I played the Izumo for 25 battles. Battles survived: 4. Average damage: 68k (less than any of my tier 8 BBs). Then I free XP'd the Yamato and never looked back. With the Yamato, 113k average damage and a 50% survival rate.
Yeah, IK this is an old video but i just got Izumo... i dont see the great things about it mentioned. XD. Im averaging 80k but its still lower than my normal average at the tier of bare minimum 100k and average of 120k like yourself. IDK what im doing wrong lol.
@@AllAhabNoMoby I dont understand. As far as i can see u need buy it and play this ship first. I had xp but it said u need buy previous ship in tech tree before yamato
@@borghome If you have enough Free P (or ship XP in the Amagi + Free XP) you can first research the Izumo, all its hulls and then the Yamato. No need to buy and play the Izumo. It's gonna cost you a shitload of Free XP (around a quarter million I guess) but you can do it.
Even after the buffs, there's one huge problem with Izumo: it's so *ugly.* And not in a brutal, dangerously-looking kind of ugly like (say) Imperator Nikolai and Oktyabrskaya Revolutsiya. I'd re-buy Izumo and play it again if Wargaming would fix the model so it looks like an actual Japanese ship instead of looking fake as hell like it does now. The other paper ships *look* real in World of Warships, so why doesn't Izumo. Rearrange the 5" secondaries to a layout like on Yamato, fill the currently empty superstructure with gun directors and searchlights like on Yamato, and most of all, make those damned shipping container boxes on the sides of the hull look like the streamlined boat docks on Yamato. Flipping around the third turret so it points forward like on Nelson would be amazing, but I still wouldn't re-buy Izumo unless it stops being so horrible to look at. I already have Yamato and Musashi which are both better *and* beautiful, after all.
The thing to understand about the Izumo is that it was never actually built. As far as I know, this ship was never anything more than a series of drawings. I don't even think they built a scale model of it. The Izumo was an early draft of a design for a new class of battleship. This design would later be refined, altered, and would ultimately become the Yamato class. So if you think there are elements of the Izumo's design that are either impractical or just plain ugly, well, turns out the Japanese Navy agreed with you, which is why they decided to build something else (namely the Yamato and the Musashi) instead.
@@Rhojin83 That is his point exactly ;) : it's a paper ship anyway, so let your imagination go wild, perhaps make it look like a hypothetical pre-Yamato or whatever. Don't stick to the original drawings so much, as this makes the ship look just plainly ridiculous.
@@Abensberg It's not the layout that's ugly, it's the implementation of it. The problem with Izumo's appearance is that Wargaming just copied the design sketch exactly and didn't add in any of the stuff that would've been there had the ship actually been built. All of the other paper ships look sufficiently "real", but Izumo really doesn't.
I recently got my izumo and was told by most players to free xp past it however, I like to grind through the ships without using any free xp and seeing this tutorial has definitely made me feel more comfortable using her and so far I'm enjoying her :) keep up the great content
Great video. I have started back up may grind on the IJN BBs. Over the years I kept on hearing that you should Free XP your way through her. Now it looks like one to have fun with. Save the Free XP for something else. Thank you for going through some of the older ships and giving new reflections on them.
Very good analysis, especially concerning how to angle and why, what to do and what not to do and when to do what. I like your how-to-series. *thumps up* Many players complain in the chat "hey, you are a battleship, why are you staying so far behind, why don't you tank for the team at the frontline" and so on, they start pinging your position on the minimap 4-5 times to show their dissatisfaction with your play style, here is the answer for them.
Good to hear, because I have a thing for weird battleships. I first played the game back in the Beta days, when there only were American and Japanese tech trees, but I never played the game properly. Only ever bumbled around for a few matches, then uninstalled it, then tried it again a year later, uninstalled it again after 5 or 6 battles and so on. My highest tier ship is the Fuso and the reason why I started grinding Japanese BBs back in the day was not the Yamato, but I wanted the Izumo, even though everybody said it is garbage. I didn't care, because I just find the thing cool. So now that I'm playing the game seriously for the first time in 5+ years and am getting the hang of it, my favorite ship, which is only 3 tiers away now, being buffed like that, is very good news indeed.
