Another important element of his playing is upstrokes. He used upstrokes where most use downstrokes or alternating strokes, on repeated double-stops for example. He was very fast and strong with the upstrokes. I can't do it. It takes training I have yet to achieve, but it gave a subtle but unmistakable signature to his sound.
Not important at all. The downstroke or upstroke is just an option to the intended goal. Master the basic fundamentals of his licks and it doesnt matter how you get the notes. The fact you admit, "you can't do it" explains why you think upstrokes will make any difference. I've played his licks even with legato, hammer ons and pull offs and NO ONE has ever said, "it sounds like SRV, but he didnt use legato or hammer ons". You do have to use a heavy hand and attack the notes though, I give you that.
To watch what you do with the tab on screen just makes it all gel for me.....it's all brilliant and to the point .....it is all so watchable.......love it.....i feel i have struck gold..
I have a theory, and it seemed to have worked. It sounds like you use it too...although I could be wrong SRV used a few amps, some driven, and some clean. I cant do that, but I had a brain wave that a delay would be created between his amps which contributed to that sound, albeit very fast I use a tube screamer through a Bassbreaker 15, as you mention at the start of this excellent video, but add a single, very fast delay much lower than the original signal. Its worth a try. I never take that fast delay off no matter what I do. I love it! Its just a £25 Behringer Delay/rev
...loved the lesson...you sound right on...talking less about theory would be prudent with a close up of what you are doing while talking through the tabs as you go...and your "slow speed" section on lick 2 is not slow in the least!
Thanks for the comments, more coming. Question: When I talk, does it help to explain technique, how I'm hitting notes, etc? So, less talking about the theory etc, more talk about what I'm doing. Also, I want to have a site, and remove tab from the video, and just have the tab on the site. Does that make sense?
i suppose explaining techniquee.g. srv right here needs talking, love the jimi, b.b. licks just performed though a lot...having a site might make sense but i have no experience on this, have some subscriptions, hardly ever visit the site, just every now and then...maybe some other answers will help you better further...keep on though. best and cheers.
