Small Disclaimer, the Song “The Way It Is “ is Actually in the Key of G, I was in 7th Grade @ the Time, I did learn it in G but I was stuck in F telling the story, don’t beat me up 2 bad. Kevin’s Simple Music Universe is a little intimidating to sit in, Thanx for All the Support…!!🙏🏾💪🏾
Rodney East is a musician's musician, the type that you just know you can listen to for hours and even those that are on that level want to hear him just play.
This is probably, for me, your BEST video. Not so much from the tutorial perspective but the "heart" in the both of you! Thank you so much for making this and sharing it with us!
Rodney East is one of my favorite musicians. Bruce Hornsby & Yellow Jackets are top tier performers that inspire so much of the gospel sound we hear today, especially in “talk music”. Rodney East, I’d love to shed with you guys and exchange ideas.
Rodney is a super humble and cool guy, KC! Not sure if people knew it, but if anyone is a late bloomer on piano, Bruce Hornsby did not start piano until he was 17 years old, yet he remains one of the most important pianists of the 21st century, as he established a sound that is his own. It is a clever blending of the Americana side of jazz that you hear in some of Keith Jarrett's work, a big influence on him, as well as that pure cinematic western landscape that goes back to Dave Grusin and even Aaron Copeland. I don't think you can ever go wrong with that sound as most of us grew up loving all those motion pictures that used this kind of style on many of their soundtracks to better express the emotion of the stories being told. Because of that, it remains a kind of pleasant, thought provoking, and nostalgic mood woven into us without us even realizing it.❤😊
Wowowowow!!! I never knew that about Bruce! That’s definitely a spiritual awakening that he embarked upon at the later years ☀️💚🔥 He bridged jazz and contemporary pop without too many tricks and piano licks, distractions!!!
I absolutely love and appreciate both of these gentlemen for all they’ve sown into so many of us musicians. The fact that Rodney just learned about drop 2’s after doing them effortlessly for years is mind-blowing to me!
Ah thank you so much! Love to be part of your musical journey! I know, that blew my mind too! 🤯 We can always learn something new.... even if we already knew it! 😂 Much love ☀️💚
The only thing I don’t like with the name of “drop 2” is that it doesn’t go along with the rest of what’s consistent with musical numbers. It should be called “drop 3” but hey 🤷🏽♂️
I agree…. The only issue is - sometimes the second highest note isn’t the 3rd scale degree… Drop 2 works for any chord, you’re dropping the second highest note from the top down to the bottom… so it doesn’t matter what note or scale degree it is… Much love ☀️💚
Yessir! I think it originated from the UK, the Beatles etc... listen to some of their songs and you'll here a hint of Drop 2 chords, as if it was the very start of a new stoic sound.
He's doing all this by ear not knowing theory. I was doing the same thing not on on drop 2's but other chords progressons. The lick don't come from guitar players orign. It comes from singers first. other instruments have taken it. All instruments imulate the human voice
Yessir you are spot on, great observation... He has several sub chords instead of going to the 1 chord... I'll definitely revisit this topic in an upcoming video! Much love ☀💚
Yes sirrrrr Bruce Hornsby, Thats it! Thats why your chord structure speaks to me. Again, i am not a pianist; Im a guitarist. I was raise in a gospel home but listen to music like Journey, Air Supply, Bruce Hornsby and the Range and Steely Dan which wasn't popular in my demographic and culture when i was younger. I just loved music that spoke to me and music like Bruce Hornsbys did. So, when I came across Mr. East's playing i was like "man, i love his chord structure" but, i didn't know why until now!
I’m Nigerian and the kind of love and respect I have for Rodney East is on another level. I marvel at the way he plays every note with simplicity and articulation.
I think if your last name is East you got to be good. Nathan East is a great Bass player. I wonder if they are related. I met Nathan and know him. He is humble as well. Mostly all Babyfaces live Bass recording is Nathan East playing.
So is a drop 2 a 1st inversion chord?? I’m a music major still learning theory so idk but that’s what it looks like to me ??? Edit: oh and you also ad the second? Like a 4sus but with 2 instead
The day I discovered the drop 2 chords by accident I never stopped using them. They’re probably one of the most important chords for talk music and worship.
I seldom comment on YT videos. But I must appreciate your love and the effort you put in to see all grow KC. Thank you for giving yourself to the cause. God bless you man!. And to Rodney East, He's being an inspiration for me for over 5 years now. God bless you both
I had a fantastic experience working with Rodney East in my recording studio in Sauk Village, IL. Rodney handled all the music tracks while I recorded Reggie.
I love the drop 2's so much this stuff makes me mad everytime I play guitars and piano it drives me crazy in church backing up the preacher till audience laugh amd amazed❤..... I need more on this stuff😊
@@prettysimplemusic Thank you so much for this but my mind is crazy with this stuff and am interested knowing more on this because when I woke up in the morning my mind dreams of drop 2's so much even when I listen to music my heart enjoys fixing the stuff in the song and I become happy 🥰 Once again thanks for posting this video that will make me crazy and challenged forever on drop 2's ❤️
I would add master of them all. Bruce was a great start as he added his own flavor to it. I was a Jeff Lorber Oscar Peterson and Joe Samples fan myself when I was learning to play keyboards.
Here's how I taught myself drop 2 in the 3rd grade. I just think about it as the 2nd chord inversion (or never play the 1). Growing up in the 90s without teachers, we didn't have theory. You'd just played stuff that you heard on jazz, classical, and radio albums.