Well, I did my grind on her when she was supposedly "shitty" doing exactly what you are doing now, and I had a 66% win rate with 92k average damage. I always considered her the best non-premium tier 9 BB.
This is an excellent video series, iChase. Hopefully many players can find the joy in some of these tough ships with your help. I'm just the crazy guy who actually liked the Izumo many moons ago (pre-buff). If we fundamentally call this "How To" series "How to Play tough/misunderstood ships", I can think of quite a few other candidates I'm sure will be hotly requested: How to: Omaha How to: Ibuki How to: Nurnberg How to: Emerald How to: Tashkent How to: Bismarck How to: New York There are certainly many other potential candidate ships for this list. I'm just thinking of any immediate ships that come to mind that I consistently see played poorly or incorrectly (against their strengths).
Chase's change of heart toward the Izumo reminds me of myself and the Furutaka. I found her to be an outrageously fustrating ship to play before she recieved her C Hull and when I was still fairly new to the game but now I see her as one of the strongest tier 5 cruisers even after all the newer additions since.
Furutaka? They must have really buffed it then. When I played that ship it was like sitting in a tub of frozen molasses watching something petrify as it tried to turn it's turrets or rudder only to see your target already miles away from where you were pointing and your arse already sitting on the sea floor turning into fossils.
I love Furutaka: great guns for its tier and good torps too for dev striking unsuspecting ships. I don't know how but I scored my highest XP of 3500 in the ship ;D
just got the izumo today. after two battles I have to say one thing: THIS THING'S A CHAMP AND I LOVE IT!!! even as a stock ship I managed to get my first kraken with it and it tanks like no one's business
Meh if the Nagato wasn't in game the Izumo would be my least favorite Japanese BB. I'd still rather take the Amagi in tier 10 than the Izumo at the moment. I also find that unlike what happens to RU-vidrs (really sus), everyone I face doesn't sail broadside. They actually angle their ship how they are supposed to. I'll probably play a premium and just free exp through it...but I'll give it some more time and chances before that.
I do not miss the Izumo! Now that i unlocked the yamato i do not even bother looking back at other japanese BBs except Amagi perhaps. Yamato is just so outstanding and fun to play!
Thanks for the video. Great analysis. I've always said that the Izumo wasnt a garbage ship even pre buff. I was averaging 87k DMG before and had a great win rate.
Tbh, i actually like this ship even before the buff. It got that yamato-ish feeling where u can basically citadel any ship u can see regardless distance. It's kinda like montana where people tend to underestimate then u blapped it out of existence for that act.
Thanks for this review. I had Izumo researched to been working on skipping it through Premium XP grinding; painful... I'll buy Izumo now with your suggested play style in mind :)
well you basically play her like a stealthy BB and wait for midrange broadsides 10-15kms especially on cruisers, where you can land some citadels. Other than that you should abuse islandcover to a) come closer in cover to be able to place AP hits and b) use cover to get free damage in. Afaik the Hipper has the same "implemented" IFHE so your HE alpha is quite consistant and your fire starting abilities are quite ok aswell. Back when I lvld the german cruisers the HE was quite useless, so the Hipper really relied on closing in to get juicy AP broadsides, nowadays I think you might get away with slow kiting away from enemies + good angling + HE spam. The tactics for that would be, you try to position yourself at roughly 15 kms, turn your stern to the enemy, drive away from em at 1/4 speed and spam HE unless you can find some good broadsides for AP. For the AP always remember you fire your AP at the super structure, since often times your AP will shatter even on broadside belts of BBs, so you rather try to hit the superstructure with it. Under 10 kms you can get away with ap on battleship belts, but german AP as good of a damage source it is, does not like even slightest of angling. for your AP the stern and the bow sections on BBs are usually less armored and german AP tends to deal more damage there when you manage to hit them on broadsides at ranges over 10-12 kms, but it is kinda hard, so rather focus the superstructure on BB broadsides on higher ranges with AP, since you tend to get more consistant volleys from them. Against cruisers you can hurt them badly even on higher ranges with AP, given they show you broadside. So what I did back then, when facing a cruiser I kinda "hunted" them. If I saw a good cruiser target, I tried to get close while stealthed and waited with AP loaded until they were showing broadsides. You really have an awesome armor vs cruisers so keep that in mind, because you can make use of it, showing kind of a lot broadside, while having all of your weapons on target, while your enemy needs to maintain angle against you, since your AP hurts. So when you catch a cruiser offguard and land one good initial volley on them, they usually either angle away, in which case you can pursuit them, while switching to HE and trying to burn them, since they wont usually show you broadside anymore, or if they decide to angle into you and charge, you can either try to charge him back, having all of your guns on target and wait until he gets into torpedo range, or slow down and have him coming to you into your torpedo range. Always try to force the enemy into your terms of the fight. Shortly beffore the enemy gets into your torpedo range, you should load ap and conserve the volley for the occasion he turns broadside to you and focus on landing your torps if he decides to keep angled. If he shows broadside under 10 kms, your AP can usually wreck any cruiser pretty brutally. Just keep in mind to make always use of angling, even if it is a slight angle it is always better than a flat broadside and always try to have an eye on the map to not overextend or get into unfavourable situations, where you can be crossfired. Always have an escape plan and or friendlies nearby or an opportunity where u can disengage into stealth if need be.
