What about people like me, who's nails on the middle (whole) and ring (on the right side) finger have been torn for many, many years and just won't heal and grow back? I should add, i play the electric guitar finger style and while i don't need crazy classical nails, i sure love and prefer a solid base of nails for comfort, uniformity in loudness and sound and overall balance. All my other nails grow and even due to the harsh treatment of the steel strings, they recuperate and look healthy, just those two are not.. It is awful as i'm sure you can imagine how that must feel like. This course is a brilliant idea and it is always a real pleasure seeing you and hearing you pluck some strings. With admiration from Vienna, lars

@@lowandodor1150 Hi Lars, thank you for the encouragement! I'm not sure I fully understand your predicament. If you are saying you have no fingernail at all on the middle finger, it should still work since we are plucking only with the flesh with this technique. It is worth saying though that have no nail on all the fingers is also gives uniformity in loudness, sound, and balance. But the overall effect of each is a different sound. I'm happy to help you further if you reach out at Brandonackerguitar@gmail.com Cheers, Brandon

As a mechanic, rock climber, and free diver its almost impossible to keep long sturdy nails. Ive practiced almost solely without nails, but the times I do have nails I notice the sound is totally different (and so is the technique). When my nails accidentally grow out Ill accidentally clip strings with my nail because my muscle memory keeps my fingers so close to the strings. Im able to replicate well the sounds of classical music without nails, its taken alot of muscle memory and fine tuning of where and how hard to pluck with the tip of my finger to get similar noises, especially with picado. More than possible with practice!

One of my biggest dreams is to play classical guitar. I'm completely passionate about classical music and I've tried several times to learn it myself but I haven't been successful yet haha. The way Brandon teaches is incredible and I had a huge desire to purchase the course for beginners, however, being Brazilian, the conversion to our currency makes the course still a little expensive for my reality, even though I know the value is super. right in front of all this incredible content. I was a student of Javier Hinojosa who was a student of Emilio Pujol. So I learned without nails and even years later when having nails, Hinojosa taught me how to shape them and the right hand technique to produce an unique mellow sound yet with some brilliant. I however never used the nail of the thumb or only by exception, so as to never have redundant loud basses. I also learned the Abel Carlevaro technique where nails are necessary. The problem is that the sound gets too thin and metallic.

I started guitar with classical lessons and later took lessons as an adult, and that teacher was good with no nail. I haven’t kept up with it, but still play classical sometimes But my classical is getting fixed right now (regluing bridge, and cleaning up a previous repair) I also play bass with my fingers, so long nails don’t work. So no nails works well.

Looks great! Would this course also be of benefit to lute players, or is the no-nails guitar technique significantly different than (say, "thumb out") lute technique?
@brandonacker
@brandonacker 5 месяцев назад
Hi! For me the technique I teach here is the exact same as what I've developed for archlute, baroque guitar and theorbo. The thumb out and pinky down approach of Sor and Piccinini seem identical to me. So yes, in short I think thumb- out lute players will benefit equally in terms of the technique, exercises and touch. The only thing to say is I use 19th century guitar repertoire for the pieces. I'm happy to answer any other questions! Brandon

It works very well in that repertoire for sure. Brandon Music and educational courses are VAT free in the UK. I have just been trying to sign up for your guitar course and no nails course. Your website is adding VAT. This is a complex area and one that has been through the tribunals on more than a few occasions. My understanding is that "the supply of private tuition, in a subject ordinarily taught in a school or university, by an individual teacher acting independently of an employer" is an exempt supply, but not when provided by a company (unless it is a school per the education act).

I have thin nails and they keep breaking. I found out that I don't need them very long to be able to use them but sometimes I have to play with flesh, and I think I'll benefit from your experience. In addition to the nail issue, perhaps most importantly, I need to improve my tone. I have a Cordoba C7 and I want to learn how to make the best sound possible out of it before getting a better instrument. Warmly, from a French lady 🙂
@brandonacker
@brandonacker 5 месяцев назад
Bonjour madame, It's true when using nail you can keep them very short and mix flesh and nail into each pluck for the nicest sound. I found that cutting my nails off and learning to produce a good sound taught me a lot about how a string wants to move and I teach that in this course. Then I found that when I grew my nails back in, I in turn also understood how to play a better tone with nails as well. Sorry for your nail issue. Perhaps playing without nails will be the compromise you need. Bonne chance, Brandon

Changing to baroque lute I quit classical guitar several years ago cause it was so frustrating that I neither reached the technical level nor the tone compared to playing with nails. But playing classical guitar without nails couldn' t be as frustrating as playing 13 course baroque lute with nails ;-). So maybe I should try it with your help. Thanks for the inspiration!

