Man there's talented people. Then there's Musical geniuses. I can't imagine what Ronnie was thinking when he chose Gary's slow laid back easy style then wanted Allens hyper fast pace slamming the strings thru the guitar. But we are so lucky and blessed he did. I can't name two more totally different guitarists that sound so good and compliment each other better.

Are you stupid? Ronnie didn't choose Allen Collins because of his style. Ronnie never even heard Allen play. As a matter of fact, Allen climbed a tree when he heard Ronnie was looking for him. Allen thought Ronnie was going to beat him up. They weren't but about 14 years old. Ronnie was looking for him because he heard he played guitar.

Allen's playing spoke to me so much that I built a custom guitar from scratch as a tribute. I wish I could post the pics for y'all. And BTW I live adjacent to the legendary hellhouse property down here in Peter's Creek, Florida. Only a hundred yards from the railroad track photos on the "nuthin fancy" album.

I used to ride by there every day to high school smelling the fragrances of the nearby cow fields along the way. Through some friends, I eventually made it to the HH before it was no longer - what a special place it was. Amazing they could play in those cramped quarters!

Thank you for this. Allen and Skynyrd is largely responsible for me continuing to learn guitar when I was first starting as a teen. I’ve not really played much in the last 4/5 years but the last week I’ve decided to break the guitars out and play a little more and seeing this video was a nice little piece of info, and there’s not much like this video I’ve ever found on Allen’s playing.

Glad to hear you're getting back into it! Allen and Gary inspired me too. Really the search for Allen's fat firebird tone was the main reason I fell in love with his play style. Playing like him also toughens your hands!

Allen Collins is my favorite Skynyrd guitarist and an underrated player in my opinion. Not only was he the coolest looking guy on the stage but he was an incredible player he gets overlooked because, Ed King, Gary Rossington and Steve Gains but Allen was holding it down and he also played killer leads to but he’s the one I always focused on when I watch old Skynyrd videos.

That style of chord use was pretty popular back then, used by many guitarists, in various different forms. The guitarist that first made it popular was Jimi Hendrix. He used that style of chord use in a song called "The wind cries Mary". When I first started playing, I took notice of songs that used that style of chording. The Doobie Brothers had a song called Without You, that use that same chording. I'm sure that this styling has blues roots and were probably used in earlier decades as well.

That comes with a long time of listening and it a huge plus to play guitar then you pick out the tone of Gary's 59 Les Paul or Allen's firebird or Ed King's strat or Steve gains strat . Once you see them live in concert on RU-vid a few times then you'll know exactly who plays what. Sometimes it will surprise you

The way I see it is with the original band, Gary sounded a bit like Paul Kossoff, Allen was more like Clapton in his Cream days, and Ed was on a Strat, and sounded more like a country picker. When Steve Gaines came along he replaced Ed, and Rickey replaced Allen. A bit over simplistic I know, but it's a start. Watch the youTube vids as well to see who's playing what. And don't forget Hughie Thomasson and Randall Hall, who were also with them. Hughie's best work was with the Outlaws, and I always reckoned that Skynyrd should done a couple of Outlaws numbers live.
