So stoked for you, my dude. It's been really amazing to watch you come into your own over the years and blossom from a shy "fiver pro" to a unique voice in the world of bass guitar. Your passion is infectious, your technique is amazing, and your lessons are dope. Congrats on the sig model, you've earned it!
Amazing lesson Charles! Also, have you considered doing a contest giveaway for your signature bass? Your previous contests were a tremendous amount of fun and I’m sure many fans including myself would love to participate in another one.
I officially feel better about my technique. I've never been super serious about my playing, but I've always kept my movements efficient and I've been implementing the OHSP technique as you call it for years.
Thank you so much Charles for your awesome lessons and it really helps us to learn musically,am pretty much sure everyone is learning so much from you through this channel and am learning too and no doubt you are the new era of bass world.. Big fan 🤘🏻 Regards
i donated my electric bass to a school many years ago as I was focusing on upright bass, but watching this makes me want to work on electric bass again .... even though I'm mostly playing folk / classical these days, have to say a bit of slap looks like so much fun ... wish I had something like this when was self learning bass in the 90s :)
these exercises show how thoughtful you are in composing teaching material. The rhythm looks so much easier than it is to play. The first 3 beats of the first exercise the slaps go from the "and a" of beat 1, to the "and" of beat 2, then to the "a" of beat 3. I've been playing Flea slap lines for 10+ years thinking I'm a master when I'm really just a beginner.... keep them coming Charles, ahem, I mean BassCamp!
Fantastic. Can you give the best advice about getting a great slap Bass tone. Feks going from finger style to slap . Amplifiers and pedals. What you need. You don’t enjoy playing slap if the sounds suck. Thanks. So what is important to have.
Any advice for the second exercise with the left hand slaps? Playing with an anchored index finger always has me ringing out a note rather than just the muted percussive slap sound we are aiming for. Comes out more like a slap hammer on
Really nice one. Exactly on time, as I started to look for a new routine for my post-beginner phase of learning. One tiny suggestion for the production: the background music, in the sections where you talk, quickly creates an annoying white noise effect. This content is good on its own; you don't need to sprinkle it with unnecessary bits.
Amazing Lessons Charles.. I’m wondering if there are many many more students of the bass guitar that would access this channel if your name was included in your channel name 🤔🤔🤔 I’m willing to bet that many (even fans of yours) pass over this channel unaware that it’s yours. (I could be wrong 😉) But thank you.. thank you.. thank you! (from The Big Island.. Kailua-Kona, Hawaii 🌴)
As a lifelong bassist and Victor Wooten fan, I'm super stoked to have Charles Berthoud burst into my life. My only issue is that I have to wait 2 more weeks to recover from a sprained wrist -- can't wait to try out some of these techniques.
Hello Charles Berthoud, I would like to know how fast you play it at the beginning 100-110-120 bpm ? That way I'll be able to have a target lol, I imagine the others are at the same speed ?
Do you have a video on your tab nomenclature? I have no clue what the 'P' 'T' or 'L' mean in the tabs and it seems like there's a lot of different styles of bass tabs out there
I think ‘T’ is thumb so you’d slap with the thumb ‘P’ pluck with your finger And I’m taking a hard guess ‘L’ is for left hand when you’re using your fretboard hand to slap the bass rather then your plucking hand
Nice tutorial Charles! How are you muting E and A strings when playing on D and G? These strings usually start to ring by itself and the sound is muffled. Thanks
Thank you so much charles! I`ve been improving a lot thanks to you! This videos are great but if i had to give you a constructive criticism is that if you don`t learn the tabs in memory it`s hard to follow due to the fast change, but other than that they are great ❤
Your "slow tempo" is wayyyyyy to fast for beginners that try to do this. Also: i have watched a truckload of slap bass lesson videos on RU-vid from various teachers, but i have this persistent feeling that all of you do not teach the inside details of what kind of routine or trick you need to get a grip on to really get better or good at playing slap bass. It's all just bits and pieces. It's like someone teaches you how to drive a car but only talks about the steering wheel and the break pedal. While there is a whole package that you asked for, but you don't get. It's so frustrating and dissapointing to me.
Here's your fix: Scott's bass lessons on RU-vid. An incredible wealth of knowledge to be gained from there. TLDR: one proper technique is... turn the hand like your turning a doorknob, is how Scott explains it. Among other things, but that's an important detail no one else shares.
It's really not that deep. Just practice the slap by literally rotating your thumb into the E or A string at the neck and pop the D or G string by rotating the index finger out. Make sure you are parallel to strings. That's all there is, and that's the basics of the technique. Anything else is just adding flare with hours of practice.
@@tbarganier8823 Scott does the same thing: bits and pieces. Also quite a lot of jokes and non-bass-related nonsense which distract from something you try to comprehend. I'm not a fan.
