This video is for conga players interested in learning the conga parts to the Makuta rhythm (Caja, Mula & Cachimbo). I recorded these separate parts in Havana in January 2012. The conga rhythms were played by Freddy Ernesto Valdés Martínez, a percussion teacher and member of the rumba groups 'Clave Y Guaguanco', 'Yoruba Andabo', 'Raises Profunda' & 'Solar de Los 6'.
I also demonstrate my technique of playing multiple percussion parts on the electric kit, along with the possibility to have programmed sample switching while playing the kit.
This is possible because all the parts are kept in separate samplers. It also means each part can be muted, mixed (volume & EQ), panned & have any other effects added, independently of other parts.
I recommend Freddy to anyone planning to go to Cuba to learn about rumba styles. His email is okilagba@hotmail.com. Email him or send a message to me on loopdrummer@gmail.com if you would like his telephone contact.
