EPISODE 11 features my review & tutorial of the game LA ISLA (2014) by the great Stefan Feld. Send your researchers to a mysterious island to capture and study mysterious animals thought to be extinct! This game is a much lighter Feld option, which is still great for all types of gamers while offering a perfect opportunity to teach new gamers about some interesting mechanisms, such as multi-use cards, area enclosure, action programming, and market speculation. It also has your standard set collection and resource management mechanics as well. It has a beautiful table presence, and I believe it is definitely a game worth checking out!

Love your content. Bought La Isla a long time ago very cheaply on sale, but haven't gotten around to table it yet. After this, I most definitely will need to rectify that. Thanks!

Thanks for the kind words! La Isla really is a cool game. What you said happens to me all the time; I get a game and it sits unplayed, and sometimes I just need a little video or some motivation to finally get it to the table. I hope you enjoy it!

Great video! Feld is my favorite designer. Trajan is probably my favorite, but I need to play Marrakesh more to give it a final ranking

Thanks for the comment! I have not had a chance to play Marrakesh yet, but it is very high on my "want to play" list. Feld is my wife's favorite designer too. He's definitely in my top 3, but it kinda depends on my mood. Still, I've never been disappointed by a Feld game! Trajan is currently my number 2 favorite game of all time. So good!!

Another mechanism worth noting is that it’s a “secret shares” game, which is unusual for Feld. Due to that, you need to collude with opponents while also keeping a keen eye on what animals others are pushing. I’m not a huge Feld fan but I think La Isla is definitely undervalued. Per your call for recommendations: Carpe Diem had a poor reception due to the art, and I think that made some give it a miss. That’s unfortunate because it is a rock-solid, light Euro - different from La Isla but deserving of more attention.

Yes! Great comment. It definitely has that with those different animal tracks. That's yet another one of the many subtleties I love about La Isla. It's a sneaky good game... one of those that seems almost too light on the surface but then you start to see that hidden depth as you play more. I love games like that. Carpe Diem is very high on my want-to-play list. I have not had a chance to try it yet, but I will try to get to it soon now that I've received another recommendation for it! Oh nice!!!! That’s exciting! Merlin is amazing and so underrated in my opinion. La Isla is way lighter but it’s still really cool. I hope you enjoy it!

This game is great! The multi-use cards are so much fun to puzzle out! I am however, really bad at it! Missy & Grayson always run circles around me, I think my plans are solid and it rarely works out!

@@undiscovered_games $20 later and eBay worked its magic - with a sealed copy no less! ;) I was shocked how available this is compared to, say, Bruges.

Right??? That’s awesome! Yeah this is like the little brother to Bruges with those multi use cards. It’s a much different game though and I do love Bruges too, but considering the cost difference, La Isla is a steal!!