oh sure mate^^ what I forgot to mention is the awesome hydro on german cruisers. I noticed people hesitate to use it, if not for hunting a DD. Sometimes if you are suspecting torpedoes coming your way or if you get spotted when you should not be, it can be very helpful, not only for yourself, but also for your teammates to have your hydro spotting torpedoes in a 6 km circle around you! Hope I could help :O
what I felt about izumo before buff, just by shooting her without riding, that Izumo is immune to AP(not Yamato) when It is properly angled merely 60~70 degrees angle often chews competitors AP
How to play the Izumo. 1. Miss every salvo. 2. Get constantly screwed by RNG. 3. Get spotted from 1000 km away. 4. Get set on fire every 10 seconds. 5. Die.
I played the Izumo when it was complete BS and was grinding to the Yamato. Lucky to those who are playing her now. She was a POS of mythical proportions back in the day.
I actually didn't mind this ship so much when I had to grind through it, the only negative I really had was that 3rd turret , I would of much rather it be facing towards the bow of the ship. Luckily the Nelson is out so I can play that instead. Oddly enough I have a terrible time with the Iowa, and I was so excited to get her too. So when it came down to getting Missouri or Musashi, I chose Musashi. Despite all the people saying I should get the Missouri cause it prints credits, I just had a hard time with Iowa and I wasn't ready to commit to 2 ships I didn't care much for. I haven't regretted it so far, but just like me liking the Izumo, everyone has their own tastes in ships.
Yesterday I played this shi(t)p and I couldnt even deal more than 5k dmg on a full broadside conqueror sitting still at 12 km because of horrible dispersion. Really, this ship tries to be as annoying as possible in every aspect...
ikr, the biggest problem on the izumo for both me and my cousin is the shitty dispersion;; i just feel it unconfortable right after firing... whilst the US BBs and Yamato were like “--”, the Izumo is more similar to "口" XD
Izumo aka A-140/J2 www.deviantart.com/tzoli/art/Yamato-Preliminary-Design-A-140J2-748771917 needs to be replaced by A-140/D www.deviantart.com/tzoli/art/Yamato-Preliminary-Design-A-140D-746763878 A-140/D is basically Izumo with a Nelson Turret Layout. Other than that she's perfect. Second Highest Point Blank penetration in the game at 959mm (only recently beaten by Republique at 971mm). And best non-German Turtleback armour of T9. Plus Izumo has the fastest Shells above 305mm guns at whopping 870m/s. FYI Roma with her glorious Italian railguns only go at 850m/s.
Hey Chase, I need your advice. I'm currently on tier 5-6, getting my first t7 very soon and I'm thinking about getting a premium... As I'm best in battleships I'm thinking about Warspite or Scharnhorst. Which would you recommend?
I had the most success in her playing her as a mini Montana. Keep moving and abuse stealth. Your DPM is way too low to island hug. Always shoot AP at broadside cruisers and BBs only switching to HE against angled ones. Having the range mod gives her a lot of flexibility and reach. You rely on your broadside Alpha strikes instead of steady DPM. Disengage when necessary.
