Actually, this is very useful for classical music percussionists! we use a different / modernized construction of this instrument and I personally think that it has technical limitations in opposed to this traditional construction. I don't even know the reason why they started the modern design... I'm quite sure tho that we don't have this female-male / high-low difference between the two pairs of castanets anymore which seems to play a huge role in the traditional construction. If you can make any more videos on the subject, I'm sure my community would appreciate the knowledge you spread out! At least I would love it! Great video, best regards! ☺️
László Demeter thanks for your comments . I never played with the modern version of castanets so I can’t say much on the difference but as a musician I am sure you would notice the difference. I am working on a new video. Will see what else I can explore about that . Thanks 😉
I was able to get a nice rhia after two weeks practice using these exercises. It helps to have a good pair of castanets. Make sure you match your hand size to the the castanet size It makes a world of difference
William Denton that is great ! And you are absolutely right . After you know how to play you will make it work with any size but the truth is the correct castanet can make all the difference 😉
@@cerbinoflamenco8194 I purchased a Filigrana size 6 Bolero pair. Just love the sound. I am a percussionist so I know a thing or two about percussion instruments. There is nothing you cannot do with castanets. A castanet roll once you learn how to make a double bounce is as good as a snare drum roll.
Thank you Cerbino. I went thru your first video a few times and did well. The second video will take more time, especially those triplets! LOL No idea how you do that but very cool! I also watched your video on picking out the proper first time castanets. I like your ideas on muffling the sound when needed. I bought my wood castanets online from Boutique Flamenco located in Florida(not sure if you heard of them). Their castanets are made in Spain! I have written a few Spanish Flamenco style songs on my guitar and recorded them and might want to go back and add castanets to the recordings! Anyway, stay well and thanks! :)
I love your videos! I ended up buying a simple pair of castanets and have been practicing but I find the ria the hardest to do. Very informative video none the less 👍🏾
Thanks and welcome to the channel . Ria is really hard to master for sure , but if you keep practicing you WILL get there. Is like learning to ride a bike, don’t give up 😊
This is so great!! Gracias! CAN YOU PLEASE LET US KNOW HOW THE KNOT IS TIED? i just pulled mine out from years ago and would like to properly learn but want to make sure i have the knot tied right. Sooo much appreciate your skill!!
Great lesson! I can't wait for my castañuelas to arrive and start practicing! Are you in New Mexico? The picture in the background looks like it. I'm in NM!
Zinga Gerrard hey there , Is usually like this if you are a beginner , some students can take months to perfect the technique but once you have it never goes away , my recommendation is to keep doing the exercises , I will be posting another videos soon hopefully that one can help you as well 😉
Great video! I just had one question. When I practice the "ri" motion, it feels right on my skin or on a table but when I try to play it, it is almost like the castinet doesn't open fast enough between each finger press. I can't get the fast clicks. I thought it was because they were too loose but I can't seem to get it right.
What you are describing is very normal. I recommend you tapping 1,2,3,4,5 as fast as you can to ensure your castanet is in the right place. The transition to “Ri” is not easy and it takes time to get it right , try moving the position of your hand slightly down , your finger pointing toward the floor. Or completely the opposite , elevate your arms so your hands are at the height of your chest instead your belly button. Every student I have found that a change on the position of their arms somehow assisted them with RIA, so I would say experiment , see if something works for you, when I started playing it was all about repetition, it took me months to get my Ria so don’t give up. 😊
