to get back on it. It's such a great tool for helping your lower register. Thank you for your reply!

What is the full range on Bass Trombone?(The lowest it can go)
@cookie0329
@cookie0329 2 года назад
realistically it would be a double pedal Bb, but in theory with both triggers and the slide all the way out (this would be insanely hard to play) you could go to probably a B natural below that
@cookie0329

it would also probably sound like shit

Double pedal Bb is the lowest, it’s with both triggers and slide all the way out

@@realsaucytom i see, the bass i play on, does not have a 1 g its a normal tenor one, still able to hit that note?
@Avstinato

@@apolloboi775Range on trombone is less about the mouthpiece and more about the player and horn, every pro tenor player can play the lowest note their horn can go to and vice versa. Working on expanding range note by note and knowing how your horn responds in different registers is more important than the label of whatever you're playing on. That being said, a bigger/deeper mouthpiece will help the majority of players in consistency in the low register as well as intonation and control.

@@Avstinato ohh, that makes sense, thanks again, i have not really looked into or thought about that because i have only been playing for 4 years
@Avstinato
@Avstinato Год назад
@@apolloboi775 Yeah a lot of high schoolers start to look for deeper mouthpieces around your age, a 6 1/2 (in my opinion) is too small for even most classical tenor players. The lower the numbers the bigger the mouthpiece, and the standard is usually around a 1 1/2 for bass players. If you live near a music shop, are studying with a lesson teacher, or your school just has a box of mouthpieces sitting around I would see about trying to start switching. Just know if will take about a month if not more to get fully adjusted, so I wouldn't start immediately if you have an audition or concert coming up. Keep playing, good luck on bass I know it's a completely different animal than tenor is.
