Boston is truly the greatest rock band in history. Tom Scholz doesn’t get enough credit for the crazy writing skills he has. The fact that when he had an idea for a guitar sound that didn’t exist, he would create his own sound machines to make the sound. And Brad Delp on vocals is just the cherry on top. His harmonies are unbeatable
This is awesome, not a single bad song on that first Boston album. Thank you for showing how to play this, sounds epic. Definitely going to learn this.
Tom scholz has been my greatest guitar hero for as long as I can remember. People just don’t realize what all he has done for the music world, and what all he has invented. He’s a genius no doubt
Thanks so much man! They are intricate pieces. Lots of little nuances in the parts and playing. Tom really put these pieces together masterfully and with such care.
Thank you for driving me to the Boston's discovery. First time I listen this piece in my entire life and i feel that something great was missing until now to my experience. 😮🙇♂
Love Bostons first album I'm 59 years old loved it when it came out still gives me the groove and makes me pick up my guitar and play since I was in 8th grade
Oh yes! What a great piece if music! I've been a Boston lover since '76! Actually wearing a Boston tee now that I got around 2008 when I had the privlege of seeing them on the big terrace at the Biltmore Estate concert series... "Life, Love, & Hope" tour... spectacular sunset view to west while they played all their greatest! I once thought I was ready to tackle this epic intro & song on drums... but we never got there. YOU ROCK!
You're welcome! Man have you watched the Boston concert at Giants stadium on RU-vid? Check this out dude. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7SSrZjSoRj4.htmlsi=1gpy8jo93Yx9EgLI
Well, looks like Barry was guitarin on that one live. Didn't look like he was working too hard to pull it off either. Bleeve he deserves a tad more credit Tommy Boy.
BIG Boston fan from the beginning, that first album came out and blew everything away, the whole album rocks from beginning to end, killer debut album. Thank you, great lesson, now to bust out the guitar and relearn the correct way to play it. You always come thru on your lessons. Thank you again and have a great weekend Marty 🤘
Thanks for watching and for the kind words! True words. Boston were head of the class in tone, performance and song writing. Such a wonderful album. I've been watching old live footage from the late 70's. They were awesome live as well!
Nice lesson again Marty! I've always wanted the TS Rockman and Sustainer for my set up since he put those out back in the day. I still dont have one😂😂. Lots of bands used these for secret weapons.
I detuned the low E string to a drop D to play that intro. Saved my hands big time to be able to play this. To me, I'd rather do that than have it sound "right" cause I gotta carry on with life after I play this song.
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker Correct. He wrote the intro on a Hammond organ and I believe was the first piece he ever wrote. So yes this piece is far easier on a keyboard.
Awesome... I think it was Barry who played the bar chord intro and the beginning lead intro... At least on stage he did. Check out the you tube live at giants stadium.
Great lesson and phenomenal song. If you were inclined, I’ve always been interested in getting Something About You nailed down - I consider it to be one of the most underrated Boston songs along with the more recent I Think I Like It ….. big Boston fan too
Your tone is impeccable. It's tough to get the right Boston sound for this. Amplitube 5 also does a good job with their Rockman clone as well. Great video and thanks for sharing.
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker You should hang on to it all Marty. Have you seen what deluxe memory mans from the 90's are going for on reverb? We could have enough $ for retirement, selling off our old vintage gear some day lol
Marty… excellent…forgot to talk about your sound… know you got the Tom Shultz boxes… I’ve only got the little one.. was great in motel rms to learn songs
I learned to play guitar with a Checkmate dime store acoustic guitar and Boston's first album, sitting in the floor next to the record player. Talk about a steep learning curve! Most of those searing lead guitar parts were Barry Goudreau. Thanks for the trip down memory lane... oh and as always, you nailed the tone! I love that Les Paul, too! Rock on, Brother!
Barry was excellent. I have been watching the Giants stadium concert on RU-vid a lot lately. He really was a great guitarist and worked so well with Tom. What a sound.
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker I really hate the way it was all left. maybe Tom and Barry could work it out someday.... Barry's band The Engine Room sounds more like Boston than the modern version of Boston....
@@davidcraft4919 yeh too bad it all went down so bad. But I guess the tipping point was Barry releasing an album that sounded like Boston so the record company and Tom got really protective. But you can't blame Barry for doing something and making a great record. Rather than wait for the Boston gears to turn again. 🤷
Love this ❤️ shaft I really like about you is you don’t show us how to always learn the more popular songs that they always play on the radio. Do they not get the fact that so many bands had killer other tunes … Thanks so much !! Keep rocking 😃😁
Just got back into playing and this song is a freaki'n workout! Holy crap those power chords are a killer then all the bending in hard to reach upper register......definitely gonna take some time to rebuild the hand strength. Subbed! I hope you teach a whole lot of Boston. What are you using to get your sound on this? I'm trying to get an X100 but they are spendy man. Thanks for posting this!!! Sounds awesome!
