Really good lesson. Excellent presentation. Another rhythm I learned, which you may like is: On the 1, the "and" of 3, the "and" of 4 (push), and the 3 of the next measure. Thanks again for the lesson.
Thank you very much for your lessons. Please do a lesson on the relationship of scales and chords, to associate them on a improvisation basis. A good start point is to get a standard jazz piece and improvise over it, then explain which scales you used to improvise over each chord. Thank you a lot, cheers from Brazil.
Pick one rhythm at a time. Play that one rhythm to the whole "Fly me to the moon" form. Repeat with each individual 10 rhythms... then, if you're courageous, start mixing and matching 2-3 rhythms at a time! (-:
Thanks for the great lesson. I must admit though that when I try to count it out when I play I seem to lose it. I seem to be able to feel it out much better. LOL!
Great lesson, just saying though that it took me longer to figure out the chords that you were playing than to play these rhythms but its all good. for future reference its easier to focus on the topic of the lesson if i dont have to focus on figuring out the chordal tones (not that it matters what chords you or i am playing, but in terms of playing along with you i would need to know them) Much love and thanks for the lesson
+Road Waves seriously.. It immensely takes away from the lesson that i cant keep up with what youre playing. i understand that its only the rhythm that matters, but i cant properly execute even an example without a shred of what to play
+Road Waves Good point Road. As you can see, this is an "old" lesson. :-) For some jazz blues stuff (for guitar) see this page of resources: www.jazzguitarlessons.net/jazz-guitar-blues-0.html
Thanks for the nice compliment! What you are looking for "comping wise" is made of several variables : many little "things" you'll need to work on. I don't promise I can shoot and upload a video about it because the subject is in fact ... too broad! You know ... learn the guitar, learn harmony (in general), learn the tunes, listen a lot and... play!
Hi Angelo! Thanks for letting us know. We're in the process of sorting these things out. Here's your link :) www.jazzguitarlessons.net/hubfs/five-key-jazz-rhythms.pdf
Although i'm way beyond this level when it comes to playing rhythm, this is quite interesting, and fairly intelligent.I'll insist on the fact I'm fed up of playing with guitarists who just cannot comp, take the lead and have me playing rhythm all the time... Once my turn comes, the groove is so sloppy that I can't even phrase...Learn how to play rhythm, you guys
In example 4 of the two bar patterns-Although the 'An 4' is tied, you're singing the fourth quarter as though it's tied, which is different from what is written. Other than that small mistake, this is a very good lesson and this is a topic that needs to be much more broadly addressed and studies by jazz guitarists-After all, what it the number one function of a guitar??? To provide chordal backing!!!
My metronome is running at about 120 bpm. The chord shapes are almost entirely based off of "shell" shapes (including only the root, 3rd, and 7th, or the root, 7th, and 3rd of each chord). So, you get chords like 6x67xx for Bb7, and x656xx for Eb7. You can add extensions to both of these shell shapes on the 2nd string: 6x677x for Bb7(b13), and x6566x for Eb9, for example.
Yes, although my teaching schedule is filled up. Check out the Jazz Guitar Coaching sessions page here: store.jazzguitarlessons.net/p/jazz-guitar-coaching
Beside the quality of your lessons, I thank you much for it, the french flavor of your English accent makes your explanations so much more understable for a french learning guitarist. Thx again. At least you give a hope for personnal potential progress.