I love his story about learning that piece from vinyl. He even went back to how he had to search the song by needle dropping. The struggles lol! Undeniable talent.
Here's the thing... what makes @RodneyEast the GOAT is that his playing is magical and EASY to the ear... but very complex to those who know... The regular gospel player thinks the more complex the chord the better he looks, which is so tired and cheesy.. chill with the Flat9Dim7sharp 11 bro, no one cares haha...🤣 Rodney has grasped complexity and regurgitated it in a way that his playing is accessible to players, layman and everyone in between. 💯 Also Rodney, w'ere gonna need to see you do a cover of Bruce Hornsby's Song A, H, D or C on your channel!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
@@prettysimplemusic aaaa....ok ....O get You ...rothoscopie justo the hands ando put on keys ....yo produce that vídeo ...ok ... Thanks . Great video content great muscician and production
Hello KC , i realy appreciate this but honestly as a learner don't get anything from this , without disrespecting u , that guy is just shoing off , we're used to u the way u simplify our music journey ,be blessed , i'd like u alone to give me another version of this video , Talkin' on my behalf coz i see many of us alredy know about this
With the drop 2, I think it would've been a good idea to also incorporate 7th chords along with triads so that people would get a better idea of what you mean by "you drop the 2nd highest note".
I love Rodney's piano playing skills. I wanna be like him in the future. It's Nikki from Jamaica 🇯🇲.I changed my RU-vid name to get serious about my channel. Peace and love
I love me some Bruce Hornsby piano. I found him from the She's gotta have it series. There is one peice I could Never find the name of but I'm 80% sure it's B.H. Excellent playing in this video.
I so much respect Rodney... Very talented and humble man. He requested for me to be on his live on IG. Much respect Sir. 🙌🏾🙏🏾. Thanks KC for all the piano lessons🙏🏾
OMGAWD! Drop 2!!! What a hack!!! Honestly this has reignited my songwriting!! I literally melted first time I heard Bruce Hornsby and forged a path playing piano - but you just gave me the NEXT LEVEL!!!! BLESSED and grateful guys!
I'm at work being inspired man. Wow. KC influenced my playing a lot and I've been on Rodney east for a long time but I never knew who he was. But his touch always got me.
@@prettysimplemusic no, THANK YOU for dropping these “drop 2 chords” and linking up with the legends we know and love! Definitely copping this package! Been a fan, keep going king!
Interestingly I have found drop 2 easier to just feel versus thinking too hard about it. I never think about dropping the 2. It's more about the high (melody) note being a 3rd away from the bass note. When I first figured it out by ear, I thought of it more like a major sus 2 chord, with the major 3rd as the bass. Obviously minor chords can also be drop 2 so I i developed that a little later. So anyway I kind of relate to Rodney not knowing what it is, when I first heard the concept of drop 2, I was like "oh.... That's what it's called"😂
WHAT!??! I didn't see this coming!! This be dripping. I have been watching both of you guys on different channels and you come together... This is like a party for me men!! Two for the price of one. Buy one, get one free. Love you guys. I pray to meet you guys one day. God help me!! Wooooow!! You just made my day. For the past weeks I have been reminiscing and watching Bruce Hornsby's The way it is ...What a pleasant surprise...Keep it up guys....
Great stuff but these are not drop 2 voicings, they are sus 2 or maybe add 9 if playing the full chord. Drop 2 normally means taking the second highest note and dropping it to the bottom of the voicing.
CMaj add2 is C+D+ *E* +G ...then drop the *E* to the bottom??? *E* is the second highest note... But glad you relearned what Drop 2 is... These are clearly drop 2 chords...
What’s funny about the drop two is I also see it as a #5 depending on the mood!!! When he stretch the A# chord it became a #5 depending on the context!!!
Yessir that #5 is a game changer!!! For most of these drop two chords, he’s generally just added the 9th and dropping the 3rd scale degree… but that #5 sneaks up in a few of his passing chords!!!! 🔥🔥🔥
I remember listening to Rodney East & Jason Tyson on youtube about 8 years ago, I kept seeing comments that Bruce Hornsby was a influence. I started studying his music and I became a big fan (I've been to two concerts). Bruce Hornsby has inspired alot of gospel musicians. I went to a workshop back in September, I got a chance to meet Joseph Pryor (Very cool guy) he said he studied Bruce Hornsby and a lot of Baltimore's Keyboard Players studied him too.
Yooo he is definitely that dude!!! Signature sound and chord placement!!! And yessir we’re still tweaking things to get it to our liking - stay tuned for more info!!!
Congratulations KC. They say never meet your heroes BUT i’m so happy to say this is not the case with Mr. East!! Amazing and humble musician with a heart to serve! God bless you both. This has been a blessing to me! Not sure how you can top this KC 😂😂. Blessings 🙏🏾🙏🏾
Yeah man, I’ve heard the same thing!!! It’s like they are NEVER the person you see in social media !!! But I can’t make this up - He’s probably even MORE humble in person; kinda eerie honestly! Definitely one of the real ones!!!
Wow man! Thanks so much!!! It was tough breaking it down in real time, as I didn’t want to interrupt his flow!!! But it seemed to have worked out well… Much love and thanks so much! ☀️💚🔥
This was very helpful my brother and I believe many aspiring musicians will benefit from your explanation. All the best with your music journey Cheers 🥂