Dude! I am learning about 25% of all these really cool tunes you teach! That is until the next really cool lesson you do! Having so much fun but not learning any song start to finish! Is that a bad thing? 😂 Also, how do you dial in this Boston tone?
Good morning Marty your definitely hitting them notes perfectly I actually got that song on a 3 inch cd that has both of them n it thanks are you using your fractal
Hey man! Thanks so much. I'm actually using Rockmans! I have a rockman sustainor running into a rockman stereo chorus running into a rockman stereo echo. That's it! Recording direct into pro tools. I figured I might as well use the Tom Scholz built stuff to make the video and get the sound! 😎🎵🎵🎵🤟🏻
Hi Marty, Where did you get the Rock man setup and how the hell do you operate it, just looks like a bunch of buttons and controls. Then better yet a Hughes and Kettner. We're in the money , the sky is Sunny, we've got a lot of what it takes to get along. Anyway I'm happy you're doing well my friend and great video of a great song from the past. Peace 🕊️.
Hah man, I slowly piece that rockman stuff together over the last few years. Found a sustainor on eBay. Then a while went by and someone traded me the echo for a parts caster I built. I stumbled onto that chorus at a used shop about 6 months ago. It's been a process getting it all together. But a fun one!
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker I'm sure people are coming to you with all kinds of guitars and equipment. I mean really, how can you play all that stuff. I have three guitars, just bought a Yamaha Revstar element on Sunday and two amps and I mostly play my strat and my 25 mustang and that's all I have time for and I'm retired. You have alot of killer guitars and amps but really, lol. I can just dream of nice guitars in my sleep 😴. Keep Rocking Marty.
@@douglaschristine8387 I'm 53 and have been buying guitars since I was 18 and a freshman at college. I toured with a band every weekend in the early 2000s for over 7 years and worked a full time job m-f. Still work full time. I have Sacrificed a lot. Mostly relationships and family. Kinda sad really. Lol. Also I Never really sell much. No one gives me anything to be honest. I wish they did. Other than one guitar my friend Phil Orisek made me and dealer sent me a $150 strat I gave away. 🤷 it's kinda nuts to have this much stuff. But it makes me happy so I started a RU-vid channel. Haha. Thanks for supporting the channel man. It's just a fun outlet for me and I enjoy all the interactions. 😎🎵🎸☮️
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker yeah that's what you do and if I had started playing when I was younger I would probably have alot myself because I worked my whole life to even as a 10 year old paperboy, lol. I've had my share of heartache too and that's why I have a dog and play guitar because it makes me feel good. Love your channel and I didn't mean to rub you the wrong way. I was just kidding with you, maybe I'm jealous. That's why texting can be bad because it's just words with no emotion and can be taken wrong. Sorry my friend Marty. Peace 🕊️.
@@douglaschristine8387 I was t upset man! Not at all. Just talking with ya. Text has no inflection. The last thing I ever want on here is for people to think I feel like I'm superior or blah blah. We're all just dudes playing guitar and getting through life.
I was going to suggest a way to get close to the Boston tone, but it looks like you're there......can you give us a clue as to your signal chain? My suggestion was the Fulltone Secret Freq.
It's posted in Marty's description above. I'm using the TH-U Rockguy plugin which nails the high compression/chorus Boston tone. IK Multimedia Amplitube also has a Boston which is included with the Joe Satriani package.
Thanks man! Im actually running all Rockman stuff. Rockman Sustainor--->Rockman Stereo Chorus--->Rockman Stereo Echo. Direct into my console and pro tools. I figured I might as well use Tom Scholz gear for the sound. 😎🤟🏻🎵
@@Ranch5150SkinWalkerBoston is right next to Van Halen for me. New levels of music (and gear) were established from both of these bands at nearly the same time. I'm here to pickup the parts I don't have figured out quite right, and I will listen intently to every single note played through that Rockman gear! I used to have a Rockman Distortion Generator, and now I miss it so much. I wish that Dunlop would restart and continue producing the Scholz R&D Rockman rack lineup. If not Dunlop, then somebody like Eventide, ART, or dbx should buy the rights and do it up again.
@@shawnhedrick3570 I with they would reissue the Rockmans too, that would be a lot of fun. There's something cool and magical about picking up these old pieces. They still sound great! Fun to find on the used market if you ca. get a "deal". I hope the video helps you out man! 😎🤟🏻☮️
