I went to a Doobie brothers show at the Spectrum in Philadelphia in 1982 and John McPhee played all the lead on this including the intro , the sound of him playing a Flying V at really high volume absolutely blew my mind. It was the best guitar sound that I’ve ever heard in my life. Thanks for this lesson ( it’s brilliant) I just wanted to let you know of my amazing experience thanks and to mention John McPhee , he blew my mind. Best wishes to you from Northern Ireland 🌌💕🌠.

You are a treasure . I tried learning this decades ago. Didn't get very far and what I did play was well, a little off. Lol . For starters , I was doing the up down chucka -chuka -cheat . Your opinion about guitarists and the 95% is 100% true. It has always been about the groove, punctuated with a solo that grooves just as hard.

Holy crap. I never comment on any of these but hell... I have heard this song about 6 trillion times and just have to say....what an ear you have! You are picking up things I doubt even the original players were consciously doing. I am an old who gave up playing years ago...but still own a couple of guitars. You have def. inspired me. Great job! I just wish you would rip out full versions at the end.

Nice lesson! I learnt it a lil diff; when walking down I hold the A & D at 7th fret & walk the base from D to C#. Gives it an eerie, foggy, swamp feel that's resolved with the A power chord.

Great lesson , Tom Johnson's sound is the Doobie Brothers . Great insight on Johnson's rhythm playing , per Johnson in interview : It was about a guitar style I called “chucka chucka," which for me was about playing percussive stuff and finding a way to put a drummer into the song without a drummer being there. That’s also where “Long Train Runnin’” came from.

Andy, i have come to understand and totally believe what you are saying about rythm. Me being sinestral, i realise that left hand is as important, if not more so than right. Working on Ramble On really demonstrated this to me, (pretty hard to actually get that rythm right!), and starting on Sultans rythm, you are so right! By the way Listen To The Music is Tom's best, awesome song.

Wow...right on!! That's exactly my experience with the Doobies! Really appreciate the McDonald tunes but the Tom Johnson stuff is the Doobies! I'm acquainted with the Doobs manager Bruce Cohn and have met Tom several times and watched him perform with the band 5-6 years ago at the Cohn winery....literally 3 ft from where I was standing. Best rock concert ever. You ever get to No. California, stop by and we'll go over to the winery...maybe some of the band will be hangin' out.

Absolutely love your lessons and the Doobies are one of my favorites. There is one song of theirs that I hope one day you'll provide a lesson on and that's Toulouse Street. A tune that is so hauntingly beautiful, yet they hardly ever play it live. In fact the first time I've heard them play it was on the album "Live from the Beacon Theatre". Patrick Simmons is a brilliant finger stylist. Thanks for all you do.

Another really interesting vid here S&P. It just struck me that one thing to look out for here for learner guitarists out there is that you can hear fret slap on almost every chord played. That isn't in any way a criticism of either the playing or the guitar, both are superb. It's just pointing out that there is an obsession today with having a guitar with an ultra low action and also without a hint of fret buzz or slap. Once you are playing amplified it isn't anything like the problem people are being made to think it is. As Flanders and Swann sang, "It all makes work for the working man to do!". Don't fall for the industry myths and legends, always use your ears and your brain to question and don't be afraid to reject them!
