In this video we go over some very key elements in allowing us to play the trombone smooth and clean.
This is what we cover.
Step. 1 Articulation / Wrist Movement
Step. 2 Adding Notes
Step. 3 Slowly increase tempo
Step. 4 Close Eyes and Mentally Imagine you have values of keys (I also recommend that you record yourself)

Paul The Trombonist oh my god this was so perfect, I was just trying to find something on this topic, articulations and slide stuff to make it less “glissy”. I don’t actually know if it’s about that I haven’t watched the whole video yet, but anyways Paul, if you’ve got the time would you watch my latest videos on my Major Scales, I need some tips and exercises on how to get a better articulation going up and how to not gliss some notes down, my playing is a bit sloppy right now. Thanks

Trombone was the first instrument I learned to play, back in 5th grade. Something about the tone, the slide, and the way Glenn Miller could make it wail really captivated me. I switched to Tuba for a year in high school, and fell in LOVE with that beast! I also joined choir and learned to sing properly, took piano lessons, and above all, picked up the guitar. Guitar has been my main squeeze ever since. However a couple years ago, when I started regularly attending local open mics, I discovered that a lot of singers and guitarists also played saxophone. Occasionally one or two guys would bring their sax's to open mic and jam on a few songs. After asking around, I discovered that everyone USED to play the trombone. I decided to blow the dust out of my old horn and give it a try. I'm SO glad I have! Coming back to the first instrument I learned years later, after having invested so much time and energy into guitar, singing, music theory, and song writing, has been INCREDIBLE! Thanks for doing what you do, Paul!

I was not in band as a youth. I started playing guitar when I was 16. I first started playing clarinet while working at a music store that that has band rentals as a major portion of its profits (just to see if I could)...in my early 30’s. Around 33 or 34 I picked up trombone as I was going through a technical college program to learn band instrument repair. I still play guitar (mostly bass) primarily, but trombone is my hobby. I love the sound and range of the instrument, and while I may never go pro, I love it!

Good stuff, clearly stated and well demonstrated. I love the invisible trombone effect. When your background is reflected in the upper bell and tuning slide it disappears. Stay safe and keep that camera rolling.

Paul, wrist is very important, but using your fingers is at least as important. Imagine throwing the slide from note to note. If I may suggest.

Paul, this is off topic but I want to get it out to the trombone world: I am sure you are aware, but even after many years playing the trombone I was surprised when I found the "gunk" that quickly gathers inside the mouthpiece receiver on my trombone! When I cleaned the horn I noticed that even with light use this brown goo forms in the "Ventura tube" behind my mouthpiece. I am thinking of all the young students of the trombone that may not realize how often this area must be cleaned. It only takes a few hours of playing to get this buildup. I am careful to brush my teeth before playing, but still, find some residue after just a few hours. I use a rod with a sheath of cloth to clean the inside of the tube; and for quick checks in between, I have some extra-large cotton swabs [Q-tips.] I buy these from gun cleaning suppliers along with the patches I use to clean the slides.

Paul, when you played slow it sounded almost like a beginner, then when you played fast it was great! Is there a way to sound good on bone while playing very slow?

Man, you're the best! I just recorded myself after watching this video and I noticed the difference between my articulation and yours as well. I totally understand now. Articulation is so basic but it makes a HUGE difference in someone sound and clearness. Keep the videos Paul!!! Thanks again! 😊😊

I would be scared to buy a trombone if they had to ship it to me. It might get damaged in the transporting. I would feel safer buying one at the music shop even if I had to pay more $.