For me Buffalo is my mini-Des-Moines that actually does the DD hunting part better due to improved stealth. It's just so tiny! And it still has that AP...
@@ichasegaming Get some game play pre buff that way you can hopefully show the difference. Yeah extremely tough.. maybe get some stream watchers or clan people in a training room to create similar scenario's.
play the buffalo like you want to marry every island in sight and try to use the right ammo for the situation also if there is a chance to ambush people hold fire and then blap their broadside with twelve freedom ap shells
I actually think Izumo is the most mean-looking BB in the game atm. Where many scorn her weird super structure I think that monolithic Pagoda tower is the absolute bomb.
Is easy to play izumo, you just go to arsenal and buy the Musashi or free xp skip it. But if you are playing it, it's a struggle until you get Hull C, 26 seconds rudder is painful, but the guns turned out to be accurate. The satisfaction comes when you get the Yamato after playing this ship.
Sorry, this in no way reflects my experience with this ship (which I am still grinding through). I'm sure a super unicum player like yourself can make any ship look good.
Yeah, so I free xped straight through this ship after like 4 battles or something. Haven’t regretted it at all. If Chase likes it then..........we need to get him to the doctor!!!
Have to say that I've not had a good experience with the Nagato. It either hit's and pens the citadel 4 times and one shot's them at 20km, or, more likely, you can be less than 3km away and half your shells end up in the water somehow. It's dispersion is cancerous. It's fun when it works, but it rarely does.
The Izumo is MUCH better after it’s buffs. But, it is still one of those ships that will punish you into the dirt if you make the slightest mistake. (5/5 for difficulty.) It’s still a floating citadel. Your surroundings are key. It’s a great bow tanker, but if in a position where you can occasionally use the 3rd turret is good, but not mandatory. The Iowa is still a much better ship. However, the new Izumo can lay down massive damage if used properly. The Izumo is a sniper, and nothing else. You cannot let anything get close to you. If something gets close, you need to be the biggest pussy you can possibly be. Run. Run away, and angle your ship to rely on the deck armor.
Chase, just a quick note: when quoting personal stats for a ship, don't do it with only 12 battles. The stats are simply not representative or useful with such a small sample size. For instance, in my Des Moines, I have a 71% WR right now, which makes me sound like a fantastic DM specialist who should be feared. In reality, I've only played 31 battles in Des Moines and while I'm not bad with DM, I'm certainly not some brilliant player as the WR would suggest. In all likelihood, I've simply gotten rather lucky. That said, it is interesting to see the Izumo's buffs. I've never actually played her, having completely FXPed past her for Yamato (I know, I'm a bad man), but that armour is rather interesting.
@@ichasegaming Sorry Chase, I don't mean to be a prat, but that's more or less irrelevant since you only quoted stats for those 12 battles. In effect, the stats don't work as well as a representation when you have such a small sample size since other factors (especially good play, a good run of teams, outright luck, good maps for Izumo, etc.) become magnified in their effect. I don't mean to say that you don't know Izumo or the game in general. God knows you're a better player than I'll ever be. I'm just talking about using those 12 recent battles as an indicator of Izumo's current performance. Sample sizes for statistics is just something to keep in mind for the future.
i always loved Izumo, very good ship but players dont know how to use it, so the bad reputation. I now have the Iowa and i stay with izumo all the way.
Can’t I do the same kiting in a Richelieu and get 90+K damage and survive? I’m pained to hear my Alsace was nerfed for a fatter one at T10. Honestly a French version of Montana with Republics guns would’ve been better.
So, I just picked up Amagi. I've never seen a video break down a ship's strengths and weaknesses like this. I looked through your catalog, and I don't see any Amagi videos. I went back three years, and I did scroll pretty fast, so maybe I missed it/them... But I'd really appreciate a look at Amagi in this format.
Amagi is a battlecruiser, so treat her like a cruiser. Like Kongo, she cannot take damage well, so you focus on firing while not being the focus of enemy fire. Play in support of a more tanky BB, advance slightly behind a main fleet, or like this video, kite away.
