It always drives me a little crazy when people use the pinky for the power chord and not the ring finger. You use the ring finger for the 5th so the pinky is open to do other things.
Awesome! I'm wondering though, respectfully, are there benefits to doing bar chords with the pinky vs ring finger? I learned to use the ring finger, but have been noticing more and more that a lot of people use the pinky... I think even mustaine does.
It's just personal preference! If you feel comfortable doing the chords with the ring finger then don't change that! I know Kerry King still does power chords with his ring finger as well. I do the pinky because it feels better and more comfortable to play to me, so that's why I do it. So yeah, do what feels better for you!
Not really D: For me alternate picking kinda came just with time, it was never something that I focused on too much after I got the speed (in fact, at least for lead playing, I don't consider myself a very good alternate picker). I would recommend you to go watch some of Bernth's videos on the topic! He's more focused on lead playing rather than rhythm, but his exercises will still apply to getting better regardless.