I started with classical guitar with a great teacher (Miroslav Kefurt from Czechoslovakia) who gave me great training with nails. However, I eventually progressed to renaissance lute, which is without nails. I struggled between the two because I didn't want to lose the guitar repertoire that I had worked so hard on achieving. Life interrupted and passed a number of decades not being able to play at all. During Covid lockdowns I came back to lute - this time without nails - and it's going well. However, I'd still like to be able to play some of my original guitar repertoire (like Recuerdos de la Alhambra, Bach BVW 999 (unless I can afford a Baroque lute in the meantime 😁)). So maybe this course will be what I need! One question - I assume playing nail-less involves using low tension strings (like lute), but what are recommendations for an appropriate guitar (not too expensive) for nail-less playing?
@brandonacker
@brandonacker 5 месяцев назад
Hi, yes I think the course works well for general thumb-out renaissance or baroque no nail lute playing with the pinky down. For me, 19th century style guitars are the best for no nail playing because they are made for low tension. Torres, stauffer, panormo, etx. In the course we play at 392hz, a whole step lower to give the very low tension needed.
@zaydmosh
@zaydmosh 5 месяцев назад
@@brandonacker Thanks for responding, Brandon! Before taking the course I'll have to get a guitar. My renaissance lute (10-course) is currently strung at A4=415 hz (I think that is a half-step down), and I play pinky down with thumb-out (even for early renaissance). I also tried A4=440 with the lute tuned to F instead of G, which also sounded great.

Short enough so the nail does not touch the fretboard wood. Essentially, the nail should never be longer than the fingertip on the fretting hand or it will force you to play with flat fingers (aka bad technique).

Horse person, kayaker, traditional archer. What are these "nails" of which you speak? (No, seriously, I've already started the course and it's amazing. Five nailless stars.)

A bit unrelated to the video topic, but... For some reason I cannot access your amaozn gear link. Granted, I am outside of the US, but affiliate links usually work for me here nonetheless. Any idea how I could reach the link's destination anyway? It always leads me to Amazon's "sorry, something went wrong on our end" message.

Yes it works on my newer videos :)

@@brandonacker, with the individual items? Indeed it seems to work, thank you 🙏 However, do you happen to know if there is a way to view your full list of gear from there? If not, it is ok, as I have now found your link to the specific piece I wanted, but I was wondering if there is a way to view your full list ☺️ I know that after going to your affiliate link, I can essentially purchase any item and stay with the affiliation, so the strings I can find on my own. But I was curious to see what else you use. I honestly feel like it's right under my nose somewhere... like my keys when I leave the house 😉 By the way, just watched your twin reveal. You two are charming together 😁

Glad it worked. It's the only list I have cheers!

The strings are the same already. Historically gut and I often use nylgut (synthetic gut) for concerts

Is this course ok for absolute beginners?
@brandonacker
@brandonacker 5 дней назад
Hi! No but my course for absolute beginners is Classical Guitar Pro which you can find here classicalguitar-pro.com/p/classical-guitar-pro That courses takes you from knowing nothing all the way to playing your first recital. Often people buy both courses (you get a big discount) and they take the no nail course second. If you have any other questions, just message me at Brandonackerguitar@gmail.com

I have played with nails and no nails, but I just can't get the volume without nails

I suppose if you like a muffled sound rather than a sharper, clear tone, one can play guitar without nails, and some may do it quite well, but for me personally, I have to let my nails grow to a desirable length. Not too long, not too short, there is a middle ground for this technique. Good luck, friends. Keep on playing.

It comes down to taste. Both techniques are valid and have both pros and cons. I don't like your choice of a derogatory word though. I don't hear a "muffled" sound, I hear a warm and mellow sound. One could easily flip it and say nails sound aggressive, sharp, and too bright.

yeah i never understood it. being a normie hobbie acoustic player since middle school i never had nails and i eventually taught myself how to finger-pick in the singer-songwriter/bluegrass/folk vibe and ive always done fine without picks or nails on my picking hand

I hate having nails to play classical guitar. It's a pain...and I get plenty of weird looks here and there from people that don't know why. I must admit though, I think classical guitar sounds better played with nails. Even on those small clips in this video, some of the notes were a little harder to hear and a bit less defined. Almost "muddy" sounding. It's like the initial attack with the nail defines the note more cleanly. I'll persist for the sound and I'm lucky I can get away with them for my job and the rest of my sports / hobbies.

my problem is my nails are naturally thin and bendy and if I grow them out they catch on things and bend backwards 😭so I keep them as short as possible lmao

It is simply taste. You say muffled, I say mellow warm and beautiful. Sor said he never heard anyone make a beautiful sound WITH nails. To each his own.

For some, the problem is that their nail structure is weak. No amount of glued-on reinforcement will reliably work. You just wind up with hideous non-functional claws attached to your fingers.