Could I recommend you the next ship for this series? The Alabama/Massachusetts. As a constant player for American BBs, the Alabama is my favorite. At tier 8, with a 95 AA rating (with captain skills and upgrades, without them, it's still an excellent AA platform), I actually beg to be in a match with a CV, aand hope he's dumb enough to try and attack me.
People keep saying this ship is terrible , it was not that bad, the problem usually with the Captains not the ship it self, I found Izumo is great, even greater after buffed.
@@hardworkingslacker7233 I disagree with you, she maybe weird but once you know how to use her, she's pretty strong, even can withstand Yamato hits ( not saying she's immune from it but she can survive if you play her well)
Can you do the exact same video but in a Tier X match-up? I played enough Izumo to know it doesn't uptier very well and is highly punished for running away from HE spam and Monty/Yammy AP
My problem with Izumo was the unbelievable inconsistency of the guns, tbh. This game you were having some really nice RNG, has that been adressed in the buffs as well?
The buffs were necessary and are nice, but ... the ship still takes a ton of damage. Yes, your citadel is well protected when angled, but you still take 8-12k damage from every volley that is correctly aimed at you. Talking about regular pens, not hits to the citadel. Those delete you. HE spam melts you very quickly, not French BB level of quick, but still very quickly. Because of this you can't really push anything, which for me makes this BB an annoying one to play. To be able to have a serious impact on the game, which translates into those nice win rates, you need to do a shit load of damage from afar.
Was saving my Free-Xp for the J-Bart but since it's not a free xp ship I'll use my free xp to pass this ship and get the Yamato and save myself the headache of the jpn BB's.
Actually, you shouldn't skip Izumo. Because the gameplay between Amagi and Yamato is very different. That's why WG added Izumo to prepare players on how to be a decent BB player before reaching Yamato.
Ten thousand XP? I'm around one thousand with this ship and as a two months old player I don't understand how's that possible, and I do hit citadels every match. Also, I have premium acc. :( Can someone tell me how? Thanks.
Well, i just tried it again....still crap... average dmg per AP 1440 only.... No juicy citadels, no idiot enemys giving me broadside... In a game where the enemy knows what they are doing Izumo cant carry the team like other BBs, it will burn to death.
There is literally no reason that this ship should be performing any less than an Iowa or Missouri now. It has roughly the same concealment. Much better armor. More accurate guns. Maybe the problem isn't the ship.
@@RedShirtGuy96 You're right im a crappy BB player, but this ship,...last game i was with an Izumo fleeing from a Musashi, shot 3 salvos against him, O damage even when i aimed for the superstructure the dispersion didnt help, and the musashi citadel my ass with their Yamato guns... i Know that i couldnt do the same damage, but 0 damage, come on, 410mm at close range dont do any damage to a ship????? I had to aim to another ship at range to do a little more damage before eventualy get raped... Again, in other BBs like the Missouri, North Carolina, Bismark, Amagi never felt so powerless...
I really am sorry, but that side armour bullshit does not help, everytime I've exposed a little of hher side, i get penned or citadelled. I even got citadelled by the Slava hheavy cruiser
I don't understand why the community needs a guide on how to play Izumo. It's very easy to play Izumo. You select the ship, and you then you look at the top right on the screenshot. Do you have enough free XP to bypass Izumo and buy Yamato? if yes, then good. If no, then you select another ship, you farm that sweet free XP, and then you buy the Yamato. This is hands down the easiest way to play Izumo. :D
How to *REALLY* play Izumo: 1. Get set on fire. 2. Get set on more fire. 3. Repeat until you collect 42 fires. Yes Izumo is special, it can have 42 fires at the same time, unlike other inferior ships. 4. Sink and question about your life. 5. ???
Just gets better all the time for Izumo doesn't it? Damn I'm feeling the pressure now. Amagi is giving me hell and now I have this stinking pile of pooh to look forward to.
@@gothamgoon4237Izumo is a good ship for brawling if you angle her right, I certainly had much more fun with her than with Amagi. The problem are Izumo's guns, they are so much different from yamato that you literally have to relearn how to aim But other than that she is very good
